Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Sunday 14th March

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What is this Airtime that everyone is talking about? I feel I have missed something.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      Look up airtime rewards

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Morrison’s aren’t currently on there for me at least anyway…

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        Strange as most got 10%

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Morjssons not even ‘coming soon’ – Waitrose are coming soon apparently as they have been for months.

Morissons were briefly back soon for a month or so but now vanished

  • Anuj says:

Any London hotel deals post lockdown? The only ones I’ve found is the travelzoo vouchers.

    • Rob says:

The ones we see, we cover, but there isn’t much. I doubt we’ll see much until May when there is more certainty.

    • Aston100 says:

Prices seem very high in and around may half term.
Checking IHG, there are no good cash prices. Dynamic points pricing (as noted by Harry T the other day) seems to be (more or less) in line with cash prices now.

      • Anna says:

Emyr got me a good deal on the Kimpton Fitzroy, they are still doing the 3 for 2 offer but if you book through Emyr they don’t take the first night deposit they want for booking direct. We’ve been upgraded to a junior suite as well!

        • Anuj says:

Thank you for reminding me about Emyr. Will send off an email to him.

  • Matt says:

Any idea on the required gap between having closed a Barclays account and being eligible to sign up for a Premier account? Don’t want to waste a hard credit search if it’s unlikely to be successful.

    • Patrick Cold says:

I closed my Premier Account and switched to Virgin; it was a monumental error on my part. The Virgin experience was an absolute shambles. I went into my Barclays branch and switched back to Barclays Premier on the spot.

      • Patrick Cold says:

Apologies. I`ve re-read your question and my response is unhelpful!

  • Shaz says:

IHG buy points 100% bonus available until March 16th.

  • Steve says:

Anytime have a Nectar Amex referral code (seems can’t refer from BAPP to Nectar)?

    • Genghis says:

Nectar is now outside the referral scheme, it seems. For now anyway. HfP may still get their affiliate link revenue?

      • Steve says:

Per Rob’s “How a couple can earn 186,875…” article seemed to suggest Nectar to Nectar error was still open (step 2)?

        • Rob says:

As it happens Amex has just booked a sponsored article on refer a friend so we may get to the bottom of this.

      • Rob says:

They are still paying us 🙂

    • Craig says:

Well that’s a pain, I’ll have to rethink my referral strategy for Mrs S!

    • TGLoyalty says:

You can’t even refer from nectar to nectar at the moment.

Amex believe it’s an IT issue as there’s no comma to say it can’t be referred.

    • Steve says:

Anyone know if Amex do a name and address check on the linked Nectar? Would rather not open multiple Nectars and just route Amex earnings into a single (existing) Nectar account, if possible?

      • Rob says:

They never used to – Nectar and Radisson used to be the only partners who did no name checks at all. This may have changed of course.

        • Steve says:

Thanks, will report back if they reject the card number entered 👍

  • Jimbob says:

Any heads up when the next buy Avios bonus promotion might be?

  • Youngtraveller says:

Not sure if covered or will be covered but amex has an offer from Qatar (spend 500, get back 100) on my plat+gold supp and ubereats (get 10%) only on free rewards.
