The HfP chat thread – Monday 15th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

We have made some changes this morning to how the home page displays on 12 to 13 inch laptop screens, in line with the changes last week to 10-11 inch screens. If you notice anything odd, please let us know.

If you don’t notice any change, don’t worry. The change is driven by screen resolution so even if you have a 12-13 inch screen it is possible it is very high res (or very low res) and so not impacted.

    • Chas says:

Yes – I’ve refreshed my page, and the text of all the comments appears to be bold. Using Safari on a 15-inch MacBook Pro.

      • Chas says:

Although oddly not on the comments of today’s other articles – just the chat thread.

      • Rhys says:

        We didn’t touch the comments!

        • Chas says:

I’m only saying what I see! Perhaps I made some fat-fingered alteration via some unknown keyboard shortcut, but I can’t understand why that wouldn’t make the same change on the other articles.

        • Rob says:

Nothing should have changed on a 15 inch display.

Marriott Free Night Cert: Targeted offer

Received an offer for free night cert, 1st cert after 1st Stay, 2nd cert after 2nd stay. Complete by 30th June 2021.

Free nights are valid for redemptions up to 35,000 points/night in value.

Any ideas for cheap matress run night(s) in the South East with Marriott?

    • Rob says:

      Moxy Slough is around £40

Courtyard LHR and LCY, both due to open imminently, should be cheap.

      • MilesOnPoint says:

Thanks Rob, sounds like a good shout. Do you think it’s worth a matress run at those prices? (Would you if you had the offer?)

Conscious that 35K cap on the Certs excludes most aspirational redemptions in the UK and they are only valid 6 months from issue

        • Rob says:

If I had a firm plan to use it I might, but arguably rates are going to be weak anyway for 6 months. No guarantee I’d make a big enough profit to make it worthwhile.

    • Venturelog says:

I’ve got it as well. Worth a go I think.

      • MilesOnPoint says:

Yeah, you’re probably right. Free parking at the Moxy Slough to apparently. Might even stay there the night before my redemption at the Langley haha (11mins drive between them)

    • David says:

      I’ve got earn 12k:
      stay once for 4.5k,
      second stay for 7.5k

  • Pete M says:

Not the newest of articles, but I thought it may provide some amusement on this grey afternoon! https://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/business/pound-drops-to-1-nectar-point-20190909188853. Perhaps even more relevant to this crowd now than when it was written! 🙂

    • Lady London says:

Thank you @Pete M for the joy of rediscovering that site 🙂

  • John says:

Am I correct in thinking that Morrisons gift cards can be used as payment for the purchase of other (e.g. M&S) gift cards in Morrisons on the self service checkouts?

  • MattB says:

Just seen your tweet on the park plaza offer, any thoughts on which hotel on the list is the better choice?

    • Rob says:

County Hall is the best location, Riverbank has bigger rooms in general IIRC, Waterloo is the newest! Personally I like County Hall because you step out of the door and you see Big Ben etc across the river. Waterloo underground is also only seconds away.

(£89 flash sale for the benefit of other readers who missed the tweet – click here for info).

      • Aston100 says:

And then you immediately run into millions of tourists and their kids screaming to go and see Shrek.

      • MattB says:

Thanjs just remembered I stayed at the Waterloo hotel just before lockdown last year, it was very nice but a bit of a walk from the station and my room overlooked the railway lines.

  • Nigel W says:

If anyone has the Clos19 offer on the Amex, there is 15% discount for orders over £150 if you put ‘BDAY15’ as a discount code.

just had a cancellation on a mainstream holiday route from Easyjet.

It’s for Friday 27th May which is a major UK Public Holiday weekend.

What do Easyjet know that I don’t?

    • Andrew says:

That the government’s review to be published mid-April, will as expedited, push out the return to international travel date to the summer rather than 17 May which many people seem to be clutching onto based on nothing.

    • ChrisC says:

Could be something at the destination country (whihc you don’t state) that is affecting their decision making?
