The HfP chat thread – Monday 22nd March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is it possible to overpay a santander mortgage with the M&M card (ie being a prepaid card, would it behave like a debit card and incur no cash advance fees?)
Alternatively, would Tesco debit card earn clubcard points or does it come through as an excluded financial transaction?
I’m willing to try it and see but I bet someone here already has.

For anyone doing Test to Release, if your day six is a Saturday, make sure you choose a provider who operates seven days a week. An extra £85 to send back a test on the same day as my day eight test is probably going to buy me a day and a half’s freedom, which hardly seems worth it. A bit more research/due diligence would have seen me book with a service that could have collected my test on Saturday and processed it over the weekend.

    • Blair says:

Where would you be going in that day and a half anyway? With nothing open that interests me, I’d happily sit inside for 14 days. At least that’s what I am hoping for with a summer traffic light system.

      • Liam says:

Honestly, I’d probably just be helping my parents (with whom I’m quarantining) by doing the shopping or taking the dog for a walk.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Personally I’d just stay home for a extra couple days.

    • Pete M says:

Good advice! Collinson, in person, are a good option as they operate 7 days a week and seem to turn around the tests pretty quickly.

  • Josh says:

Is the 25% off Iberia gift card offer still happening? It pops up all over my FB but when I click through, it doesnt appear on the website.

May need to make an essential trip to the in-laws in the US next month and this would be a great little saving

  • Justin says:

I used the UberEats 10% promo on my Amex last week. Being a fantastically generous person, I add a tip. For some reason the tip was billed first, so that got the 10% off, and not the meal 🙁

    • Blair says:

Omg tragic. Great tip for the rest of us tho

      • Lady London says:

        Truly tragic.
        I’m sorry I just couldn’t stop laughing!
        Thanks for letting us know.

    • Andrew says:

Got to be careful of that!

Did the same with paying an energy bill with a Spar offer. £334. Maximum of £300 per Paypoint transaction, so cashier was having problems, and was shown what to do for the first transacion of £300. The supervisor then just did the £34 on a different till herself for speed.

I got £3.40 back due to the way the transactoins were sequenced.

Are there issues paying HMRC today?

  • Tom says:

    Afternoon,

Does anyone know if there is a limit on how many Companion Vouchers you can have in one Executive Club Account?

With the extended expiration on my two existing Companion Vouchers (earned with BA Premium Plus Amex), I am about to earn a third Companion Voucher, and after that will likely earn a fourth Companion Voucher by end 2021.

I know I can only use two Companion Vouchers on any one booking, but is there any limit on the number of Vouchers I can have active and awaiting redemption in my Executive Club account?

    Thanks

    Tom

Has anyone had their Barclaycard closed down for using it to feed Blenheim?

I got a letter closing my accounts, not sure why.

    • Anna says:

      Did they give a reason?

    • Lee says:

      What’s Blenheim?

    • Anna says:

If it is for that, it’s the beginning of the end …

    • Blenz101 says:

Plenty of reports across the internet of Barclays being quite risk averse and closing accounts. Admittedly a lot of them are from the US.

They are not far behind HSBC in terms of having a very low tolerance for MS style activity.

I think you can usually write to them for an explanation and will likely be told “account usage following audit” or similar.

Could be helpful to others if you post what you were doing and at what sort of volume. Biggest risk would be not having enough steps in your recycling chain. Or using a Barclays current account alongside the Barclaycard to move money around.

      • Tiger says:

        +1 for Barclays being a no-nonsense bank.
The blocked and shut my account for just transferring money in and out to meet the income criteria for Premier. Not sure if they left any CIFAs marker on my credit file. Definitely not worth the risk for a few thousand points. Lesson learned the hard way!

Amex and Curve (metal) both not working on BMW Finance automated payment system – ‘..we do not accept this type of card’.

Managed to pay with the Curve card last month just fine. Anyone else had this issue?

    • Anna says:

Speak to them? People have reported being told that it’s something to do with BMW staff working from home, though it’s not clear how that would affect an automated system. Please report back as I am getting a BMW next month and want to make the payments on Amex!

      • MinR says:

I spoke to them last month, and they mentioned something about WFH.

Amex didn’t work, but Curve did which is still better than paying by DD. But Curve got declined today, and I can’t get through to anyone (+40 min on hold!)

        • Anna says:

Well the showrooms should be able to open from April 12th so at least at that point you can go and speak to a person about it!

          • James says:

The showrooms will just direct you to BMWFS, completely different company that the franchised dealerships.

          • Harrier25 says:

Nothing will be open if everyone carries on doing whatever they want. The R number is rising and looking at how people are falling back into near normality, nothing will open on the 12th April.

      • DAJ says:

What’s this about being able to pay on Amex?! Is this in place of Direct Debit?

    • Sina says:

Just used my plat amex today to pay BMW, although I had to talk to someone to do it, but they mentioned their systems are acting up today!

      • MinR says:

I thought they couldn’t process payments over the phone because of ‘Security’ reasons
