The HfP chat thread – Thursday 15th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looking for a 3-4 night UK self catering stay for next weekend (two adults). Does anyone have good recommendations? Perhaps Cornwall or Cotswolds. Prefer modern/luxury as opposed to rustic, but we understand we can’t be too fussy given the current circumstances.

  • Mco says:

In regards to the daily 40th anniversary globe spins. I have won around 16k across three family accounts. Do you guys think they will post though as technically it’s only for US residents.

    • AJA says:

Well done you but as for points posting I think it depends on what address you have on your AAdvantage profiles. If you do not have a US address I think you will find that they will not post or if they do you risk them being cancelled. Please do report back if you are successful. Much as I’d like to participate non-US residents are ineligible so I decided not to bother. YMMV

  • Ste Cox says:

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this, I have just had an email from Amex saying my Plat card has been removed from Google Pay and sure enough its gone, I re added it this morning after getting the same email.

Using the card through Google Pay has been a bit hit and miss recently as well with it not working when other cards do and the physical card also works.

    • MW says:

It’s a Google glitch – happened to me last night, added the card back and it got taken off.

Phoned up Amex and they said there is a problem that should be fixed “soon” – suggested re-adding the card tomorrow.

  • Benilyn says:

To open a seperate MR account, can you just register using a different login?

    • Benilyn says:

That is for the new card that I just got

    • Travel Strong says:

Has always merged anyway for me when registering on seperate logins – i.e. still only one MR account per person. I’ve heard of it failing to link up, but not experienced it.

  • mart says:

Anyone got the link for the page for 3000/5000 MR points for the first 5 supps added to a gold/plat biz card?

  • Nigel W says:

What are HFPers experiences of doing a S75 claim with Curve? Looks like I need to do one regarding Tokyo Olympic tickets.

    • Scallder says:

I had to do one against Aegean as they had only partly refunded some flexible flights which we cancelled last year. They were very good, kept me up to date, were up front that it could take a while once submitted, but ultimately got the money back.

I had forwarded onto them all email documents right at the start of the process, but all in all was very happy with them.

    • Harry T says:

It’s not a credit card, so you can’t claim using section 75. You may be able to do a chargeback.

    • Lady London says:

Curve is not a credit card. Section 75 is a statute that only applies to UK credit cards. Curve is a debit card.

I am unsure how Curve handles chargeback.

    • Carol says:

I have done a chargeback twice with Curve. They were very helpful and kept me updated regularly, and refunded my money earlier than they had estimated.

  • BrianTRG says:

I have a IHG credit card free night to use by end Aug. I am Platinum. My partner is Spire Ambassador. Is there a work around for me to book my free night under her IHG number (and thus get the on property benefits associated with her account)? Thanks

  • Zoe says:

I have just been thinking about some of those massive queues coming back through Heathrow. Wouldn’t it be sad if some of those merchant bankers who have just been on holiday, sorry I mean essential travel to the Maldives over Easter got caught up for an hour or six.

    • Tim says:

Imagine allowing jealousy to dictate how you feel about people you don’t know and aren’t connected to. Border queues are an embarrassment and will prevent the re-boot of tourism at a time it needs it most. The eventual victims are people like you. The culprits are not some bankers you’ve made up.

      • Zoe says:

Sorry if I offended you Tim. This kind of referred back to some comments a few weeks ago when Rob said that most of his kids classmates were in the Maldives or Caribbean. When I asked if there was a good word for parents who were happy to show their kids that this was acceptable behaviour someone suggested ‘merchant bankers’. To be clear I’m not jealous of someone who acts in that way, I feel sorry for their kids who will be getting lots of mixed messages about ethics.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Ethics is an interesting concept when tories have used the situation to line their and their friends pockets.

        • Rob says:

My daughter told me tonight that she’s sitting on her own in class now because the girl who is usually next to her is isolating after three weeks in Bali over Easter ….

          • Pete M says:

Good that they’re isolating I guess!

          • kitten says:

Would have thought it was Bali that was isolating after the surge in cases in Dubai just after Christmas….
            Miaow.

        • Number9 says:

Don’t think some people are understanding rhyming slang for “ merchant bankers” .
