We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Some e-mail “SCAMS” pretending to be from Tesco landing
Saying you have been promoted to “Gold” and awarded 5000 points to spend.
    Don’t be fooled ?
(full Tesco page logo ect being investigated tracing underway)

  • Andrew says:

Looks like maybe Nectar is getting into the Airtime style linked payment cards rewards – just seen on the Nectar app “Nectar Connect” coming soon for linking cards for retailers such as Nike, Dunelm and Nando’s.

    • Joe says:

Yeah me too – interesting development !

      • David Butcher says:

Where on the app is this? I can’t see it

        • Joe says:

On the home page. But I can’t click on the button to do anything !

        • Joe says:

Actually – it’s just disappeared. It was called “Nectar connect”.

    • Scott says:

Not really places I shop to be honest, but there might be more.
It’s the same as 90% of my Nectar app offers that are for women’s clothes shops, and being a man, not places I generally shop, and they should know that from my purchase history.
Those I do get are things like 1 point per £ at Argos which isn’t much to bother with.

  • YC says:

How long does Amex take to confirm a linked Virgin account? I understand transfers are almost immediate to Virgin but I had only just linked it today

    • Travel Strong says:

Recommend calling them up instead. I’ve always ended up having to do it over the phone for the first time only (for the first time on that card account) – and then it’s instant. After that the self service online transfers are also instant.

    • Harry T says:

If it says pending, I would ring and check it’s linked properly. I’ve never been able to link it without calling CS.

      • YC says:

Thanks both – is that instant over the phone? For first time

        • Travel Strong says:

          Yes

        • Harry T says:

Yeah, it was for me. I did it over chat the last time and they had to unlink and relink. It then worked immediately.

          • YC says:

Update – Was a real struggle to link accounts. Ended being title not matching (Mis vs Miss)… Instant transfer after this though

    • Andrew says:

Yes seems to have disappeared from the nectar app. Must have been up there for testing/in error. I’ve found this page too, which explains more, but when you try and register it just errors:

  • Mco says:

Got a email today from a LCC in India. £3 for a RT-PCR test through them now. Not much use to us here but goes to show how much the price of these tests have fallen.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Most of the cost is in the people/process

You won’t ever get anywhere near that in the UK. £50 is a reasonable cost in my mind.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Bonvoy redemption – is it good value to use 160k points (including 5th night free) instead of £300 per night? What’s the average valuation nowadays? 0.33p per point?

  • Keely says:

Afternoon all trying to use evoucher online (avios and 241 booking ). Won’t accept it .. do you have to call for avios bookings..😬? Thanks

    • Genghis says:

You have a FTV, not evoucher. Need to call to book.

      • Andy says:

Not necessarily, I have an evoucher (clearly says so in the email) which has been issued with a typo in the email address and doesn’t work online as it should. Unfortunately had to call to use it as if it was an FTV

        • Genghis says:

So it’s called an evoucher but isn’t an evoucher? BA muck up? Regardless, still need to call.

          • Keely says:

Thanks all . Yes I had to call even though it was called an evoucher….!

        • TGLoyalty says:

As Genghis says if it involves Avios and/or vouchers its an FTV and you need to call to book.

  • Eric says:

Trying to search for an answer… how long after ordering from Amazon must I activate the Melia gift card? Was it 6 months?

    https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/16/discounted-meliarewards-points-available-on-amazon/comment-page-2/#comments

    • tom1 says:

yes 6 months from purchase – although I’m not sure how they know when this is – I don’t think they are ‘activated’ like an Amazon gift card etc.
I bought mine on 16th November so have activated recently – Melia points expire with 12 months of account inactivity, so the tip was you can buy 1,000 points for something like 5 Our next year to prolong for another 12 months.

From memory, the adding to account process was a little bizarre – looked like I was trying to buy more points rather than apply gift card to my account, but worked in the end.

  • Stu N says:

Just rebooked a BA cancelled flight, YouFirst agent voluntarily checked with supervisor around what was possible and confirmed they are applying original ticket validity restriction. No problems rebooking within that period regardless of Avios availability and no extra costs despite one of our dates going from off peak to peak. Looks like A380 outbound and 8 seat F cabin 777 on way back, though obviously that’s not locked in as not flying until the autumn.

I’m optimistic enough to have booked hotels (all flexible) and a US internal flight on Avios for this so fingers crossed now.

    • BJ says:

No surprises there. The question is will they allow rebooking outside the original ticket validity where it is no longer possible to book within it due to BA route suspensions? Will be testing in June, they can buckle or face the consequences of my booking an alternative on JAL or CX which will not likely be cost effective for them compared to putting me on a piece of their own 777 junk.

      • Ming the Merciless says:

I booked RFS for April 21 in April 20. After a cancellation from ba I need to rebook it for April 2022. I’ve been given a firm no twice (despite reading eu261 arrival 8b to them ). I’m booking a fully flex and submitting a mcol next week.

        • Ed says:

Be good to get an update on this published on HfP. Seems like EU261 should enable booking beyond 12 months of ticket being issued. So BA should be allowing rebooking to a later date??
