The HfP chat thread – Thursday 15th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi – not up to speed with Natwest Rewards as the Natwest is not my main banking account. Can I make 2 DD payments to the same person in consecutive days to count for the free rewards, providing I pay in £1,250 per month. Currently have one DD in and out of the account but could do one more DD each way in order to get the rewards? Forgetting rewards am I right in saying it costs £2 per month but we would get back £4 or £5 if using app . TIA

    • CH says:

Sounds like you’re confusing direct debits and standing orders. You get the £2 on each of two direct debits, and nothing back on standing orders.
I’m assuming you’re talking about the reward current account here. Yes, costs £2 and up to £5 per month back.

What happens if I have a refund that comes in after I hit the £15k threshold to trigger the bonus on Amex Gold?

    • Anna says:

It’s been reported that IF the MR points are still in your Amex account they will be clawed back. If you’ve moved them out before the refund hits, you’ll probably just end up with a negative balance. Amex certainly claws bonus/retention MR points back if you get a refund as this happened to me earlier this year when a flight was cancelled and I forgot which Amex I had paid on and had to generate a further £800 of spend to get the retention bonus back!

      • Jenny says:

and what happens if you just dont return back to amex (or go back after 6 months?)

    • Rob says:

With the BA Amex, you need to re-earn the value of any refunds so I would imagine the same happens here. The bonus only comes at year end so I imagine it is only at year-end that they look at your net spend.
