The HfP chat thread – Saturday 20th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Nick says:

If I purchase 4 one-way tickets from say LHR to Athens – can I change the avios pricing option later?

for example, if I go for say 60000 Avios + £2 today – can I later change it to say 40000 Avios + £70?

Also, if I want to change the date to later – do I lose the cash element (ie wither the £2 or £70 in the example above)? Or are BA allowing totally free changes?

    • Anna says:

I’ve lost track of BA’s policies on changes but normally on avios bookings you’d have to cancel (and pay £35 pp) and rebook at the different rate.

    • AJA says:

I’m not sure why you would want to do that anyway but the best option is to buy the tickets using the old RFS level ie pay fewer Avios and more cash.

That said I don’t think you can change Avios pricing once purchased.

The only way to do it would be to cancel and then repurchase but you risk the reward seats not going back into inventory. If you have enough Avios and seats are available you could buy new seats at the different price and then cancel the original reservation.

I think you are allowed one change free of charge under the Book With Confidence policy.

Has anyone here tried purchasing hotel points on points.com using curve recently? I made a purchase today, shows on curve but no email & it stated details not correct in red on points.com page. How long should I leave it until trying again as I don’t need two lots of the points.

    • Harry T says:

I wouldn’t try again. I’d contact Points.com and flag the issue. Make sure you have screenshots too.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

It did give an error message so I’m thinking it will drop off curve by Monday as didn’t process correctly.

        • Harry T says:

Probably will drop off Curve but it might be worth asking Points.com if they can reverse the charge and also help you figure out why it didn’t work.

          • RussellH says:

No Curve or Revolut, but no problems paying with USD in my Transferwise multi-currency a/c, using the Transferwise debit card.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Revolut preloaded should not give any issues paying in usd?

        • Harry T says:

You can also hold a separate Revolut USD account if you want to exchange at a time of week that is better for you, or lock in a certain rate. I think they charge extra for exchanges over the weekend. I can’t see how paying with Revolut would cause issues.

    • roberto says:

I bought some Hilton points this month with curve. No problems at all. Needed a hundred thousand or so to be able to book 10 nights at the Conrad Rangali Island. They turned up a couple of days later.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

How long did it take for your confirmation email to arrive roberto?
I purchased some Hilton points a few months back with no issues?

        • roberto says:

The email took to two days to appear. Purchased on the 3rd March and was the 5th by the time it was confirmed. The charge appeared on my Curve straight away as well as the underlying Virgin card.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Revolut worked fine, so issues with curve today for me x 2.

    • Alan says:

.Sounds similar to my NSi problem earlier today. The transaction was rejected by NSi but is still showing on my curve.

  • Alan says:

I am getting a new NSI error while trying to buy PBs with Creation > Metal

“The record status does not allow this action” with advice to try again later.

Anyone know is this is a Metal related issue or just more NSi IT flakiness.

    • Steve says:

For what it’s worth I successfully did Creative, Bendy (personal, no metal, no fronted), Ernie today. No errors

    • Red Flyer says:

Have you checked you have not exceeded your daily or monthly limits?

      • Alan says:

Yes, tried for £2k and then £200 to check I wasn’t having a limit problem. I have not spent that much overall on PBs, around £17k and no recycling so am not breaking Metal’s T&Cs.

  • Optimus Prime says:

If you cancel a BA Holidays package with flights upgraded with Avios, do you get the Avios back even if it’s in a FTV?

    • AJA says:

I don’t think so. I think the Avios are held together with any cash paid in the value of the FTV.

      • Optimus Prime says:

If the FTV includes the Avios used for the upgrade then I’m happy. I just want to know if this is a case similar to ‘seat selection fees are not refundable’…

        • AJA says:

I think you will be OK and that everything will be included in the FTV. You are essentially cancelling a trip that is in the upgraded cabin.

        • BJ says:

No, it’s not like the seats, you will get the avios back and presumably into the FTV if that’s what you’re opting for.

  • Josh says:

Finally got the Barclays Avios offer to appear and enrolled however I’m not sure where to trigger the account switch for the 26k bonus avios? Can anyone guide me with this?

    Thanks!

    • Sam G says:

It’s under “products” in the bottom of the app and then scroll down to “our services”

  • Andrew says:

    Doesn’t work with Amex

  • PK says:

I am keen to book flights to Dubai using Avios+cash(RFS) for April 2021 and hoping that they get cancelled and move the dates for my favourable dates within 12 months of my original booking . I am prepared to gamble 35 GBP cancellation fee if they are going to fly.Is my thinking correct .Thanks

    • roberto says:

Yes. Its a sensible plan , I did it to extend the 50% off deal from last year into September.

I have also been using FTVs to book flights that I thought would be cancelled to get a cash refund.

    • Rob says:

      Correct.

    • Andy says:

There are rumours that the UAE will go off the red list in April, at which point BA will be likely to resume flights / no longer cancel them. But as long as you’re willing to risk the 35£ cancellation fee, you will be fine

  • Andrew says:

Doesn’t work with Spree Cards, but someone else who posts here reported success with One4All Cards.

It works with the Virgin Credit Card offers (15% for me), and it *should* stack with other offers unless they say otherwise in the small print.

There is, of course, a T&C Caveat:-

“2.10. If you register payment card(s) that have previously been registered on the Site with another Website for a
similar purpose, this may exclude the same card collecting Virgin Points, irrespective of whether or not the retailers appear on another Website.”

I’m generally happy if at least one of the in store offers trigger and don’t chase the ones that don’t.
