What are the peak and off-peak dates for redeeming Avios points?  This article looks at the British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus peak and off-peak Avios calendars for 2021 and 2022.

Remember that these calendars apply to the operating airline and not to where you book your flight.  An Iberia flight uses the Iberia calendar even if you book it with the British Airways Avios redemption site.

Avios peak and off-peak calendar

What if I am booking a partner airline such as Qatar Airways?

You need to remember that partner airlines are charged at peak rates at all times.  This applies to Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Finnair etc. You can see the British Airways partner chart here.

Where do the Avios peak and off-peak calendars differ?

I have reproduced the calendars below.  You will note that there are substantial differences between them. Especially when travelling during school holidays on a route served by both by BA and Iberia or Aer Lingus, it may well be cheaper to book away from British Airways.

Looking at 2022, Aer Lingus is always peak over Christmas, New Year, Easter and the Summer. It is always off-peak at other dates.

British Airways is far more granular with most months seeing a mix of peak and off-peak dates.

There are different peak periods around school holidays. UK bank holidays and half terms tend not to be peak on the Iberia and Aer Lingus calendars.

Of course …. you can only benefit from this if Iberia or Aer Lingus flies to your chosen destination, and you are happy transiting via Madrid or Dublin. Aer Lingus is launching direct flights from Manchester in Summer 2021 and this will provide some good opportunities to save Avios on flights to the US.

It is also not possible to use a British Airways American Express companion voucher if you fly with Iberia or Aer Lingus.

  • BJ says:

Usually a much anticipated article, if only it could also tell us the dates they will fly and the dates they will cancel.

    • Rhys says:

This is for 2022 – I hope things have improved by then!

      • BJ says:

Yeah, me too, we just need our European neighbours to get their act together and sort out the dog’s breakfast in their own back yard. Next year depends on nations getting vaccination programs sorted this year.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Quite a few additional weekends now peak in the 2022 BA calendar. Bit of a devaluation if you work M-F.

    • Rhys says:

On the other hand, it’s an improvement for anyone who wishes to travel during the summer holidays, which were previously fully blocked out. Swings and roundabouts.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

If the redemption availability is actually there in the middle of summer holidays (and a lot of those who care about school holidays will need at least three seats)… Weekends in June/September were never that bad on a lot of routes. I think ‘swings and roundabouts’ is a bit of an oversimplification.

        • aDifferentSimon says:

It’s loads better for summer holidays, I’m pleased. 12 august days versus 2 this year. Chunky saving on a family to the US.

          • Nigel H says:

I’m pleasantly surprised by the number of dates in the school hols. Yes you have to travel midweek but for a family of 5, this will make a real difference!

          • Anna says:

Indeed – next year is GCSEs in our house so it’ll (hopefully) be the first year for 10 years that we can go away at the start of July instead of having to wait till the end! For 3 of us in J or F this makes a big difference.

  • Trevor says:

Stupid question to start the week. Do these Avios peak/off peak dates equate to cash booking peak/off peak dates?

  • Gary says:

More Avios devaluation whilst Exec Club Silver and Golds see their earning year slowly disappear.

    • Genghis says:

I’m now extended to Nov 2022 so hopefully will see some work travel in 2022 to maintain status.

  • OT says:

Rhys the hyperlink to make the 2022 full screen isn’t working in the article for the 2022 calendars (nor the email).

  • Andrew says:

The Aer Lingus dates Summer dates are quite extensive aren’t they? Start when California start their school holidays on 10th June and go right through to when the English schools go back at the start of September.

But no February “local” holiday or “tattie howkin” holidays in October (or their English equivalent).

  • Hotelier says:

Thanks for this. Really helpful and BA changes in the calendar for my personal circumstances are welcome so happy with that too.

  • Babyg says:

Thanks for this – its always interesting to see this. I’ve never understood how they work this out, e.g. why December 14th is offpeak, that said it was useful for my return flight from DXB this year after the Abu Dhabi F1..(hopefully)
