The HfP chat thread – Thursday 18th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have a 241 booking and not expecting to be able to go. The voucher is due to expire 11 Jan 2022. If i cancel for a full refund, would the voucher be extended in the latest 6 month extension or not? The voucher was issued 11 July 2019 so i know already been extended once.

If not i will look to take an FTV instead. But ideally it gets exnteded so i can go away in march *Fingers crossed!

    • Anna says:

If you check your BAEC account you’ll be able to see the expiry date of the 241. If it’s been extended again the new date will already be showing. As far as I know they have only been extended once – it was new vouchers earned which were given an extra 6 months recently.

      • Alex D says:

Ah okay, i didn’t know if the expiry date would update if it’s already tied into a booking.

    • ChrisC says:

Remember an FTV with a wrapped 241 voucher inside is valid for travel until April 2023

Not sure how that compares against the of validity of your extended 241 on its own.

Remember if you cancel you’ll have to pay the cancellation fee but you might prefer to pay that and have everything returned back to you. Of course if BA cancel then there would be no fees to pay.

      • TicknBash says:

We’ve got our 241 booking flight cancelled last month but opted for the FTV so our 241 voucher effectively got extended to 2023 as Chris mentioned above.

We’ve also got the option to cancel the FTV and get a full refund now should we wish.

Of course the downside is having the £££ paid for taxes sitting with BA until and then earning 0.05% p.a on your money !

  • Tiger says:

Please can someone confirm if Boots Advantage points expire, and does an activity on the account resets the expiry like BAEC.

I am currently sitting on £150 worth of points, and might as well spend them on something before they expire.

    • ChrisC says:

3 years rings a bell but check the FAQ on the boots website.

The can’t remember if the app sown the expiry date or not

    • AJA says:

Both earning and spending definitely stops expiry of Boots points. I have a mere £13 on my card and only go into Boots rarely.

    • johnny_c-l says:

T*C<b payout on online orders paid with boots points so when you use them up it's worth spending them online.

    • Nadeshka says:

It’s no activity for two years, i.e. not earning or spending.
You reminded me to check and whilst I used to pop in there all the time when going into the office, I haven’t been into boots in just over a year thanks to lockdown.
      Best get spending myself!

  • SwissJim says:

If Ernie works with a credit card is it always then not a cash transaction? Or do I need to be wary? Just cashed out £50,000 as felt in need of a few extra points whilst the game is still on. Might even be worth signing up for a new credit card when I cash out my children’s as well…

  • Kevin D says:

Hi guys. I never see SAS mentioned much on here. It looks like I’ll be having to fly SAS a bit in the 2nd half of this year. Any tips or advice re. their service, booking, gaining/using points etc??
    Thanks

    • Lady London says:

Would it be a wild idea to get a TAP status match to Gold if you have anything to match to it as SAS is no Star Alliance?

Some of the Scandinavian lounges are decent, but mostly Star Alliance require Gold to access. Unlike OneWorld where Silver is sufficient for this. Then credit to maybe A3 or TK or possibly SQ depending.

  • Benilyn says:

Lufthansa vs Swiss J – London to Dubai
What’s better as a couple (and baby)?

    • Benilyn says:

      Also vs Turkish

    • Tarmohamed says:

Qatar is good with a baby as you’ll get QSuite. Emirates is also good as 2 middle seats together and direct flight. Sorry can’t assist with stated airlines as we prefer EK when spending points and QR for cash

    • BuildBackBetter says:

We were thinking about the same as we have some Krisflyer miles. Prefer Swiss as the seats are better. But in the current environment (atleast until end of 2021), I’d avoid connections in general due to the testing and quarantine rules which change often.

    • Rob says:

Done both in last two years, very little between them. Oddly the fact that both products are now outdated works in your favour as the lack of privacy makes it easier to pass a baby back and forth. Can’t comment on baby baskets etc. If another factor works better (eg connection time, arrival time) then choose on the basis of that.

  • Kevin D says:

Quick question. If we’re doing the “How a couple can earn 178,000 Avios if they are new to Amex” can Person B go – Marriot Bonvoy, then BAPP, then Amex Platinum?? Just asking as the Amex platinum has high annual fee and benefits which will be more beneficial later in the year/next year when aviation opens up. Thanks.

    • Alex says:

Yes, doesn’t matter which way round you do the BAPP and Plat. You just have to do the Marriott card first. Just make sure when you have plat to refer from that card as you earn more points.

    • Chris Heyes says:

Kevin D Amex Platinum high annual fee but get the points and cash out soon as
to get refund. Easy if you can spend necessary amount then cancel your spend on Pat fee could be as low as £100 (2 Months) could be as low as £50 (1 month not as easy but doable) most benefits will last 18 months with correct timings

    • Rob says:

      Yes.

However, there is an updated version of that article which swaps Marriott for Nectar if you search ‘how a couple’.

  • Kevin D says:

Ahh, thanks Chris. Didn’t know that.
    Cheers
