We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hi,

Has anyone stayed in the Met Hotel Leeds?

It doesn’t have the usual IHG branding on the website. Is it more like another CP?

    Thanks

    • BrianW says:

      I have a few times.

It’s an old Principle I think, way below a normal CP standard. I wasn’t impressed with it if I’m honest.

      • DJ says:

        I see, thanks Brian.

I will just book the CP instead.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I don’t think it was refurbished after principal acquired it.

I thought IHG was turning it into an indigo?

      • Chrisasaurus says:

It did though, if I recall correctly, have gentleman’s hairdresser in the lobby.

Although I suppose being connected to the train station you might also argue it had a Sainsbury’s local and a Greggs…

Anyway, CP is a sound bet and has decent parking if that’s important. I personally always go for the Marriott (though still can’t get into the multi-storey first time) but it’s been closed for ages and it got rid of its pool IIRC?

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Think they hide it off their general branding for a reason.
Unless they’ve spent a LOT of money on it since the early 2000s when it was definitely stll a shithole then it’ll be in a terrible state by now. Probably still nicer than the Leeds Hilton though (the world’s ugliest hotel??).

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Oh, and it’s the Queen’s Hotel (not Met) connected to the train station with the hairdressers. That’s very faded glory too, but currently undergoing a serious renovation so will see how that pans out.

Queen’s also famous for, but possibly less keen to publicise …. er ….. Jimmy Saville lying “in state” there before his funeral. 😮

      • James says:

Yes, sadly never got the full Principal refurb before take over by IHG. Personally, I’d avoid and stay at the Malmaison or Doubletree is good too with the Sky Lounge, at least when open. CP Leeds had a bit of a refurb too a couple of years ago, rooms much better than they were but wouldn’t stay there again personally.

    • mvcvz says:

I grew up in Leeds and still spend several nights per year (except 2020) there on business. The Metropole was a craphole in the 70s and 80s, and hasn’t changed much since. CP every time for me.

    • David says:

Long walk to the CP … The Met is very unpleasant.

      • mvcvz says:

        Depends where you start from.

      • Tiff says:

I stayed there once in December 2018. The rate was £28 and I had no complaints at all at that price – worth every penny. Close to the railway station and a great historic building.

        • Tom1 says:

Have a feeling I stayed there when there was an IHG offer of stay 2 nights and get a free night voucher to use anywhere in the world.
I checked in for two nights, stayed about 20 minutes, and I’m still not sure if I overpaid at £30pn.

    • The Urbanite says:

I stayed as part of a night out a couple of years back. For something like £100 we got a two night stay and a free night certificate for any IHG hotel which I felt was a great deal. The hotel itself wasn’t terrible, recall the heating was a bit “all or nothing” but asides from that it was ok.

I quite like the Hilton Leeds, what’s wrong with it?!

      • John says:

It’s ugly from the outside but they have treated me ok on my stays (diamond)

      • Genghis says:

Kippers for breakfast at Hilton Leeds when I was last there.

  • J S says:

Anyone now if a passsenger arriving to the uk for less than 24 hours need a 2 and 8 test?
