Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 13th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

It should be technically easy to book beyond beyond 12 months for BA as their own systems allow it. They just need to follow the protocol that all other reputable airlines do. Yet they choose to play games and tricks with customers and will continue to do so until they start losing money. If it matters to you, then fight for it via legal routes.

    • JLNF says:

Thanks both. I will wait and see, and also have enough avios in the kitty to book at midnight/1am if it does not work out (eg for a day or two later).

I bought a (hotline, ex-staff) JNB return in the autumn sale for this April during the sale last year. Both sectors cancelled. Great price at just over £1300, with about £250 worth of Avios.
I wanted to switch to my regular 4 or 5 week trip next Jan/Feb where I do the first half in Stellenbosch area with wife, then she flies home I fly up to Joburg to meet friends out from Europe for golf. I wondered whether it would be possible to switch outbound to CPT (expecting a huge price increase so unlikely), and as mentioned here, agent said ticket wasn’t valid beyond October so my only options were a refund or voucher.
I tried online and the switch to next year worked, this morning I phoned again, agent switched the outbound as requested to CPT for £130, great result as we were looking at my wife having to route LHR-JNB-CPT, return CPT-LHR which was a faff and expensive as I would need to buy another ticket JNB-CPT for myself, and wife’s ticket was an extra £150.
Makes a nice change when it all works!

Is it? OMG. I didn’t know. Thanks for letting me know. I did wonder which website I’d blundered across.

Although, I didn’t realise it included the word ‘bloody’…..

      • Aston100 says:

I wish the comments section would go back to being only about miles and points.
Daily Mail, Brexit, Covid Denial and all the other crap just brings out the worst in people.

That’s of course apart from TGL Loyaltys incredibly generous gesture to forego his vaccine earlier today so one of his European cousins could benefit?

        • BJ says:

Believe it or not but from 2012-16 it was a rather genteel place, reminiscent of Last of the Summer Wine, to while away many lazy hours … then Adam ate the apple!

          • Chris Heyes says:

BJ But them days are long gone, now your bendying round the curve, with a beardy seagull saying i got mine, i haven’t got mine, mine arrived, mine didn’t, yours should or shouldn’t , will it wont it maybe, maybe not , or of course what do you think
it may happen or then again it may not happen
That’s if you got yours lol

          • Grant says:

Glad to see the lol is back, Chris. Beginning to think you’d actually stopped laughing.

    • Mouse says:

Sad to read so many people aren’t enjoying the comments. I have been enjoying their sheer eclecticness for the last eight or nine years and hope they never change!

What silly person reads a newspaper that was pro-nazi back in the day, and hasn’t budged much since?! Find a GOOD news source.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Who cares what the Daily Fail print anymore. They are full of click bait headlines these days.

  • Peter K says:

Actually wrong. Turn based RPGs are a fave of mine 🙂

Oops. The comment I was responding to got deleted as I wrote it seems, leaving my post dangling in a strange way.

And now you’ve revealed your inner nerd to the world!

Post on FT suggesting BA ramping up flights in May. A380 back for MIA, SFO and LAX.
