Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 22nd March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Raveon says:

Thinking about signing up for an the IHG credit card but can’t decide whether to hold out for an enhanced sign-up bonus, like the 20k points (last offered this time last year) vice the current 10k. Any speculation / thoughts on when we might see such a bonus offered again?

    • Benilyn says:

Has happened once since 2018 I believe so I wouldn’t hold your breath. Personally I’d sign up before they completely remove the card!

      • Genghis says:

It’s happened twice since cards came out under Creation. I’ve had the card twice under the promo.

    • Sandgrounder says:

Don’t forget about the current promo, if you will be booking a stay in the current 3 nights plus sale you will get an extra 10k for using the card. I cancelled the black card hoping to go back later for an enhanced bonus, look what happened to that!

    • memesweeper says:

Don’t hold out. It may never happen and it’s one of the few good non-Amex ones left.

      • Alan says:

Agree – better to get it before they pull new applications altogether I’d say!

  • Benilyn says:

Speculatively picked up a grand of TRY in the early hours for future holidays. Was a bit disappointed by Revoluts GBPTRY rate, get like 1.5% off spot but this was early hours on Monday night

    • Benilyn says:

      In the TRY sell off*

Shame most hotels (at least in Istanbul) price their hotels off EUR rates and not local

      • Aston100 says:

They are required by law to accept their own currency (despite what they might try and tell you).
Though if you are using a credit card, it probably matters not.

        • The real John says:

They accept TRY in cash and may even charge your card in TRY, but the room rate is in euros so will cost more TRY when the lira drops (which is why the rate is in euros).

    • Aston100 says:

Why would you take so much cash with you?
Other than bazaars and small kebab places, everyone else takes plastic over there.

      • Callum says:

Because they’re speculating on the FX rate after the sharp fall in value.

  • KBuffett says:

Is anyone here a member at Pennyhill Park? Looking for comments as to whether you feel it’s worthwhile?

  • Kai says:

Changing 50% Avios flight – IIRC people have managed to move cancelled flight to next year via online MMB right? Trying to rebook to January 2022 and get a “Something Went Wrong” error message when I click confirm 🙁

    • Anna says:

People have said it works if you do it through the app.

      • Kai says:

Cheers, tried app too but it just redirected to in-app browser and had the same error.

    • Sam G says:

It’s very YMMV – you are relying on the engine not working correctly to let the change go through. I have the same as you and it’s the correct behaviour unfortunately, so nothing you can do about it. Refund most likely option for me & hope for a new sale in future!

      • Kai says:

Thanks, will keep trying as the flight date is not till two weeks later…

    • HBommie says:

Is it direct or connection at LHR? A connection will require a call.

  • Mr. AC says:

Anyone has recent experience of departing LHR? How likely is the international departure declaration form to be checked and supporting evidence demanded?
Wife and infant need to travel overseas for medical treatment, but it’s non-emergency (it’s just that NHS wait time is 6+ months…). Examples on gov.uk reference treatment in hospital or visiting someone critically ill.

We also have a residential property overseas that we’re planning to rent, wondering if putting that into the form is a safer bet even though that’s not the actual reason.

    • Liam says:

Could you put down both as reasons? A friend recently travelled from LHR to the US and seemingly had documents supporting two different reasons for travelling, just in case, but as I’m still a week away from doing that trip, I don’t know what the form actually looks like.

    • Anna says:

I can’t see any problem if they have the appointment details, I don’t think there’s any requirement for it to be emergency treatment as presumably you’d expect to get that here!.

    • Pete M says:

You’d have to be phenomenally unlucky to get checked.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It doesn’t say your medical treatment needs to be an emergency

    • Mr. AC says:

UPD: saw them off at T2. No trace of anyone checking people’s reason to fly. Nobody asked for the form.

  • DK says:

Virgin Money 15K switch offer. What number do you call to sort out erroneous wine code?

    • Jay says:

Try in app chat (so you have an audit trail of the conversation) or call 0800 121 7365

  • Joe says:

We are in the process of kitting out a new house – and this has been an excellent offer for us! They are also 3 Avios / £1 via BA Shopping Portal, and very competitive on pricing.

  • Ron says:

Airtime – does it work with curve or do I need to register the underlying card on airtime? Spends from last Tuesday still not tracked! Thanks.

    • Andy says:

I had presumed that it wouldn’t but if you Google “Curve Card Airtime Rewards” the top link is to the Curve community, and there’s plenty of people saying it does work.

      • Blair says:

Works with Curve and does NOT duplicate the bonus onto the underlying card.

        • Blair says:

Granted I have both Curve and underlying registered but paid with Curve

        • The real John says:

So all we need to do is get Curve spend to be on airtime
