The HfP chat thread – Thursday 11th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’m having a bit of a shitshow with Curve. On top of it being rejected for everything everywhere, I’ve now noticed two rejected transactions have been charged to the underlying card.
When I try and send a message via Report A Problem—->Contact Us via the app, it just keeps saying message cannot be sent.

I’m wondering whether they are in financial difficulty.

    • LST says:

I know it’s a long shot, but is there any idea of when a new Hilton card might come to the market?
      Thanks

      LST

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Never.

      • Rob says:

Not heard anything from them for a year now.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

I wouldn’t hold your breath – it’s not really obvious who would want the business even if Hilton did put the contract out to tender.

    • Dan says:

I emailed them yesterday (support at imaginecurve dot com). It was sorted in about an hour.

    • Ali M says:

I have a transaction that went through on curve but didnt appear with nsandi – have queried it. no response as yet but they are really good with emails generally x

    • Anna says:

Seriously, do you not read any of the comments here?

    • DarrenS says:

Curve all back to normal for me. Previously declined transaction now going through.

    • Jonathan says:

When there’s a problem with curve transactions it’s not worth trying to engage with their CS until at least a week down the line as it invariably sorts itself out on its own. Financial institutions, unsurprisingly, have fairly sophisticated systems for reconciling transactions.

  • Jimmy says:

    Good Morning,

What time frame are reward fights released?
Im looking to book to the Maldives in November 2022 when are the flights for this released this year?
    Cheers

    • David B says:

They release a year in advance, so November 2021.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

355 days at midnight GMT, to be precise

        • Jimmy says:

Whats the best way to secure these flights at midnight as I dont always show on the website??

          • Rhys says:

Call the US phone line. Did this myself on Monday – easy

          • Jimmy says:

Any chance you can point me in the direction of the number??

Thank you very much as well!

          • Rhys says:

            +1 877 767 7970 – I called at 11:45 and got through in time, just

          • Jonathan says:

They don’t always appear on the website as routes like this are incredibly popular so people are calling at midnight on day of release to secure them. You need to Google this as you need your ducks in order to stand a chance. Basically need to call the right number at the right time & have all the information ready to feed them.

  • M says:

Currently, I have an AMEX Platinum, fiancee has a standard BA Amex card (downgraded following 241 on Premium, held as need to hold a BA card for the voucher). We both individually have the free Virgin Mastercard.

Trying to work the best strategy for £25k+ of wedding spend in the next few months, part of which (~50%) can be on an Amex. Any thoughts on best strategy?

    • Benilyn says:

Any amex works, doesn’t need to be BA.
If your partner has not had a MR Amex, you could sign up to the BA Plat Business card special offer, 10k spend and get 100k bonus. To minimise costs, try spend it asap and know what you want to move your points to. Then you can transfer out the points and cancel the card and get pro rata refund. IMO that feels like the best use, ideally line up the purchases in a short period if possible (not a big deal if you are not bothered by the annual fee)

      • Benilyn says:

Also obviously get her to sign up with your referral link

As for the non-Amex spend… you have HSBC Credit Cards (free/paid), IHG Free card or Virgin. Kind of depends what you are targeting… me personally struggling to spend Avios so hotels, which you can achieve via IHG, or Virgin and convert to Hilton.

    • Harry T says:

Get a Gold card and spend 15k on it. Will yield 15,000 points for the base spend and an extra 10,000 for hitting the yearly spend of 15k. You won’t get a better return on your Amex spend unless one of you is eligible for a bonus. Is your fiancée eligible for bonuses on membership rewards cards? If so, you could get her to take out a platinum or gold card. 4k spend on a platinum would yield an extra 35k or so for the bonus, if they are eligible. So for 19k spend on Amex, you could get a decent haul. We need to know more about your fiancee’s card history though.

Btw you do not need a BA card to use a voucher. If you sceptical, I can tell you that I have personally redeemed a 241 after cancelling the BA card.

  • Cheap Charlie says:

I originally sign up for the BA data breach way back in 2018, however after receiving the initial letter and T&C’s – that you would be liable for court costs etc
I decided to not proceed as the stipulation of the sign up was they needed confirmation of address and ID etc, which i never provided.
Yesterday i received a email from a different law firm (and after checking my spam folder there were actually quite a few emails including a law firm change) noting the possible costs that i am liable.
Does anyone know have any experience on this?
    much obliged

    • @mkcol says:

Are you *certain* these are legit emails? There has been a lot of scam emails of this sort.

    • Pete M says:

Did you actually read the email and the bit about insurance against paying those costs?

    • Tyler Durden says:

      #karma

    • Jay says:

Did you formally cancel the request to be part of the claim within 14 days of signing up? If not, you are liable for a proportion if costs incurred to date. It will be in the T&C’s and is standard no win no fee protocol. The devil is in the details of the terms you agreed to. Assuming they have an underwriter for the costs then best bet is go along with claim and no liability to costs. Cancel now and you qill face coats.

  • David says:

Possibly a niche question but you never know.

I have 3 x Spend £100 get £20 back at Lululemon across Amex cards.

Does anyone know if their gift cards process under LLL? The website for gift cards is lululemon.cashstar so I’m thinking most likely not…

    • Harry T says:

I reckon they won’t trigger if it’s not the actual Lululemon website or instore purchases. You could always buy items and return them in exchange for gift cards.

    • Harry T says:

I am personally doing my best to use the five Amex offers I have for Lululemon.

Btw if you don’t know about it, We Made Too Much section is the best place to get an extra discount. If you’re ever shopping in person, the Edinburgh store has the best WMTM section in the UK (a whole basement level that is more discounted than the London shops).

      • Phil says:

I walk past that store every week and never knew they had a discount basement. Lives and Learns.

      • David says:

Thanks Harry, yes I tend to make best use of the We Made Too Much section!

Also enjoyed shopping in their Bicester Outlet store last year combined with other sales and the Amex offer at the time.

    • Bobri says:

Buy stuff at the very end of the promo, then either return stuff in store and ask for a refund on a gift card or chat with their CS before returning an online order by post -they will sort you out

  • BH says:

Has anyone who uses Reward Flight Finder been having difficulty with alerts? I’m on their Gold plan and just seem to be getting random emails in the mid afternoon – and the latest one was several days ago so it’s well out-of-date.

Their support is atrociously slow and has not responded to my last requests for help in over 24h.

  • Ollie says:

Did anyone watch “Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport” on ITV last night?
Was a nice bit of light entertainment and a reminder of what we’re missing at the moment. Only 20 minutes long though.
Was keeping an eye out for seeing myself on there as I was travelling during the filming period!

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

FYI for those who have the Craft Gin Club Spend 40 get 20 Amex offer, today only a website that rhymes with bidflow is offering a 20% rebate on purchases from their shop (i.e. not the subscription boxes)

    • JD says:

Nice one Andrew, just made the most of this! Cheers

    • Jonathan says:

Their shop is very overpriced but 20% plus £20 is a decent deal.

They’re obviously quite switched on though as I looked at using the Amex offer (£20 CB with £40 spend) on their boxes when they had an offer code for a free extra bottle of gin & the code also discounted the box 1p to £39.99!

    • Alan says:

      Bidflow? Any more clues.
