The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 14th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just met the spend criteria for sign-up bonus on WE card. How long does it take for the SUB to post?
My monthly statement is going to be generated tomorrow, if that makes any difference.

  • Gavin says:

Any way to earn a few hundred IHG points, stays and credit card aren’t an option

    • Harry T says:

You’ll have to buy them or maybe use OpenTable.

    • Alex says:

I believe an open table booking for restaurants can earn a few hundred points. Haven’t done it in a long time so not sure if it’s still possible. You can always purchase minimum amount?

    • Gavin says:

      Thanks!

  • Rob says:

Apologies for the 30 minute outage earlier. This was down to our data centre in London having a wobble – it wasn’t us.

On the upside, I finally got my gas bill paid after carrying it around for two weeks.

    • Tony1 says:

Do tell, did you use Bendy, Che or Revolution to do this or some other combination of amigos or just cash ? this is important information we need to know …..

    • Babyg says:

london docklands area? my company had a wobble too

  • Graeme says:

    £60 PCR tests through BA!

    • Jenny says:

      Link?

        • Jenny says:

How many PCR tests do we need to buy in total. 3? (1 pre departure and 2 on the return?)

          • Rob says:

No, pre-departure tests can be lateral flow.

The pre-departure structure is not yet confirmed. You CANNOT take a lateral flow test yourself, look at the result and just pitch up to the airport if it is clear. There needs to be validation, eg the Qured service operated by BA where a nurse watches you take the test via video to ensure you can’t tamper with the swab.

          • Waiting2go says:

On the BA site it shows this discounted option under the early release section, but not the day 2+8 section…. does anyone know why would they be different?

    • Jonathan says:

This is a game changer. I wondered why an airline hadn’t done this before but assumed they couldn’t negotiate a decent enough discount.

I wonder how many of the bigger providers have reached the point where volumes are so low it was getting unsustainable. Considering staff & machinery will be 80+% of the cost getting a high volume workstream at £60/test is probably more profitable.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Expresstext was charging £70 to most airline customers already

        • flyoff says:

We paid £60 at Gatwick last month for Express Test drive through at Gatwick via the BA link

  • Jo says:

Is it possible to ‘hide’ a future flight booking from someone’s executive account? I booked a flight using my companion voucher for myself and my mum as a surprise for her big birthday. She is in my household account and so her details were automatically filled in and the reservation visible in her account. I called BA and they removed her executive club number and email from the booking but the flight is still appearing in her account. Any ideas? Really don’t want her finding out before we go….Thanks!

    • Phil says:

How technology savvy is she, could you just change the password on her account? Unfortunately, if she is on the booking, and the BAEC number was only removed after the booking was made she may already have received confirmations of the booking,

      • Jo says:

Thankfully she didn’t receive any email confirmations. I was keeping the password change as a last resort but looks like that’s my only option! Thanks

  • Lula says:

Got a new gold amex following a referral, but the refer a friend option isn’t live. Noticed others had had this with the platinum card. Any insight into how long it might take to appear and if there’s anything I can do to hurry it along?

    Thanks all

    • Nadeshka says:

Platinum applied for on Saturday, card arrived Tuesday (yday) and able to send a referral just now. When did you activate the card?

  • Sandra says:

Just booked 3 nights with IHG for the weekend around (hopefully) our sons graduation ceremony in summer. The Stay Longer Pay Less rate they are currently offering came up but there is a none refundable deposit taken immediately of 1 nights payment and it does say the whole rate is none refundable so guess if you do need to cancel they will just debit the remainder to the card on the account. Has cost me about £15/night more for a cancellable rate just in case, which is fine, but make sure you read all the rate details before pressing book.

    • Anna says:

Yes that clause made the offer pretty useless in the current climate! If you need a 3 night refundable booking with breakfast at an IHG property, Emyr often offers the best deals.

      • Sandra says:

It’s only a Holiday Inn for this Anna so think it’s probably outside Emyr’s scope. Price not too bad including breakfast but will keep checking in case it goes down nearer the date.

  • Igloo says:

Is there any way to top up an AJ Bell account and earn some points?

They don’t seem to accept Bendy so I was thinking something like Beardy backed Bendy into Che and then a slow movement from Che to AJB. Has anyone tried this? Or any other options I haven’t thought of?

    • Toddy says:

Bendy worked for me (backed by Hong Kong) into my AJB LISA.

      • Igloo says:

It think with the cards I have available it may well not be possible. I don’t qualify for premium banking yet annoyingly so Hong Kong sadly isn’t an option!

    • Reney says:

I think it depends what you back bendy with. I had creation which it rejected, because I had anti embarrassment set up, bendy sent the transaction to my tesco card which promptly charged me a cash fee even thou I went back in time straight away.

doesn’t beardy charge a cash fee for che top ups which cancels out the benefit to me.
