The HfP chat thread – Thursday 18th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

BA Holidays – when upgrading flights to CE using Avios, can you do it online or have to call?

    • Andrew says:

Should be able to do online. But remember not all booking classes of Euro Traveller are upgradable.

      • stevenhp1987 says:

I’ve never been able to upgrade a BA Holiday online for cash or Avios.

        Always had to ring.

      • Optimus Prime says:

I think the classes sold in a BA Holiday are upgradable. I did upgrade to CE a couple years ago but had to call. When trying online it said ‘Unavailable for this booking, please contact your travel agent’. Yes, my travel agent was BA…

    • Jonathan says:

Rob did an article a little while ago talking about the economy booking classes that cannot be upgraded with Avios

  • Ilou says:

How long after a deposit with ERnie that you can cash in ? It showing on my balance but not available for withdrawal

    Thanks

  • Bee says:

Okay so I used to use my curve basic card in the past and had my virgin cc and M&S connected to it and think I used it for spend abroad. I even think it allowed Amex for a short while. Something must have happened and I stopped using it – i think something about charges not sure.

A new card just card in the post and I was reminded about it. What underlying cards can I use for any benefit? What are the benefits of still holding it?

    Thanks

    • The real John says:

      1) Lets you use credit cards where the merchant only accepts debit cards

      2) 0% fx fee (up to a limit) on a credit card which has high rewards but 3% fx if used directly

      3) the intended use case, carry one physical card but able to spend on many different cards

      • Bee says:

Thank you – so will any card can be linked to it, right?
I remember also being able to take cash out, I guess that is what cannot done anymore.

  • Sal says:

Anyone got an airtime referral they would like me to use?

  • TimM says:

I have just had my Heathrow-Manchester evening flight cancelled for… 15th July!! Are BA gradually pulling out of ‘The North’ altogether? The Gatwick link has gone, Cityflyer has gone, the BA lounge will not reopen and now even connecting flights to Heathrow are being cancelled. It appears like an evacuation.

    • Anna says:

There was an earlier mention of a domestic cancellation for July so it looks as though BA are re-jigging the summer schedule. I don’t think the new Gatwick link has been officially pulled, even though apparently it’s not actually re-started yet. Obviously they still have a duty to get you to MAN – I doubt they would cancel the route altogether as they get a fair bit of business from people connecting to LHR for long haul.
It would be great to see CityFlyer back but I’m not holding my breath on that one …

I’ve just had return Manchester – Heathrow flights in September cancelled!

  • Secret Squirrel says:

As an update: my VA 15k code arrived this afternoon after only 1 x day of account switch & all other criteria in place.

  • DJ says:

Re the Virgin Money 15,000 points switch offer, despite the fact that I applied via the app, I just received a wine voucher ..

Did anyone managed to get this sorted? Thanks

    • Rhys says:

Apparently if you tell them you’re teetotal they’ll switch it pretty quickly!

    • Bee says:

Yes I did, I called them on the 9th of March- told them it was the 15k offer I signed up for and was told it would be sorted in a couple of days by a different team who will revoke the wine code and issue the 15k points code.

I heard nothing for about 5 days and contacted them again telling them what I said earlier plus I wouldn’t have signed up for the wine offer as I don’t drink, she said it will be sorted and followed up the next day saying I will soon be contacted.

Then got a call yesterday, the agent read out the code and I entered it and it worked.

So it looks like if the wine offer comes, you need to contact them to rectify it

    • BJ says:

They told me last Thursday that my wine code would be deactivated and a points code manually issued but it would take 2-3 days. Still waiting a week later ; I’ll call again tomorrow.

  • John says:

    Hi
Would anyone have a ‘Octopus Energy’ referral code available that I could use?
