The HfP chat thread – Saturday 20th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

BA to call it a day re Waterside ?

“It’s not clear if such a large office will play a part in our future,” British Airways said in a memo to staff.

    • Pete M says:

I’m just intrigued by who these companies that are getting rid of all this office space think is going to buy it…? Huge building and terrible public transport links – can it really make them much?

      • Andrew says:

Perhaps flatten it and turn it into a Barratt housing estate.

      • roberto says:

Waterside sits on the land where the 3rd runway is planned so was on borrowed time anyways.

        • BJ says:

100 years borrowed time … by then everybody will have pesonal spacecraft.

          • TGLoyalty says:

But no one will leave the house anyway because we will all shop online work from home and international travel will still be banned

    • kitten says:

      …meaning it ‘is’ clear 🙂

  • Oh! Matron! says:

Nowrooz to all out there. Hope that your having a great day.

  • Crafty says:

For the person compiling information on energy providers:

    – Green Energy accepts overpayments using Amex
    – So Energy accepts overpayments, but not using Amex

    • Steve says:

Thanks for the info! Would Green adjust the DD as a result of the overpayment?

    • Tracey says:

Ovo allow overpayments and pay interest at 3% to 5% depending on membership length. Not sure if you can use Amex.

      • Anna says:

Ovo doesn’t accept Amex. Other than that they’ve been great until recently when their online request facility for refunds seems to have broken. Sorted it via chat but that was a lot more hassle!

    • Polly says:

Peoples energy accepts Amex payments online portal

    • Track says:

Careful! If requested, overpayment will be returned to underlying card, not bank account.

  • Mco says:

Some people have mentioned that they are able to move their cancelled BA flights forward by more then 12 months online. How did you do that? When I log in online it only gives me the option to call up to make any changes or accept the booking. No option to accept it or change dates.

  • meta says:

Unless the button shows in Manage my booking it won’t be possible.

    • Definitas says:

That is incorrect. There are numerous cases being reported on FT where new tickets have been issued. There have also been numerous posts of people hangup and calling back to get a more favourable approach. It is definitely a case of – if you don’t ask (more than once), you don’t get

      • Lady London says:

All I would suggest is be reasonable in why you can only travel so late once your original flight has been cancelled.

Obvs there are reasons such as being only able to travel at times your work would let you which for long haul might work out to once per year, or your travel might depend on others’ plans or for a specific event with a date you don’t control annually, etc. Just think through what your own reasons are.

      • meta says:

        @Definitas please re-read the post from @Mco

He asked about the option to do it online. I was simply referring to that.

        • Mco says:

Some people had mentioned that the old BA website allows you to do this. MMB always goes to the new website. Anyone know how to go to the old version.

        • Definitas says:

          Apologies, I misread the question

  • TJ says:

Virgin have cancelled my flight to South Africa which was to be expected (using the 50% points redemption offer last year). I’m keen to re-book but Virgin stating that differences in the fare will be applied. Has anyone manage to get around this? Or will I have to stump up the extra 50% in points?

    • Anna says:

You’re entitled to re-routing at no extra cost as per EU261, however the problem might be knowing when travel to South Africa is going to be viable again.

      • Anna says:

Sounds like Virgin have been borrowing BA’s script on fobbing people off recently!

    • Lady London says:

you could check yesterday’s daily general thread where the exact same question came up regarding Virgin and there were clear answers given.

      • TJ says:

Thanks, found it…actually it was Thursday’s chat thread not yesterday. Looks like I may have a battle on my hands but I’ll just cancel if I don’t get what I want.

  • Anna says:

BA refund/Amex data point. I’ve opened 2 disputes with Amex for refunds I was still waiting after well over a month (avios plus 241 refunded, but no cash). Both credits appeared on the respective Amexes within 48 hours, so thumbs up to Amex.

    • KBuffett says:

It’s not really a valid data point. Amex refund almost immediately. But this is temporary and the dispute is still open. They can claw it back at a later date if you lose the case.

  • Nate says:

    Hi

I could not see in the article posted yesterday but can you be referred for AMEX platinum business card (in the same way you can be referred for personal cards to get additional bonus for both person referring and one applying)?
