We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Barclays Avios Rewards question:

Mid-March I changed from blue rewards to Avios Rewards (I had a premier account for a long time). Yesterday the Barclays app started showing “Avios you collected with Barclays: 4000” (which seems correct as it is 1500 + 2500 bonus), but nothing has actually posted to my BA account. (Also, the £12 fee has not been taken yet). Anyone knows when should I expect Avios to post?

    Thanks,
    M

    • Matthew says:

Mine is the same. I’d imagine it will sweep soon after the £12 is taken, which I think is a month after you switched to that reward scheme. We will know soon enough anyhow. I opened the account on 5 March, 1500 Avios ‘collected with Barclays’ on 31 March. Not in BA yet and fee not taken.

      • M says:

Sounds good, let me know if yours appears in BA in a few days 😊

    • kevbar says:

Same here, it’s been quite messy so far so I’m glad it says that in the app even if it doesn’t filter through for a while.

    • 747_Brat says:

      @M
Don’t think you will receive the sign-up bonus Avios until the 4th month of joining the Barclays Avios Rewards membership, which means you have to at least pay £12 x 3/4 in fees before you get to see your sign-up bonus!

    • Patrick Cold says:

Isn`t the 4,000 a result of 2,500 for joining plus 1,500 for the first month?

    • AlexH says:

It says on my account that the monthly Avios will post on the second of each month and the fee will be taken at the same time.

  • Jenny says:

How much notice do you need to give Virgin to change your ticket? 24 hours, 48 hours or 1 week? Booked after 3rd March rules.

  • GaryE says:

With BA changing the deposit amount on a BA Holiday – I have £400 sitting with them (£350 in FTV and £50 cc) for a holiday in December. The deposit now required is only £200 for same holiday. Do you think they would give me back the extra £200 either cc/cash/FTV to use towards another holiday?

    • ChrisC says:

      No.

Administration of these is complicated enough without adding partial refunds of already used vouchers into the mix.

    • MattB says:

If the price is similar could you cancel for a voucher then use to rebook?

  • Oliver says:

If you’re interested in cook-at-home restaurant boxes from places like Pizza Express, use promo code FreeDel0404 at GreatFood2U for free delivery (normally £7 to £9).

You can select any delivery date in the next few months.

Just re-ordered an excellent kit from the TGI Fridays selection. Thanks for the tip. Paid £48 last time and only £40 this time.I

  • Keiths says:

Does anyone know (or have a gut feel) as to whether all BA short haul will move to LHR from LGW after 30/6?
The reason for asking is that we fly out to SKG on 26/6 – this has changed to LHR.
The kids and their partners join us on 3/7
TBH, we are looking to cancel this holiday so would rather BA change the outbound etc so we don’t incur costs rather than taking a Future Travel Voucher (it is also complicated by a mix and match of Avios & one-way cash bookings).
    Thanks in advance

    • MadeUpName says:

Just a gut feel, but I would imagine less flights this summer vs last so likely to be all LHR again. I have no info, just guessing really until we hear from the government travel task force

  • Andrew says:

Continuing the discussion yesterday about the IHG points rates suddenly doubling for most properties, some have come down too. And if anyone’s interested in the IC at the O2, it’s 33k for most nights in the summer it seems which makes it one of the cheapest hotels in London, with an equally ridiculous 65k for the HIX in Vauxhall! Something is clearly wrong there – so hopefully things will level back, but worth jumping on the few lower rates that have popped up.

    • John Caribbean says:

Cash rates at the O2 look similar, booked two nights inc breakfast for about £330

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s also only around £140 cash – no deposit and cancel until the night before.

      • kitten says:

The current 3nightsfor2 offer would take a 1 night deposit but if you were sure you would give 3 full days notice you wouldn’t lose it.

    • Gerry says:

Do we think this is a fault ?

    • Anna says:

I checked my Xmas booking at the O2 and it had gone down from 40k to 38k so I’ve saved a few points there. Like summer, Xmas points rates in central London are insane, think the Kimpton Fitzroy was 100k on some nights.

    • avstar says:

IMO best value is Indigo Tower bridge – 26k over NYE

  • Gothbe says:

Question on travel vouchers for reward bookings. I have 4 travel vouchers resulting from 4 one way domestic reward flight saver bookings which were cancelled last year. Firstly, can they be used to make new reward bookings online, or do I need to ring them? Secondly, am I right in thinking that there needs to be reward flight availability on the flights I want to use them on?

    • ChrisC says:

You need to call and yes there does need to be avios availability.

    • Lady London says:

Since you took travel vouchers, you have to start again in pricing any new bookings. You lose any concession on your original booking such as a discount or previous lower pricing.

If you had not accepted the voucher when BA cancelled your original flight then you could have insisted on rebooking that same travel to a later date of your choice “rerouting” under EU261 regardless of any BA rules, practices, terms and conditions, or any BA system or agent incapabilities as EU261 was kept in UK law and supersedes. In that way you could have still used whatever deal you got including, say, the 241 you had used for the original booking even if it had expired meanwhile.

      • Lady London says:

PS just to be clear if BA cancels your flight, if you choose to rebook to a later date that works for you there does *not* have to be a avios seat availability on the flight you move to. You have the right to any seat being sold for money in your same cabin at no extra charge or fee whatever it’s being sold for.

If you take a refund or a voucher you lose that right. The choice is yours, not BA’s, which option you take.

        • Gothbe says:

Thanks Guys, the flights dated back to April/May 2020 and I had no idea when I would be travelling again so took the travel voucher. If I had known about the rebooking not needing reward availability I would have done nothing until I had plans. Shouldn’t be a problem though

  • Steve says:

On my newly acquired Nectar Amex there doesn’t seem to be a progress tracker on my account for the sign up bonus. Anyone else have this issue?

    • Peter K says:

Sometimes a tracker doesn’t appear. Of course, if you were not eligible for a bonus then it wouldn’t appear then either.

    • TGLoyalty says:

First personal Amex in the past two years?
