We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Reporting back: Creation has rejected my request for a limit increase. Same as others who responded to my question last week.

  • Kurt Kraut says:

Hi. Ist the lagecy Hilton Honors visa Barclaycard being renewed for existing customers? Mine expires this month but no new one received so far…..thanks

    • BJ says:

Somebody asked yesterday too, feedback was that people were getting new cards, some very early. Might just be a delay at moment, I’m sure tgere would be an announcement of some sort if cards were not being reissued.

    • Allan says:

      Recieved my replacement this week

      • Kurt Kraut says:

Thanks. Hopefully mine will arrive soon then.

        • DJ says:

The same, stuck with £1000 limit. The funny thing is that I kept on getting emails about their loan deals …

  • ant says:

Looks like my flight to Malta on 19 June is cancelled, booked using a Lloyds voucher. I haven’t received an email yet. First flight is on 21 June which is no good for me as need to be there on 20 June.
As it was booked through Avios what am I entitled to? Can I ask to be booked on Airmalta?

    • Blenz101 says:

You can ask but you won’t likely get. My guess is they will offer to re-route you via Iberia either via MAD or BCN.

As they have cancelled the flight you can take a full refund or rerouting. If they don’t offer up a direct flight then you can purchase your own ticket and attempt to claim it back from BA. You will likely need to MCOL/CEDR to force the issue. No compensation as more than 14 days notice / Covid.

Do take care with your return flight if this is also on the same ticket. Usually if you don’t fly an outbound the inbound will be cancelled automatically so get this protected.

Personally I would be looking to get a refund or FTV and then purchase an Easyjet flight. I wouldn’t want the hassle of a connection for such a short flight, neither would I want the pain of trying to claim an alternative flight from BA.

      • Chris K says:

Except Avios Lloyds voucher bookings are done through Avios.com who count as an agent, despite being owned by IAG. So the claim isn’t really with BA but with Avios.

From previous comments and on Flyertalk it seems like Avios will fight hard to say no to anything that doesn’t have Rewards seats available. Indeed it’s likely you’ll get an email next week saying your flight has been cancelled, here’s your voucher back valid until 30th October. Ring us to book again. That’s what happened to me when my May Cyprus flight was cancelled.

        • Memesweeper says:

Correct. Avios.com are not set up to deal with EU261 claims. Make your demands for rerouting, get their refusal in writing if you can, send a letter before action and give them a last chance to rebook you to arrive / depart in line with the original timing . If they fail book with another airline (return) and MCOL for the cost plus interest. I fought very hard (ultimately successfully) with Avios earlier this year but it took ages, you don’t have enough time. Assume they won’t help and escalate immediately would be my advice.

          • Lady London says:

+1 I do not see why avios.com should get away with behaving like prawns and never even bothering to sort out a passenger’s obvious rights to be rerouted that BA as the operating airline should provide quite simply through avios.com as the agent. But @Blenz101 and @memesweeper have got it right as to the practical action you should take swiftly.

On your MCOL claim don’t forget to add the 8% pa statutory interest you’re entitled to claim, to the whole amount.

  • Ammar says:

OT – not done this is in a while. I have spent nearly 9500 (more than i anticipated on the free BA amex card, but thinking before my year end in a months time, thinking of upgrading to BAPP and get the 241 voucher. Just wondering how is the best way to upgrade – start new application? or call up? Also if i get a referral from a relative will they get a referral bonus. I presume I will not get a sign up bonus so no point spending 3k.
    Thanks

    • Blenz101 says:

Best to just apply online as a new application, they will do the switch for you. I have done it over the phone in the past but that seems to be the same as applying for a new card anyway so best done at your own leisure.

I can’t see a card upgrade triggering a bonus but no harm in including the code.

      • BJ says:

I prefer applying online too but I think I recall people saying recently we have to call at the moment.

@Ammar, no referral bonus will be paid but no harm un trying but I don’t recommend you self-refer.

        • Ammar says:

CHeers BJ – yes as I value my Amex relationship, will get my sister to send me a link.

      • Ammar says:

Thanks Blenz101, will do it online. I will report back if any issues.

  • Blenz101 says:

For those that have been having fun funding an NS&I direct saver over the past twelve months you will find your interest has now paid out.

Whilst the forcing you to hold funds in the account for a full week before they becoming payable is annoying at the time it was nice to find well over £200 in interest today.

Next year will no doubt be a lot less since they cut their rates but its a bonus on top of the £30 a week in clubcard vouchers from the Tesco bank debit card that the account generates.

    • Toaster says:

£30 clubcard means £24k purchase, that’s quite a lot every week.

      • Blenz101 says:

Well the NS&I account allows you to save upto £2m. The £24k a week doesn’t seem to bother Tesco, they just seem to have abandoned their legacy current accounts.

Was a shame when Avios left but I can still generate £90 of hotels.com credit a week and no saving account is going to pay out anything close. I’ve not been able to think of a better use for that capital.

    • Harry T says:

There was a brief period where it actually was arguably a good idea to keep some cash in there, as the rates were competitive.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Doesn’t that breach the quarterly cap?

      • BJ says:

Since when did anybody care about breaches on HfP?

      • Blenz101 says:

The cap doesn’t seem to actually apply to points earned via the bank. That said £25k is the most I am comfortable with as I know sooner or later either Tesco or NSandI will want an explanation.

    • BJ says:

Thanks, who doesn’t like a cherry on top 🙂

    • Jonathan says:

Tesco Clubcard is still very useful for those who regularly use Virgin Atlantic, when free travel resumes of course!

  • DK says:

How long does it take for a Morrison purchase to track at PAW?

  • Carol says:

Has anyone stayed at Bubble Lodge Ile Aux Cerfs in Mauritius? Any feedback would be appreciated if so 🙂. Thanks

    • Si says:

I’ve stayed at Bubble Lodge Bois Cheri (different location but maybe same management?).

Being honest didn’t blow my mind that much. We had 3 nights there. One, maybe two would have been enough for the novelty. It may have been that there wasn’t that much else to do there other than sit in the bubble or sit in the restaurant area and I had already previously been to “better” jungle and tea plantation environments in the past.

You’re location may be more diverse and more entertaining though.

      • Carol says:

Thanks – I am thinking 2 nights maximum – the beach looks great and it seems a novel idea but I can imagine any longer would be too much, as you say.

        • Si says:

There was no beach at our one. There was a small lake with some knackered kayaks to help yourself to, but other than that, was a bit flat.

Your beach option would def give you an added dimension of entertainment and the bubble itself is def a very cool/unique experience.

          • Carol says:

I hadn’t seen the other one until you mentioned it – think I will book the one with the beach. It is set on a golf course and so not quite as flat. Thanks for the info

  • Bagoly says:

Apologies if it has been covered before, but how long does one get to decide what to do about a BA cancellation?

BA have cancelled my flights between LCY and TXL for end May (perhaps part of wider LCY cancellations?). They have offered flights between LHR and TXL at not so convenient times.
It is more likely that not that I will want to cancel the whole trip anyway, and would prefer cash to an FTV, but I won’t know until about ten days before.
So can I just leave their proposal sitting there until mid May, and then ask for cash?
Or is there a date when I will be deemed to have accepted their alternative flights?

    • BJ says:

JAL have cancelled mine from KIX-BKK, now happy I waited patiently for full refund. Came through today so all my BAEC cancellations have been trouble free. All refunded within 48h except one which took about 5 days IIRC. Nothing booked now until December so here’s hoping.

    • ChrisC says:

yes you can leave it until you have made up your mind. Obviously the sooner you cancel the sooner you get yor cash and BA then have a seat available to them

But definitly before departure as you don’t want to be marked as a ‘no show’
