The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 13th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Did anyone else switch current account to Virgin Money to get the 15,000 Virgin points? I’ve just received an email saying I’ve meet the criteria for their rewards, but the award is wine and not the points.

    • Bee says:

I will to call and they might ask whether you took the offer up on the app or website -say it doesn’t matter as the terms allow both. They will say it needs to go to the bundles team to cancel the wine offer and issue the points. About 2 weeks later, I got a call giving me the code for the points.

  • Bee says:

Is there a daily limit on creation cards?

I have an IHG card as my underlying card on curve and my transaction keeps getting declined due to size and I am within the curve daily limit and credit limit on IHG

    • Peter K says:

Depends upon what you are paying. Some types of spend have lower limits on creation.

      • Blair says:

Even at £200 per day, I am struggling this past week. Getting maybe £150 paid off on Amex across 3 days. Some days nothing will go through.

        • Genghis says:

          Amex would be max £700 / rolling 7 days, £500 / rolling 3 days, £300 / day

        • Steve says:

You’re paying Brighton? How, with bendy?

          • Secret Squirrel says:

            Doesn’t work for me!

          • TGLoyalty says:

If your topping up Rev or something it’s the same £700 pw limit.

          • Harrier25 says:

People keep commenting on here that there is a £700pw top up limit when using Rev with IHG. This is incorrect.

          • TGLoyalty says:

I have tried and failed and I’m sure they have too.

300/200/200 is the limit in a 7 day period.

You obviously have a higher limit.

          • Harrier25 says:

I do a lot more than that in one go. My account is always in credit by the amount I wish to top-up with though, so maybe that has something to do with the higher amount.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

  • John says:

Anyone know if Apple watches are cheaper in Heathrow T2 than the Uk highstreet / Internet?

  • Louise K says:

Does anyone have a mattress from Brook & Wilde? Do you rate them?

There is an offer on my Amex BAPP for 15% back. Wary of ordering a mattress online that I can’t test before buying but they seem to get good reviews?

    • Jonathan says:

I bought one of the luxury ones for myself & then 6 months later 2 of the standard ones for spare rooms. I’m happy & a lot of my guests have asked how to buy one.

Are you familiar with memory foam? It tends to be a bit warmer than standard mattress but I’m still ok with it & I’ve always been a hot sleeper (eg. use a 2.5 tog duvet in summer & 7 tog in winter). All the online mattress companies offer 100 day trials so nothing to lose really.

Remember the Amex deal will stack with other options including “poundco” & TCP.

      • Louise K says:

        Thanks for that.

I have only ever slept in a Tempur bed and I really didn’t like it – too hot and made me sweat. Would B&W be similar?

We also purchased memory foam mattresses for our sons and had to return them due to the fire retardant fumes. These were only IKEA but wonder if it’s an issue on other memory foam types.

        • Michael C says:

Our Caspers were (badly) smelly for about 36 hours – just left them unrolled, then no trouble ever again (and fabulous mattresses).

    • MKB says:

I posted a reply about an hour ago of my experience, but, for some reason, it has not appeared. I will try again.

    • Heathrow Flyer says:

We sent ours back – took an age to be delivered – and when it did turn up it was far too soft for 2 adults to sleep on. One of you creates a ‘sink’ that the other ends up sliding into.

    • KP says:

We bought it after we saw the amex offer. Very impressed so far on all counts and would order again. Its one of those places that overprices and gives heavy discount codes. So do look around before buying. We went with Firm and its ideal ‘softness’

    • SteveD says:

We bought one about 18 months ago or so. It was a medium Lux. It’s ok but not amazing. The memory foam remembers what shape I am rather than what shape it was before I slept on it.

Also they processed the payment using Stripe so the CB didn’t trigger. Everyone washed their hands of it, had a battle to get it sorted. No one else seems to have mentioned this so maybe they have recognised the issue.

  • Peggerz says:

If you have a Scottish postcode (or can get one) and are allowed to be in Scotland between 26/4/21 & 17/5/21, then Rocco Forte’s Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh may be the place for you. Get a night free on a booking by quoting the postcode. Early check in, Late check out, room upgrade, breakfast and a bottle of Prosecco. Access to pool & spa. £250 Sun-Wed £295 Thu-Sat. (So, from £125 a night).

    • AnotherUser says:

That’s tempting 🙂 Do you just phone and ask? How would you rate the hotel – better than places like the Radisson Collection one in Edinburgh?

      • Louise K says:

I haven’t stayed for a few years but it used to be fantastic.

Can’t be beaten for location especially if arriving by train. Rooms were huge and we had nice view of Princes Street gardens but room sizes and types will vary quite a bit.

Afternoon tea was wonderful as was breakfast.

      • Peggerz says:

They’re calling it the Neighbourhood Curfew Club. Check the website http://www.roccofortehotels.com
It is the Grande Dame 5* hotel in Edinburgh with a Michelin starred Resto and well worth the rate if you are eligible.

  • Optimus Prime says:

If anyone was thinking of going on a holiday to Israel this summer…

Initially only visitors traveling in tour groups will be allowed, since they’re easier to monitor, and so that the number of visitors can be capped
Within 72 hours of travel to Israel, tourists will be required to undergo a coronavirus test and an antibody test to prove that they were vaccinated or have immunity.
Travelers will be tested for coronavirus again upon arrival.

    H/T to OMAT

    • Tracey says:

I’m sure I’ve read that being vaccinated won’t necessarily show immunity on standard antibody tests.

    • TGLoyalty says:

What a complete and utter faff.

      • Jayne says:

Well, you’re a Karol Sikora fan, so you would think that.
Just don’t go and save us all your opinion.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Nope … you’re wrong there. Even if I was everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

The point is either you want to allow groups or you don’t.

If this is a trial then fair enough but if this is the long term plan then what’s the point! Test after test after test is not worth the hassle. Why ask for antibody tests if they are going to test you before and after arrival aswell.

          • Jayne says:

I’d check your twitter timeline and likes then. Clearly seem to be one of his biggest fans.

  • Lady London says:

Email them immediately and reject the refund stating firmly you had already advised them [details when and means] you specifically rejected this option and advised them you would be rerouting later/expecting them to reroute you by alternative transport at same time as booked etc.. and you made that clear. You reject this refund as an attempt by airline & agent [name them] to deprive you of your rights under EU261 which you had already advised them you were asserting etc. Make sure ideally to get it signed-for (proof of receipt) I would send as email as well to both.

Make sure you do it quickly, same sent to both agent and legal dept of airline jointly. Your tone is shock and a firm reminder. Demand they provide the rerouting you told them you wanted. Give them 14 days then MCOL them both as defendants for cost of your reroute no later than 21 days. (Look 3 days ago Jonathan followed by me and shortly after that by meta – you will sue them for fully flex replacement cost but likely not have to settle till shortly before using it and claim travel agent booking fee in your mcol meanwhile).

After that contact your credit card and raise dispute for the refund (I assume this is possible for a credit as it is with a debit.)

As a separate issue, raise a Section 75 dispute against the original purchase transaction for cost of rerouting. Amex likely to want to treat it as chargeback – don’t. Section 75 (credit cards only not charge cards) gives you full replacement cost and is statute so more powerful – chargeback gives only what you paid and is a card company system not a statute.

Come out all guns blazing to reject this refund – you must not let it rest.

    Let us know what happens

    • Lady London says:

      *above for @Mike

PS you might ask the airline first is there anything they can do directly with you to sort this…? “as it seems unfair on them for you to take legal proceedings because of problem with agent….”
