We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

BAEC status extension question. I note that an extension has been actioned within given parameters. My year end is 8th May 2021 and am currently silver. Confused as to whether folks in my position will have status extended or not. Thanks.

  • George K says:

I’m potentially left holding a bag of Etihad miles that I was saving for a Residence redemption, but it now looks like the A380 is out for good. Miles won’t expire for another couple of years, but was wondering if there’s anything I could be looking forward to already…

    *sigh*

    • meta says:

If you have large balance, the best bet would be to use it on partner airlines. Etihad won’t be releasing new seats any time soon though they might have something in store on A350, but I doubt anything as exciting as Residence or F apartment.

I had F Apartment booking cancelled, so I have decided to use the remaining miles on partner awards. Beware also that Etihad Guest is now dynamic pricing based and the award seats are now too costly.

      • George K says:

Thanks for this. It’s around 80k, which was supposed to be just about enough for a one-way first class redemption. Good tip on the dynamic pricing – I can’t make heads or tails on the booking system. It throws pricing for 40k+ but once I click through it goes to 120k, then on payment it wants 79k… I need to get my head around this.

    • Lee says:

Worst case would be convert them into cash card

      • meta says:

Terrible value for me as I transferred some Amex MR for the booking.

      • Rob says:

American Airlines is a partner of course

        • George K says:

Good tip – thanks. I may bite the bullet and go for a redemption on the 787, but wanted to see if that was still the better avenue to pursue…

  • Andrew says:

Thanks @Josh and @LadyLondon for replies to my post (13:27 yesterday).

The age-old advice of HUACA has worked.

For my booking at least, the website is still blocking rebooking to flights over Christmas (“No flights available on this date”) but the BA call centre has managed to re-book onto the dates I wanted (18 Dec) with no issues. Hurrah!

@LadyLondon – it is a pretty poor show that the rebooking site doesn’t seem to want to allow rebooking online over the Christmas period (the call centre agent yesterday said – in summary – that the ticket had expired [12 months from issuance] and that the only way to rebook would be online “if the system lets you” because her computer wouldn’t do it). I did point out that under EU261 and equivalent UK legislation, I had a right to rebooking to a date of my choice/at my convenience and that BA wasn’t fulfilling its legal duties… she went to find a manager but after 10 minutes on hold I had to do some work, hence trying again today.

I know, this has probably been answered before …
I have 50% Avios booking for LHR-LAX using 241 in Business for May. BA have cancelled outbound. I would like to go in October (if possible). If (and it is a big IF) I can move the flights, what is my position if the US is still not open for tourists by then? Can I then choose to cancel (and pay a fee) or am I risking losing the Avios, 241 and the cash? Thanks again in advance to you smarter (than me) people out there in HFPland. Is there a simple way to find out the position other than asking you guys?

    • Anna says:

It would still be an avios booking and you would still be able to cancel it under the Ts and Cs for the £35 pp fee.

    • The real John says:

You can also FTV it and use the value of the avios and money you’ve paid for a new 241 booking in the next 2 years, but you would have to pay any extra avios and fees, or if going somewhere cheaper you could get a refund (as another voucher, or for small amounts, back to your card).

You can also get help and advice on flyertalk’s BA forum.

    • Louise K says:

I had my April flights to LAX cancelled yesterday and it would let me me re-book October dates.

  • MiddleEngland says:

It looks like IHG has a 100% buy points bonus running until 16 March.

  • Jerry says:

Seem to be lots of BA cancellations this week. Our May LHR-HND 50% 241 cancelled and shifted to next day. Called to check options and told can move to any available J seats on BA flight until October 2021 when 12 month ticketing window closes. After that flight will reprice at 100% avios. Is this correct? Ideally would shift to next Spring 2022 but could take Sept 2021 and see what happens with travel rules. Thinking may as well preserve 50% avios even if it later costs £35pp to cancel unless BA beat us to it. Any advice gratefully received.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

You might not find any redemption availability for spring 2022 by then.

      • Jerry says:

Very true – but if BA cancel the rebooked September flights they would have to rebook them.

Redemption options are going to be a big problem from 2022 with loads of extended 241s, Nectar, pent up demand etc, etc. Collecting 241s and avios has reduced impetus with so many in the bank and so few opportunities on the horizon (no F, smaller fleets, fewer avios seats). We’ve never held so many 241s.

        • Gavin says:

I think the original ticketing date limit will remain in place. So, if you rebook to September and they are subsequently cancelled, you will still be limited to booking something up until October.

        • BuildBackBetter says:

Doubt Sep would be cancelled. Lot of freight demand still going on and with vaccines, there could be limited passenger demand, enough for a flight.
With business demand low, (companies questioning business travel), it leaves bigger flights and more frequency for leisure routes. See the link posted in the other page. Won’t be surprised if BA flies an A350 or 777 to Greece in summer.

  • Harry T says:

Has anyone managed to stack Virgin flying club, airtime rewards and PAW at Morrison’s, or do they cancel each other out?

I have 6 points per pound with VFC, 10% back with airtime rewards, and 10 Wow points per pound with PAW. Would be a nice stack but if it won’t work, I’ll stick with 10% off with Amex plus the six BFC points per pound.

    • Ste Cox says:

I was going to try this later but when i just checked Virgin flying club the morrisons offer isnt there anymore although when i checked this morning it was saying 8 points per £

    • 747_Brat says:

@Harry: Just noted that Natwest offer is for ‘Click & Collect’ only, so don’t think it will stack up for in-store purchases. Sorry didn’t know that earlier.

Has anyone tried to use the Natwest offer for instore purchases with some joy?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

@Harry T: how do you get 6 x VFC miles on this purchase? I’ve got 10% CB from them.

  • Dan says:

    General question about Curve.

If the underlying card charges fees (cash advance etc.) for any transactions, shopuld they show up instantly along with transactions. So if these transactions are in the app, without the fee, can I assume that I’m all clear in terms of the additional interest/charges?

Or are there some CC providers/banks that charge these fees once the statement is billed?
