We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone had a “Balance Segment Transfer” show up on their IHG credit card dashboard? £460 debited then credited on the same day. Any ideas what it is?

    • Genghis says:

It’s to do with interest earning transactions having been made on the card. The amount of interest paid, though, is more of an art than a science.

    • Patrick Cold says:

I`ve had some of these and they have only amounted to pennies.

    • Anna says:

I always get this after overpaying.

    • The Urbanite says:

It’s a technical fudge – that transaction accrues interest and appears after you’ve done a cash advance transaction.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Not in my case, I get lots of those lines & no interest fees payable at month end.

  • therooster says:

Should I book Emirates First Class from Paris to Dubai or hope that Emirates releases UK to Dubai for December?
There is availability from Paris but it is for our honeymoon and we would have no time in Paris just a few hours in the airport

    • Matthew says:

The STN Emirates flight restarts 1 Nov and if it is postponed again you will be switched to Heathrow. Might be worth looking at as availability is normally pretty good albeit often only 1 in First.

    • Lady London says:

Personally apart from your expectation of Covid travel requirements at that time I find Paris easier to reach than Stansted.

    • chris says:

ba ex Lhr is 1/3 the price at the moment to Dubai compared to Emirates out of CDG or LHR, its only mid haul is emirates worth that premium? Book it via ba holidays and pay the deposit and you can change your mind nearer the time?

Did anyone who did a Virgin M Plus account switch via the Virgin Red App get the 15K points automatically?
I had an email with a code for wine but when queried I was just told to wait for another email about the points. Still waiting…
Any reports of success by just waiting?

    • 747_Brat says:

I got the code for points automatically, without any issues. Never had to contact them for the code. It automatically landed in my mailbox the very next day after the switch completed.

    • paulm says:

I got the wine email, despite using the correct link. Spoke to them via live chat who confirmed I had used the right link, but had to call to sort. Spoke to them and said it will take up to 2 weeks to sort, but they will do it.

The number used was 0800 678 3654 and they were quite helpful and even called me back to update me.

      • FFoxSake says:

Ah that’s interesting. I was told to just wait. Seems like a call is definitely needed then.

    • Peter K says:

      Definitely need to call.
Mine worked automatically. Mrs K had to call. They sorted it behind the scenes after that. CS was a bit clueless all the way through, but the ones behind the scenes were fine.

      • DJ says:

I called and filed a complaint, as I had to chase it three times. Eventually you’ll get someone call you back and give you the code verbally over the phone.

        • FFoxSake says:

Got through to CS via 0800 678 3654 after 90 minutes queuing… they agreed I was sent the wrong code so will now pass to the “Bundles Team”, who will supposedly contact me either today or tomorrow with a new code for Virgin Red.
Thanks all, hope the thread helps someone else too.

          • FFoxSake says:

Further update – just had a call back from CS saying the wine code will needs to be cancelled first and then the new Red code for 15k needs to be generated, but this is a manual exception process and can take up to 3 weeks.
Oh well… patience is a virtue I guess.

    • Kay says:

Switch was yesterday, no email today yet. (I went for the points option)
      Worth waiting or calling?

      • TGLoyalty says:

The email takes a few working days

      • Dr Tom says:

My switch completed yesterday and I got the email with the wine code today.

Very efficient… apart from the fact I went through the points link…

Not relishing the idea of 90 minutes on hold to get this sorted. Sounds like this is happening to a lot of people, I wonder if it’s just a deliberate ploy to make us all take the less desirable bonus option?

  • BrianPTG says:

Looking for any thoughts on this if possible.

Cancelled Ryanair flight around a year ago and ~£500 voucher has just been extended.

The email said I can apply for a cash refund and that would be preferable to avoid ‘having’ to book a flight I might not need. However the original transaction was on my Virgin money/flying club credit card which I can cancelled around ten months ago.

I’d be hoping it’s as simple as refund to Virgin who contact me saying I have a credit and arrange to pay. However I envisage some complications dealing with Ryanair/Virgin etc if things go awry so leaning towards just keeping the voucher to avoid the potential hassle.

Anyone any thoughts? Anyone had a refund credit almost a year later on a closed card?

    • Matthew says:

It’s a doddle with Amex. You just call and have it transferred to your bank account. I’d wait for the email to say completed then call Virgin to get it refunded to your bank account. Amex let’s you keep cancelled cards in your online account so you can see when the refund hits. Not sure if Virgin do this so you may need to call a few times to see when it’s been credited back.

    • Lady London says:

Virgin card is really Clydesdale Bank. Not known for amazing service but you do have lots of ways of complaining about a UK bank if you need to.

Quite curious as to why Ryanair is trying to foist money on you. If you didnt vountarily opt for a voucher, could it be Ryanair is more worried about you having rerouting rights even on another airline you’re entitled to choose to be rerouted on a later date which Ryanair is not flying? something fishy here.

    • Harry T says:

Refunds on closed Virgin cards are no big deal. Just log in to the app or wait for a statement in the post. Ring them when you know and they can transfer to your bank account.

  • Andrew says:

As Amex platinum, when I refer someone to the free BA card do I get 24k MR and they get 9k Avios?

  • M says:

Partner had an Amex Gold, then cancelled. How long until she can be approved for one again?

  • Sina says:

Had my final statement for the M&M card! 34k points landed today! It will be missed!

    • 747_Brat says:

      No statement for me.
What is your statement date? Is it normally generated on 8th of every month?

      • Sina says:

Mine is generated every 7th but shows on 8th.

        • 747_Brat says:

          Thanks.
I guess I will have to wait until my statement is generated on 16th.

    • Rob says:

Indeed. Looks like I may be getting a VAT refund this quarter ….

    • Joseph Heenan says:

Same here – 58k points for me. Had a worrying moment when the dinersclub statement showed ‘0’ points earned but that seems to be an IT hiccup, the correct number of points was credited to my M&M account.

  • Nicky says:

Does anyone know what the situation at Newcastle airport is now that they have closed the BA lounge: Have BA negotiated with any of the other lounge providers to grant access if travelling First, Business or if one has status?
