Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 30th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I recently took the Airtime Rewards referral from the user “Headlessforpoints”

My understanding was that I got a £5 bonus for using this referral, but apparently it’s just £1

Did I misunderstand the referral, or are the support team blagging me?

  • DarrenS says:

Question on Morrison’ s gift cards. Does anyone know how to cross refer the individual receipts to a particular card? None of the numbers match up, nor does the PIN under the scratch-off panel.

I have asked three Morrison’s staff and none knew.

    • 747_Brat says:

In my experience the numbers on Morrison’s gift cards never match to the receipts weirdly. I keep track of the card balances by calling the number on the back of the card and manually entering the card number.

      • Jonathan says:

Yes, makes it a nightmare for reconciling. I spent an hour last night having a sort out of my GC drawer. I thought I’d been shortchanged on some Morrison’s GC’s but eventually found the receipts which proved I’d got full value.

Full marks to JLP for having the easiest system for checking remaining balance.

    • Steve says:

Use a barcode scanner app on your phone to scan the barcode on the card – the number on the receipt is the barcode number, which isn’t the same as the gift card number printed on the card.

  • KBuffett says:

Are there any sites that share ‘hidden’ discount codes for bookings on hotel’s websites?

    • Rob says:

Not really, unless you want lists of corporate codes. Marriott has a few odd ones that very occasionally work and operate globally, eg M11 can bring up local promo offers.

  • Andrew says:

    Nectar.

Things are back to Normal this week. With 1080 bonus points available across 18 items at Sainsbury’s. Some items I don’t need, so will probably earn 800.

    • Red Flyer says:

Just got a double points on fuel for first time in 8 weeks but not as good as the last 400 points for £35 of fuel. Paper coupons at checkout have completely dried up for me and now just getting 10 offers at either 10 or 20 points each week as standard.

      • Andrew says:

The odd thing is, I’ve noticed the paper coupon printer is often making the printing noise, but us clearly out of paper.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

          That is the receipt printer…

If using the app, it is very, very rare for established customers to get paper coupons. New customers or reactivated dormant nectar cards are always a different story (it is a game that is designed to make you feel good)

    • Jamie says:

The fact you consider this to be normal is the problem. It’s not, and they will reduce again to more manageable and cost effective (for them) levels when they think they’ve got you hooked in.
      Prepare for future disappointment.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

No it is fairly normal to have offers in the 50 to 150 region. On the cost front, probably costs a lot less than say Clubcard when you factor in that a lot of people spend there points in Sainsbury’s

        • The real John says:

But that’s still around £5 discount on every shop that they don’t necessarily need to offer (in my case, as there are no alternative supermarkets).

Maybe they did see a noticeable drop in revenue for the weeks where they reduced the points on offer.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I stopped my online orders and they went back up, seems like a silly change to the system, they are now losing my custom from this feature

  • PK says:

I had a booking for Istanbul for August this year and had it changed to Dubai for April hoping it to be cancelled. The booking needed additional avios and cash .It’s been more than 3 days since it was ticketed and avios has come off the account but no authorisation on the credit card. When do they take the payment?

  • Joyce Lockley says:

Has anyone had any issues with the 500 bonus Avios deal, from when they first moved over to Nectar?

My points moved over okay, but I didn’t get the bonus. Nectar Live Chat gave me an Exec Club phone number and the customer assistant on that number hadn’t even heard of the deal and couldn’t find a record of it (I think he was admittedly working from home)!

    • DAJ says:

I’d be interested to know as my 500 bonus have not arrived.

      • John says:

        Mine arrived in both accounts:
Avios nectar launch offer 500 points
        Transaction March 9
        Posted March 11

  • Travel Strong says:

First of my June easyjet cancellations has happened (GIB). I’d have loved for it to have gone ahead, but once again I will make the most of the opportunity to turn a £50 round trip spend in to a peak season ticket instead.

    • Anna says:

Oooh, I’m tempted to book more EJ flights now … but so much already planned for next year I’m in serious danger of overdoing it!

Is GIB classed as UK for re-booking or are you sticking with it in any case?

      • Jody says:

Just had a quick look at this, when you filter to list destinations by countries they have put GIB all by itself!

      • Jody says:

I’m tempted too, but my husband might kill me if I do it again, as like you, have lots planned for next year! Still got my Corfu flights that were cancelled to rearrange, am just sitting tight on them to see what happens as to whether we can do a Greece trip later in the year if travel restrictions are lifted, or of not, will move them to next year some time.

Waiting for the Disney Cruise Line prices to come out for their staycation cruises they’ve announced, suspect they’ll be very pricey but would love to go on another if the price is right (I’ve done 8, yes I am a grown up really!). Prices used to be very reasonable, especially for the repositioning cruises as they thought they wouldn’t sell, when they realised there was a market for them they put prices through the roof and I refuse to pay what they charge now.

        • Anna says:

My husband has no idea how many mini breaks and holidays we’re (hopefully) going on. I’m practising my “I told you about that, it’s been planned for ages!” line 🤦‍♀️😂

      • Travel Strong says:

Yes, a GIB cancellation can only be rebooked to GIB for free. ‘Free changes to any other airport in the country’ … but the only option is GIB still 🙂 you can pick a different mainland UK departure airport I guess though! And good access to southern spain too.

  • Aim High says:

The game of points is dangerous. I see so many posts here for KYC and feel sometimes whether its worth it. I do move funds around here and there – not yet had a KYC but probably do 10k through a month through various sources. At what stage do folks get KYC – I try and feed using different underlying cards and 2k,2.5k at a time so not large enough that triggers a query…
any seasoned folks with good advice?

    • Anuj says:

If you have the disposable income where saving £10k a month seems believable you should be fine, otherwise I’d slow down as that seems a lot to me. However even with such an income if you’re shuffling around the same £10k instead of letting it accumulate and withdrawing varying amounts then they’ll probably still not look kindly to it.
