The HfP chat thread – Monday 15th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Unable to access my Virgin Flying Club account “We were unable to log you in. Please check your information and try again.”

Website doesn’t seem to be reported down on internet sites, but I don’t have twitter or FB to check further.

Slightly suspicious. Have sent them a text message, no response yet.

Anyone else having trouble, or am I looking at a potential account hack ?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

What happened when you tried to reset your password?

      • WaynedP says:

Error message “We’re sorry, we can’t process this right now. Please try again later”

Probably points to an error on their side if they can’t even give me the option of resetting my password. Maybe THEY’ve been hacked.

Tried clearing my cache and also using completely different browser, both unsuccessful.

    • Youllnever says:

Not working for me either, and I use a password manager so it’s not any typo – something’s definitely wrong with the website.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

My VA app locked up today (again), I simply delete the app & download it again.

      • WaynedP says:

Thanks, that’s reassuring not just me.

Reviewing comments reminded me they were down for several days in May/June last year. Mmmm, no re-booking my cancelled flights tonight then.

        • WaynedP says:

Virgin response via Whatsapp chat confirms Virgin Flying Club system is down, but their team is working on the problem.

  • Munch says:

Ongoing running battle with Air India for a £200 refund for cancelled flights. The last email stated that they sent the credit but have not provided any evidence of the transactions. They have now requested a copy of my credit card statement? I originally booked the flights using Curve. Not sure if I could, how I would send the info from Curve. My underlying card was IHG. Any advice on my next move?

    • Matty says:

Go back to the original transaction, under the particular card that you used within the Curve app. The reversal might be showing (in green) as a credit on your account.

      • Munch says:

Payment still showing in black not green so no refund processed – I’ll contact Curve.

    • Aston100 says:

Sounds like the downsides of Curve when things go awry outweigh any foreign currency fees saved.

  • Sophia says:

Hello, I’m a nurse in intensive care and was wondering if anyone knows of any airlines which give nhs discount ? Any advice would be appreciated

    • Andrew says:

Nothing much out there at the moment. A package offer from Jet2 is as much as I can think of. Make sure you are registered at the normal sites detailed on your staff intranet or HR pages.

Have a decent Amex Card for points.

Also keep an eye on here as there are quite a few NHS staff who post regularly.

    • Harry T says:

Turkish airlines are currently doing a 30% discount for healthcare workers but you need to be part of their Miles&Smiles. I received an email with personalised discount codes. It’s only for bookings up to end of June this year though:

      • Aston100 says:

Isn’t that just thirty percent off the base fare only?
Pretty sure it was when they did a 50% off last year.

  • Talay says:

Family overseas travelling back on Qatar in business class on BA Amex 241 return leg after Qatar goes onto red list.

Option 1 – change to Finnair or JAL

Option 2 – cancel return leg, fly back under own steam. What Avios and taxes would be returned if we were to cancel the return leg, if that is possible ? Thanks.

  • Charlie says:

A great offer has appeared on my Platinum Business amex:

“Spend £1,000 or more in a single transaction, get £150 back

    Backing Businesses Offer”

The offer is in the usual place you need to save offers to card. I’m trying to work out if the spend needs to be with a specific business.

    • Charlie says:

Ok I read through the terms, pretty sure this is for any shop/online business that accepts amex.

    • Rob says:

It’s been there for a while.

Must be £1000 in one transactions, but can be anywhere.

      • Charlie says:

Ah just found your write up from February.

If it’s of interest, I only got the card last week, so I’m very pleased to have landed this.

      • Tarmohamed says:

Can confirm the wife has got this after holding the card for only a week. Only got it for the 100k

  • TicknBash says:

Best value to book for 2 adults and a 3 year old with 241 / reward ?

Or if 2x 241 is used, does anyone know what happens if adult number 3 can’t make the trip ?
