EXCLUSIVE: American Express Shop Small to return in June, tweaked

We understand that American Express is bringing back its ‘Shop Small’ promotion in June.

‘Shop Small’ is an established Amex offer which incentivises you to shop at small independent retailers. In turn, of course, it encourages small independent retailers to accept American Express in order to participate.

It typically runs in November but American Express has been running more restrictive versions in Summer in recent years.

It seems that it will return for Summer 2021, but with a tweak. Look at the logo:

American Express Shop Small Summer 2021

The Winter version of ‘Shop Small’ gives you £5 back for every £10 purchase you make at a participating independent retailer.

There is no limit to how much cashback you can receive, although you are limited to one £5 payment per retailer per American Express card you register.

As you can see above, the Summer 2021 version of ‘Shop Small’ will, under the current plan, give you £5 back on a £15 transaction.

What else do we know about Shop Small Summer 2021?

  • The promotion is currently scheduled to run from 5th to 25th June.
  • You will be restricted to £25 cashback per American Express card you register.
  • The standard rule on one payment per retailer per card will remain.

One thing worth remembering about Shop Small is that you have historically been able to register supplementary cards separately. This allows you to earn cashback at the same store on both your main card and your supplementary cards.

If you had been thinking about adding a supplementary card to your American Express account, you may want to make sure it is in place by 5th June.

For clarity, American Express funds 100% of the cashback. Your local shops are not paying to participate.

We’ll let you have more details on Shop Small Summer 2021 when it is officially confirmed.

This looks a lot like the Shop Small promotions on mainland Europe, “Spend 20, get 5 back”.

  • marcw says:

    Euros, I shall say.

  • Optimus Prime says:

My local Co-op participates in the schema or least it did in December 2019 when I topped up a Monese Premium card. That was an unexpected gift 🙂

    • Lady London says:

Unfortunate signposting from Amex as to their future direction of travel on benefits.

      A considerably lower percentage return.

1/3rd off is equalled by other offers available potentially.

And ceiling of £25 – so max £75 spend to earn on.

Then £15 is less likely an amount you are likely to spend at a retailer you haven’t tried before, than £10. At £10 minimum spend you’re much more likely to say “let’s give that cafe a try then” and end up spending £15 anyway.

      • Rob says:

Shop Small last Winter cost Amex £18m I believe. It’s not cheap for them.

  • AJA says:

Interesting development. I only managed to participate once the last time they ran SS. Several places where I was previously successful seemed to have opted out in the most recent round. I am not sure I would go out of my way to participate with the minimum spend at £15. I would see it as a bonus if I was spending £15. When it was £10 I stretched spending to hit the target, that’s a bit more difficult at £15.

  • Tracey says:

Two local participating shops that take Amex have a sign up saying minimum spend for Amex is £30. 🙁

    • Genghis says:

      Use two cards?

    • Rhys says:

How do they enforce this, though? Unless they ask every single customer they won’t know what card you use when paying contactless.

  • Louie says:

Question is, will supplementary cards qualify? They don’t in Australia this time round….

  • Andy says:

Are Amex business cards eligible for Shop Small?

Finding business spend opportunities at SS locations might be hard, but considering the offers on my new Business Gold aren’t really for business I suppose that doesn’t really matter.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Lol, you didnt realise it was too good to continue?
