Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 14th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I saw JetBlue and Qatar are expanding their partnership – could be interesting in the future.

Also just a random DP, I did the Halifax bank account switch for the £100 bonus last Thursday night, had the money in the bank on Tuesday morning. Can’t argue with that :).

    • Harry T says:

Yeah, they gave me the £100 before my switch date! Much faster than Natwest.

      • 747_Brat says:

        +1
Mrs Brat also got the incentive yesterday before the switch date!

        • Harry T says:

My switch is on the 19th!

          • 747_Brat says:

Same for Mrs Brat, so wasn’t expecting anything until the 19th. But any dosh is welcome!

          • Wally1976 says:

Prompted me to check mine and yes, £100 received despite switch date of the 19th not reached yet 😀. This is for an M&S account that was being closed anyway (need to do my wife’s next) and also we’ve had switch incentives from Halifax in the past (albeit a few years ago).

  • Craig says:

Me again early, at work again, another hour to go. Whilst here I’ve been rebooking some IHG hotel reward nights. What I’ve noticed is the cash price went down a couple of days ago and the points price dropped tonight, by around 4000 points a night.

    • Jonny says:

      I rebooked a 3-night March 2022 165,000 points Kimpton Miami stay for 116,000 a few days later – so worth checking…

      • ChrisC says:

Yes always worth checking both point and cancelable cash rates on a regular basis.

One I checked recently for later in the year had dropped so much it meant I could stay an extra night and save some cash!

I never expect to see any reductions but always happy to take them if they are available.

        • Magarathea says:

Thanks for the heads up Craig. 30k points saving this morning. “Dynamic booking at its best!” 🙂

    • Definitas says:

I’m definitely going to keep an eye on rates because the hotel in Florida where we normally stay has doubled and a couple of others have almost tripled. I panicked last year and transferred most of my VS miles to IHG and am thinking that I should have gone to Hilton! I am not normally a hotel points collector and will definitely be leaving once I have spent the current stash. It’s way too much hassle

  • Mycity says:

Good Morning, I’ve got a Nationwide mortgage that allows me to pay off extra every month using my bank debit card, I’ve also a Metal Curve linked to Beardy anyone know can I make these payments by my curve with out charges of any sort?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

I’m more intrigued by how you make a debit card payment – I’ve looked before but never been able to find a way to do this?

      • James says:

Same, see no way of doing this in Nationwide online banking and no reference to being able to overpay in this way on website.

    Hi

Can anyone confirm that Pay Pal triggers the £150 Amex refund on Bus Plat ? Just got an accountancy bill 🙁

  • KBuffett says:

A new offer on my AmEx Plat Charge Cards today. Charles Tyrwhitt Spend £100 get 20% back

    • Crafty says:

Will anyone ever again buy £100 of work shirts?

      • Doc says:

Yes, I still need to wear a shirt to work everyday and being a keyworker, have not stopped working throughout the pandemic.
Need new shirts and also helps that I have lost weight!!! A new wardrobe beckons.

      • KBuffett says:

They sell a lot of other smart casual wear

    • Andrew says:

I feel like they are always in the Amex offers

    • Benilyn says:

Same but not word on me going back to the office yet… so can’t risk buying as I’ve put on weight… but gyms are open so hoping to lose some…

    • Andy D says:

Is there one at Bicester Village and will it stack with the 500/50 offer?

      • Andrew says:

There is one at Bicester and on the CT offer list of locations, the Bicester one is specifically included. It’s not overly clear (and wasn’t previously) if the Bicester offer is cumulative across multiple retailers there, so I’ve always bought a gift card from the visitor centre and done it that way. So unless you were going to spend £500 at CT, it might not work out.

  • 747_Brat says:

    Speculative Post:
With Lufty and now Lloyds Avios cards closing down, who do you think is next in line to close their miles & points earning cards?
My guess is Creation (just a speculation)!

    • Andrew says:

And then Curve becomes redundant and closes too.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

      Barclay card Hilton?

      • Andy D says:

Hopefully Hilton will have a different UK partner if it closes the Barclaycard – but not a carbon copy of the US product which appears to have flooded the chain with so many Diamonds that the tier is pointless wrt upgrades and such

        • TGLoyalty says:

The USA has always been rubbish for recognising elite status. I don’t think the Hilton card is the main driver.

      • Harrier25 says:

I hope not. It’s a fantastic free card that keeps my Gold tier alive!

        • Anna says:

+1, and nearly a million points generated over the past 3 years which are waiting for a stellar redemption!

          • Tracy says:

Me too Anna, saving my hilton points for a 10 night stay in the maldives for my 25th wedding anniversary in December 2022 🙂

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Creation has been on the brink of closure for about seven years now 🤣

  • N says:

Any ideas for orphan eurostar points? Got 7+ accounts with 95 points in them (can only transfer in 100s)
