We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

50% bonus when buying or gifting Avios until April 11th, 80%bonus on Flying Blue if not already covered.

  • Reney says:

In case anyone needs a laugh today. I sent an online request to increase my Virgin limit. After no comms for a week, I called and the person gave me the max limit increase. I just received an email confirming my limit REDUCTION to the new higher limit….

  • MKB says:

Sorry for re-post, but my late-night one yesterday was probably missed. If anyone has any spare British Airways First pasta bowls they’d like to sell, please contact me on MKBmain at gmail, as I managed to break one of mine last night. (eBay doesn’t seem to have had any for a while.)

  • MKB says:

Be careful using Waitrose/John Lewis gift cards. I had one on Saturday (bought in Waitrose) where the gunk covering the PIN was particularly hard to shift, and I managed to scratch off the PIN entirely. I am now having the palaver of having to send photos of cards and receipts to John Lewis in order to get a replacement.

The problem seems to stem from the fact that the cards are not actually plastic but just stiff card, and the gunk you scratch off smears as you do so, rendering some digits indecipherable. Further scratching is then dangerous.

JL cards I got from Morrisons were not quite so bad.

    • Jonathan says:

Some are cards, using the same plastic that’s used for bank cards, others are just layers and layers of paper with a flashy and glossy finish on the top and bottom

You dont need the pin to redeem instore?

  • Lee says:

Had my first covid vaccine Saturday, side effect was mild but noticeable.
A huge thank you to all the staffs and volunteers like Craig.

    • Craig says:

Thanks Lee, it’s quite honestly one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Back out again on Thursday, shame the warm weather won’t last until then.

Has anyone had any luck getting BA to extend their Amex companion voucher further than the automatic 6/12 months?

I have one that expires on 5th August 2022 (has been extended by 6 months), which I was originally hoping to use in mid August 2021 but I’ll now want to use in mid August 2022.

Ideally I need it extended by another 2 weeks but I’m not sure how flexible BA are with this type of thing.

    • Genghis says:

If no luck, remember you can book a cheap zone 1 flight and then lump everything into a FTV valid until April 23.

    • Anna says:

I very much doubt they have the ability to do individual extensions but as Ghengis says it’s relatively painless to book a one way Zone 1 avios flight then cancel it for a FTV. I did this last year genuinely hoping to travel last month but the FTV has extended my 241 for another 2 years so it’s worth it.
I don’t know if it’s still the case but originally you had to use the FTV for the original passengers which is worth bearing in mind if that’s still the case.

    • Dave R says:

Thanks.. I hadn’t thought of going down the FTV route.

Any idea how easy FTV’s are to redeem compared to normal bookings using a companion voucher? I’m hoping to snag 4 tickets to Orlando, so I was planning a late night online booking at T-355.

      • Anna says:

I think you have to call to use them, though there has been mention of some FTVs being converted to electronic vouchers which I haven’t read properly as I won’t be using mine for ages.
In those circs, if the 4 Orlando seats weren’t there when I called, I’d get 4 seats to NYC or similar and get cheap connecting flights, or MIA and drive. If our summer trip goes ahead we’re turning it into a little road trip from Miami to Orlando and back.

      • Genghis says:

Need to call. eVouchers only issued on £££ flights.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

One of my Aug 21 vouchers has been extended by 3 months.
I think that is all they will do on that one.

  • Chris says:

Currently in the process of buying a new house, means i’ll have a large solicitor bill followed by a large LBTT (Scottish Stamp Duty) bill. Anyone got any tips on how to leverage points options?

Sadly my solicitor has just provided bank details so unclear if there’s a way i could pay this via my credit card(s)

    • Anna says:

Billhop if you’re willing to pay the fee (you might be able to negotiate a small discount for large amounts)
OR, if happy to use Visa or MC rather than Amex, Revolut would be an option, though you might have to do it in chunks.

      • Anna says:

I paid for around £2k of legal work via Billhop last year to trigger the 15k bonus on Amex gold, no one queried the payment method.

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

If you have one of the Creationist cards then use these to top-up a Revolutionaries account and do the bank transfer from there. If you have Bendy and you can then use that to clear the Solihull balance so much the better 🙂

      • Kyle says:

The latter does not allow me to clear the balance until the charge posts. And if I wait until it posts and clear right away, I still end up with a cash advance fee. Is there a workaround for this? TIA.

        • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

My second sentence should read “If you have Beardy” NOT Bendy – Apologies for any confusion caused ! Beardy can be used to pay down a balance on the Creationists without any charges / cash advance fee (although you may end up with a small interest fee on Creationist side unless you first have it in credit prior to Revolutionary transfer, or manage to get the Beardy payment to go through same day value).

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Yes copy the link to pay bendy, you can reuse it

Or pay it off by bacs

  • BH says:

Does anyone know if Morrisons sells Apple Store Gift Cards (not iTunes) please?
