We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Regular shoppers of Asda will know that their POS terminals do not take Amex Contactless payments; so I was impressed when I went into my local one today that they have upgraded all their machines and such payments go through seamlessly. Makes life so much easier not having to put in a PIN every time!

It was an Asda in Scotland though so not sure if it is the case for the RUK.

    • Paul says:

Our ASDA still ‘says no’ to the card, but is fine with Amex contactless via Apple Wallet.

      • KBuffett says:

There was a reader on here that was ‘senior’ as Asda and said he was going to try and get it resolved!

        • Crafty says:

          That’s me. I’ve tried. Apparently it’s on the list. I’ll persevere…

          • David D says:

@Dan, our local Asda here in Scotland had its POS terminals upgraded a couple of weeks back as well. Yet to test it out though. @Crafty, good luck with it as it would likely make our household stop going to Tesco or Morrisons.

  • JanM says:

Quick question: I remember reading that the transfer of Avios from BA to Iberia wasn’t working a while back but that it was fixed? I have tried today (as there is availability on the IB website but not the BA one) but I am unable to transfer the necessary Avios either through the BA or Avios websites? I had to reset my IB password yesterday to log in, so perhaps it is just a question of waiting? Thanks!

    • Pete M says:

I’ve only ever been able to do it via avios.com…

    • mark2 says:

It especially does not work if your Avios account is part of a household account.

      • Rob says:

Works fine if you get an Aer Lingus account and go IB to Lingus at avios.com and then Lingus to BA. Gets around the household limitation.

  • PK says:

Struggling to find where to link the cards on PAW for in-store purchases. I only see an option for linking a bank account and a payment card. Does adding the card as a payment card, make it track for in-store purchases. Can someone help me with this please?
    Thanks.

    • Reney says:

Assuming my launch page is the same as yours:
      – on the front page, on the top right corner, there is help
      – under that it says more, hoover over that
      – a list of options appears, 2nd item on the first column ‘card linked perks’, click that
      – in the top right corner there is a tiny link that says ‘manage cards’ (a bit under more), click that
      – should be obvious from here

    • Ja says:

      What’s PAW please?

  • Simon says:

    I’m after a bit of advice, please…

My family and I were supposed to travel to DXB in the coming weeks, but – perhaps unsurprisingly – BA have cancelled the flights entirely. The flights were originally in First on the way out and Business on the way back for my wife and I with our 5 year old and 18 month old sons. They were booked with Avios and a 2-4-1 voucher.

At this point BA have not rebooked us on any other flights as, I guess, they’re not sure when things will open up again.

I understand that under the Air Passenger Regulations we’re entitled to being re-routed under comparable transport conditions, which in this case would have to be on another airline – although this could also be at a later date at our convenience.

Emirates appear to still be flying to Dubai on a daily basis, so that might be an option, although they don’t appear to have availability on the dates we need. Also, given the quarantine requirements at the moment we’re thinking it might be best to delay our trip, but this is where things start to get more complicated.

I originally thought we’d delay our plans and the trip by a year, which BA may accommodate, although I haven’t checked with them yet. I’m not sure what they’d say given their reward seats and using a 2-4-1 voucher. However, in September our younger son turns 2, so would then need his own seat. He’s currently booked seated on our lap, so we’d presumably need a further Avios award seat availability in First and Business – not an easy ask.

I was wondering about getting BA to move us to Emirates and then talk to them about rescheduling it to April next year. I also wondered if they’d downgrade us from First to Business on the way out and use the reduced fare to cover the cost of an extra Business class seat for our youngest son?

Are there any other options available to us?

    Thanks!

    • Andrew says:

Emirates are able to fly passengers out of England but not into England as no direct flights from red list countries are allowed to arrive with passengers on them – so BA would only able able to book you on to a one-way flight, even if they were to accommodate your request to move to Emirates. You would also be facing a £2725 bill for the group of you for your quarantine on the return to the UK once you managed to find a way back, unless you chose to wait out your 14 days in a non- red list country. So I think asking BA to move you to a flight later in the year might be a better option or just cancelling the whole thing and rethinking when there is more certainty.

      • peter says:

Why’s Dubai even red-listed? Low numbers, half of people are vaccinated there..

    • Yuff says:

You don’t need reward seat availability, I had this issue to dxb on April 9th, one way using 2 241’s in F, imre-booked all 4 of us in October, no reward availability on the flight but 7 cash seats available when I booked. They even pre booked me in 1A

Marriott Datapoint in case useful for others • if you have been expecting your annual choice benefit to come through (in the wake of articles from OMAAT & LL saying that they’re now available) but it hasn’t, then the following link may help — Marriott Assist via Twitter sent it to me and, hey presto, up pops my choice benefit selection 🙂 :-

Received an email from Bendy reconciliations team out of the blue claiming that I haven’t been charged 1.5% for fronted on several transactions and that they are going to debit these amounts shortly. Can they do this retrospectively?

    • Youllnever says:

Have you enabled Curve Fronted in your settings? If it’s been turned off I don’t think it’s reasonable for them to do that – you could argue that you’ve turned the option off, so you shouldn’t be charged for it.

    • the_real_a says:

Curves T&C say (or did when i last read them) that if you revert to a debit card (go back in time) then the fees get refunded.

If curves negligence of not applying fees in good time, caused you to make further transactions then that could form a basis of a complaint. If you have selected “curve fronted” then it would be difficult sell to argue that you were not aware of the charges since you opted in.

Depends how much you want to rock the golden apple cart.

  • FatherOfFour says:

Is an AMEX business card accepted at the same places as an AMEX consumer card? or are there exceptions? (any notable ones?)

  • Robert says:

Got an email from Avios about our cancelled flights at the end of the month, noting we can get a full refund and any vouchers used (3* Lloyds Upgrade Vouchers) will be returned with 31 Oct book (not fly by) date. Win!
