Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    amex business platinum
does it have to be business use or would they frown upon if Sainsbury and waitrose are appearing on it

    • Jay says:

If only spend was Sainsbury and Waitrose then probably get alter after a while advising you that the card is for business spend. If for example Sainsbury and Waitrose was mixed in with other business looking spend then no issue.

      • Jay says:

*a letter not alter…. oops. It’s true that 90%+ of offers are personal related, but they do write if it is all clearly personal spend just to remind you … I speak from experience.

    • Rob says:

Given that I have offers on my Business Platinum from restaurants and fashion chains, Amex clearly isn’t too bothered. It does, however, print a warning on your statement each month that you shouldn’t do it. I’ve never met anyone who had a problem.

The issue is that shops pay far higher fees to accept business cards.

    • Aim High says:

      Thank you guys.
Yes I see that that if they are giving personal offers – then one can’t help it I guess. I also see the point of being ‘told off’ – its the first 10k that I am trying to hit any way…but in my head – I was able to achieve it by paying for private schools and some flights etc…

      • AJA says:

If it is a business card that gets expensed by a business where you are the employee you will end up creating a personal income tax and Class 1A NIC liability and P11D reporting issue on the personal expenses you put through the card if you do not refund your employer as they are not wholly and exclusively business expenses. That might be OK if you are the business owner but you will create a headache for your accountant and/or finance departments

        • Rob says:

Except these are not actually business cards because they have personal liabilty – although putting personal expenses through them, in theory, means you should pro-rata the part of the fee you reclaim from your business.

    • Ali M says:

Can you not get into trouble?
Is it worth having the points and being investigated?
I suppose as Rob said if majority is ‘justifiable’ then not a biggie and you can probably ‘carry the party on’ until that letter comes through, lol. so hit the 10k in one month and then be told off.

  • Will says:

Reward flight savers effectively gone? Rob is this a second devaluation?

    • The real John says:

      Elaborate please?

    • TGLoyalty says:

You have to earn atleast 1 point in the past 12 months to be eligible for RFS

    • Rhys says:

Have you earned an Avios in the past 12 months? If not, you won’t see RFS fares. I can see them.

  • Will says:

    see award wallet blog

    • Will says:

perhaps the awardwallet commentator fails to qualify for RFS 🙂

      • ChrisC says:

Someone didn’t click on the ‘more pricing options’ before writing an article.

    • Rhys says:

Ah, no. Award Wallet is late to the game. We wrote about the slight Avios redemption price increase here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2021/03/16/british-airways-increases-avios-flight-prices/

      Reward Flight Saver still exists.

      • Will says:

they say this is a second increase. 1999 miles distance flown now costs more than 2001

        • Rhys says:

By the looks of it they haven’t earnt an Avios in the past 12 months and are therefore not getting RFS pricing….

        • Jody says:

I don’t claim to be an expert at all, but just had a look at this and it looks as if they simply haven’t clicked through to get all the avios and taxes prices. Just checked a random Athens flight in January (off-peak) and after clicking through, I still get 18500 avios plus £35 which is the correct reward saver price I believe?

          • Will says:

the blogger just replied: Seems it may have been a bug? I had account activity in the past year. And now, this morning, I’m seeing the expected rates.
so everyone can relax…until the next BA ‘bug’ comes around

          • MD says:

You are entirely correct. Same for me checking just now. Crisis averted.

  • Diydegsy says:

Just took out the card, had the offer so saved , this morning spent £1010 and it’s already registered as I received an email from Amex so good result, just can’t see anything about the dell offer or Times subscription so any help appreciated.

  • Roger* says:

Anybody else unable to log into their Virgin Money account?

I usually do so on my mobile but can’t even enter my code. I tried online. They said they had sent me a one-time code to help. 30 minutes later, it hasn’t arrived.

    • Navara says:

      twitter reporting issues with APP

      • Roger* says:

        Thanks.

In the end, after I tried phoning and listened to the Sorry tape for 25 minutes, I tried again on the mobile. The Virgin Money page burst, er, tiptoed into action and I could see my accounts.

    • Patrick Cold says:

The app went down three times in the two weeks I was with them.

  • ChrisC says:

BA sale just popped up on the website

    Flights and holidays included.

Not looked in detail at dates or destinations but dates are generally Novemnber – March exclusding christmas week

    • Aston100 says:

Oh bum, I can see a better deal through BA Holidays for Barcelona in February half-term than the DIY I put together and booked the other week.
Someone please remind me if I can take an FTV for my BA flights and use them for a BA Holiday instead? (will almost certainly be the very same flights).
      Thanks.

      • ChristopherW says:

Just looked at the new BA sale for flights next February. The sale section of the website says flights are covered by the flexible ‘book with confidence commitment’, but when I tried to make an actual booking for a sale flight, the T&Cs clearly said that I could only change the date/time on my ticket. No changes to destination, no refunds (other than taxes) in the event of my cancellation and no mention of any voucher. Not having tried to book a flight for many months, I’ve no idea if this just a technicality/glitch which I can safely ignore or if it’s something new which could backfire on me. Presumably BA would like to get out of ‘book with confidence’ as soon as they can…

    • Clive Field says:

Yes just seen Dubai in First for £2K

      • Rich says:

Or £1920 with the £150 deposit pay later and extra Avios if you add a Budget car (not the £2001 quoted for Avis on the main page) via the BA Holidays. Looks to be a decent sale compared to previous.

  • Aston100 says:

Che Guevara just told me that his payment processor is “currently facing an issue which is causing card top-ups to fail”.

    • Anna says:

He was perfectly amenable this morning.

    • Aston100 says:

OK, Che is accepting cards again.
      Viva la revolucion.

      • David D says:

Che was having a siesta, or went dark for his/her revolutionary plans to take over the Bendy by disguising the Beardy with feathers of a Seagull from Solihull. After which the world looked rosy once again, and everyone was none the wiser about anything said or done once more.

  • Clive says:

Did i remember correctly that Virgin were offering some incentive for award bookings which they cancelled in you took a voucher? Could someone remind my of the deal if this was the case please.
