We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone have a WhatsApp no for Virgin Rewards please

  • AnotherUser says:

I’m looking for a cheap-ish IHG points booking in Edinburgh, for a short break when things reopen. The two hotel Indigos, the Crowne Plaza, and the new Voco are all priced within 5000 points of one another. What would you go for?

The location is much of a muchness for me. Haymarket is marginally less convenient, but not much (visiting friends in that area at least once, and there are good places to eat nearby).

    • AnotherUser says:

I’ve got Spire status, if that makes a difference.

    • Sarah says:

I’ve stayed in one of the indigos snd it was nice but I would highly recommend Kimpton Charlotte square if you have enough points and has a pool (or buy some more)

      • AnotherUser says:

Thanks Sarah. I was tempted, but that’s almost twice as much as the Voco (and close to what the Intercontinental goes for when that’s open) and I don’t have the points…

        • TGLoyalty says:

Would say the Kimpton is on par with the IC

        • ChrisC says:

Emyr has a 3 for 2 offer until the end of June that is available at Kimptons which may make the costs work out plus the other benefits he can get – free breakfast and $100 credit

          • Anna says:

+1 on Emyr deals, we booked a superior room at the Kimpton Fitzroy through him, have been upgraded to a junior suite already and of course it’s fully flex.

    • Blindman says:

      Just guessing here:
      But
The Crowne Plaza is more likely to upgrade you to a club Lounge with free breakfast and evening nibbles.
Though with Covid-neither may be an option!

I’ve stayed at the Indigo and it was nice.

      • AnotherUser says:

Thanks. Which Indigo? Good point about CP (which is also the cheapest) but not optimistic about lounges any time soon

        • BJ says:

Indigo York Place is by the start/end of the tram line if that’s of any significance to you. If arriving by air you can use the tram but at a premium most of us here wouldn’t consider worthwhile I think. Pesonally I’d be tempted to go with Vovo given it’s new. They also have potentially most to gain from recognising your spire status too. Write them all first and ask what you can expect in way of status recognition before you mske a decision. Just spell it out to them that this will determine which hotel you will choose.

          • AnotherUser says:

Thanks! I’ve booked at the Indigo, and will change to the Voco if they respond positively to my email about Spire status and upgrades. Decided the CP was a touch too far out the way

    • Peggerz says:

The Crowne Plaza is slightly stuck out on its own, has a reasonable lounge. The Indigo on Princes Street is reportedly a bit run down, the one on York Place is close to the many bars and resto’s (when open) of Broughton Street which are normally really good and also very central. In fact, if coming from the airport the tram stop is just outside. Also a shortish walk from Waverley Station.
The Voco is new and to the West of centre, near the EICC. Personally I’d go for the York Place Indigo.

Late question that someone may know the answer too.

Is it possible to use visa/MasterCard gift cards (the supermarket versions that carry the fee) to pay off your Amex bill?

With the 10% discount at Morrison’s, this represents a feasible and even profitable MS opportunity if possible

    • Connor says:

Do you mean the One4All gift cards? If so no. It does appear as a Visa when you go to pay and shows the 3DS screen but the payment fails.

    • Genghis says:

The ones with the fee (£3.95 on £50 IIRC) from Tesco could be liquidated in multiple places. Not done it in a long time, however. I recommend just giving it a go.

  • Ana says:

How long after getting the amex gold will the offers start showing?
    Thanks!

    • Harry T says:

It usually takes a couple of weeks. Make sure you spend on the card too, that seems to help.

  • YC says:

Picked up from LL/Omaat – Just donated $5 to Lyft (fund to help get people to vaccinations) to get 2,000 Hilton points. Nice way to pick up some cheap points and refresh points expiry, etc

    • Harry T says:

I think points expiry is paused for some time.

      • YC says:

Yeah but want to avoid a dec 31 cliff edge scenario + $5 for 2000 is even better than sale price

  • Harry T says:

Recent data point regarding Amex offers. I had a supp on my gf’s gold card. I’d been spending diversely and fairly heavily on the card for a couple of months, but hadn’t received a single Amex offer. The rest of my own cards and my gf’s cards were bombarded with offers during this period. I did try deleting the card from my online account and readding it, but to no avail. Eventually, I “lost” my card and asked for a replacement. Within a couple of days, I started to receive offers on the replacement supp card.

Just thought this might be helpful for those who have issues getting offers to pop up.

Hat tip to @TGLoyalty for suggesting I lose my card.

    • kitten says:

hmmm…almost like some card number series are not being loaded into the ‘initialize Platinum offers hopper” when the job to set the flags is being done/run

  • Clive says:

I see the Virgin CC points have posted
