Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A friend of a friend is in hotel quarantine at the moment after arriving from Brazil – they seem to be having daily drinking games in the hotel bar from what I can gather. What a pointless idea the hotel isolation is if they won’t do it properly.

    • Pete M says:

Because the whole thing is a bit of a charade for the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and their readers?

      • Callum says:

It’s not remotely a charade. Do you always take the attitude that if something isn’t done perfectly it’s not worth doing at all?

A minority will always do things wrong (even normally great people – including lots of NHS staff), it doesn’t make it pointless for everyone else to still try and do the right thing.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Well technically as long as it’s the same group every day for 14 days there’ll be nobody infectious at the end of it…

      • CH says:

Assuming that each of them cough/breathe into each other regularly!

      • Callum says:

Not necessarily. Covid doesn’t spread immediately and to everyone you get close to. It could easily spread close to end and either go undetected (assuming they don’t lock down the entire hotel for another 14 days if someone develops it).

    Hi everybody!
I have a flight booked with companion voucher and 50% avios for the 1st of April and it has been cancelled.
Yesterday or the day before I’ve seen in the comment that someone in the same situation was planning to call to move that flight to next year (Easter) as soon as the seats open that mean after the 1st of april. I that ok? Can I wait after the flight date to call and ask to move it?

    • Rob says:

If Avios seats open up, yes.

If you want to fly on a day with no Avios seats, it has to be within 12 months of the day you booked, which will mean November 2021 at the latest.

      • Princess says:

It’s a flight to China, I doubt I will be able to go before next year. My kids are still little so I have a bit of flexibility in leaving few days before school holidays start, but I’ve just looked at the avios pattern and there are no seat available in for months (I was lucky to have 4 first class seats). I don’t mind to wait and see if seats open up during the year if there is no risk I will loose the possibility to move it.

    • SammyJ says:

Exact same happened here. Because they’d cancelled, they let me move it beyond the 50% Avios offer period (June) to July, irrespective of Avios availability, but said that it had to be used within the ticket validity of 12 months (October).
To go beyond October you’d need Avios availability and lose the 50% pricing I was told. I’d say the 50% would be open for debate though as the guy didn’t seem 100% sure.

      • Princess says:

If the risk is to loose the 50% avios I’m wondering if I should move the ticket to the end of 12 months validity and hope they cancel again (as China maybe still be close). Then I’m guessing they will need to move it again?

    • RT says:

      Hi

Did you say your tickets were First class?

I had similar. Same sale but my cancelled flight was in February. I waited until after the cancelled outbound leg had departed but before the (cancelled) return leg. I spoke to 6 executive club agents and none would move it past ticket validity (October 13 2021 in my case), Avios or commercial seats. They stated the best way was to convert to voucher (loses the sale benefits like 50% but extends the date to end of 2022(?). I didn’t want that.
Called You First and they changed them to December, no problem and no question of Avios seats or otherwise.

      • Princess says:

Thank you RT to share!Great!!! I’ll wait then after outbound but before return! Let’s see! I’ll share what will happen

        • Joe says:

Just to add I’ve had the same issue (CW booking) but just called the standard line. Moved to dates outside of 365 day ticket validity and without Avios availability – no questions asked. Didn’t wait until after 1st leg.

Stupid Curve q – Can I pay my wifes VA CC off with my VA cc?

  • TGLoyalty says:

Confirmation from @transportgovuk that #Portugal is being removed from its high-risk red zone list. But Ethiopia, Oman, Qatar and Somalia are being added. The Qatar inclusion wipes out many hub options so effectively adds many more countries to the high-risk list. @ThePCAgency

    • meta says:

Mauritius is also being removed from the high risk red zone list. Yet they have just entered into a lockdown due to high number of cases…

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Yes, but Portugal has extended its ban on flights from the UK until the end of March!

So not that desperate for tourist cash. Leaves a lot of uncertainty for months to come.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Q on Credit availability limits. I have the free IHG card sitting in the drawer doing nothing for the last year. If I were to chop it in would that 7K credit limit give me more chance of increasing my credit limit on a well used CC?

    • Genghis says:

A well used Creation card? No. They don’t really transfer limits from one card to another despite having been good for the credit over say two cards. They don’t really understand credit risk. Other providers, well it depends. It’s v much an art. I don’t really like to have credit cards that I don’t use but each to their own.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

@Genghis: yes, the white IHG card. I already have the Black IHG but was wondering by shutting down the white card maybe VA might increase my credit limit?

    • memesweeper says:

These are strange times. Normally i’m fairly keen on closing credit lines I do not use down. But now I’d not expect any lender to behave rationally, at least for a few months, or perhaps a year… and frankly what better visa/mc is there right now?

      • Jimbob says:

I’ve never got IHG to increase my credit limit, after 3 years of constant use, it’s always a computer says no response.
Mind you, it’s costing them a pretty penny to have me as a customer, given the points it generates

      • Genghis says:

You say that but I got my largest limit ever from Amex a month or so ago. What credit squeeze?

  • Tarmohamed says:

Qatar allows you to change your payment currency on the desktop website. Do note that the offer says only valid on flights departing from UK.

  • Princess says:

Sharing a little win thank you to Kitten and Charlieface advice a month or so ago . I had a Ryanair flight cancelled, flight rebooked next day. Their system block any request of reimbursement for expenses. Ryanair also broke my bag.
At the end Amex platinum insurance paid back my expenses with no excess and asked me to submit a different claim for the bag and they reimbursed the full price minus 20% and excess, still plenty left to repair it.

  • Peter K says:

Anyone else finding the Amazon MasterCard app is down?

    • Bobri says:

      Yes it’s down

    • Aston100 says:

Peter, is there any way to use that card in ways that would do this site proud?
Never understood the point of it, other than the occasional sign up bonus.

      • Peter K says:

Just as part of something that Dougal, Brian, Zebedee and co would enjoy.

      • lumma says:

It’s a reasonable return if you have a high spend on Amazon and use Prime
