The HfP chat thread – Thursday 11th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Sainsbury’s credit card 10000 Nectar bonus, how quickly does this post please? I’ve spent the £400 between the store and petrol but it isn’t on this months statement?

    • BJ says:

My experience with earlier variants of the card were that the points did not post until aftee the two months were over regardless of meeting the spend target quickly. One time they didn’t post at all and I had to call the supermarket, not the bank or Nectar, to get them added.

Anyone else having trouble getting into BA. I changed my password last week after the SITA email but I am once again getting the “your details aren’t recognised” message.

    • BJ says:

Changed passwords worked fine for me on the app this morning.

      • AJA says:

+1 Same as BJ. No problem for me. Able to log in to BAEC on the app with new password this morning.

B*****r. Sounds like another call to BA CS for me this morning. Thanks though guys.

I’m hoping the collective wisdom can help… I need to get 2 laptop parts which are coming from Sweden to the UK. Each part is £30 including delivery. The seller says they hope to ship sometime in April due to HMRC/customs registration delays. Has anyone used a freight forwarding company or similar I could use to work around this delay?

    • JDB says:

We have been trying various different options sending/receiving packages to/from EU and the post is by far the simplest and quick. You will however have to pay £8 Royal Mail handling fee (per package) when it arrives on top of whatever tax/duty might be payable. This is less than many couriers charge.

      • lost confused says:

Thanks JDB. I’d be ok with the £8 handling fee and charges (just need the bits rather than buying a new laptop), but the shop are not willing/able to send it until they are registered. So I guess my only options are waiting, buying from china (slow) or finding someone in the EU to forward it on. I wonder if there is an advantage in splitting into 2 orders?

      • @mkcol says:

You surely only need to pay that if the items are above £135 value?
The rules have been changed post-Brexit.

        • lost confused says:

@mkcol I believe you are correct, but so far I’ve not worked out what happens if I get a friend in Germany or Norway to receive and then mail it onto me (either a £30 package value or a £60 package). Would there be any charges if it’s less than £39 (this is the “gift allowance) and the correct forms are completed…
It appears that it’s now much easier to buy low value goods from everywhere else in the world, but unfortunately the parts I want are only readily in the EU.

Someone mentioned that there was some cheap prices on BA Avis yesterday.

Can I confirm the URL for this would be: https://www.carhire-ba.com/

    Thanks

    HSBC Premier:

Does anyone know if one could hold the UK Premier Credit Card (free, blue) and the Expat World Elite card at the same time? Thanks

I would like to keep the extended warranty benefit with the UK Premier card, but at the same time, getting a WE card for the bonus points.

Looking at the Expat website, the brochure states that the credit cards are provided by HSBC UK, and their customer services couldn’t tell me if I’ll get the bonus points if I apply for the WE card with Expat.

  • @mkcol says:

Haven’t been able to pay Amex using my metal Curve with any of the usual cards backing it.
Is this new & normal? I happen to have had my Curve reissued recently which starts 537591, unsure if that’s different from the previous.

    Hey all,

I’m 100 points away from reaching BA Silver for the first time ever, but my collection date ends 08 Apr 2021.

Is there any way I can generate these 100 points somehow? Really want to reach this particularly to match with virgin next year.

    Thanks

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Assuming that the country opens up as planned (and you are in England), two domestic round trips, at least one of which in business (and avoiding the cheapest economy fare buckets) , would do it.

    • Jonathan says:

100 TP’s will cost you quite a lot of cash at the moment. You’re looking at a domestic return CE plus an economy return not in the cheapest fare buckets. Essentially a minimum of £400. How often are you expecting to fly BA in the next year? If it’s just short haul you could get the Silver benefits by just buying CE which would probably cost you less than £400 extra for 2 returns. Or just wait till your new TP year & pick up a couple of cheaper TP run to somewhere interesting like Athens or Catania & get silver for nearly 2 years.

To get a Virgin status match moving forward you need to show a flying history with BA that would be adequate to earn Silver with Virgin. That is essentially a couple of longhaul W/J returns a year on Virgin routes. If you had that you’d be Silver with BA already!

Don’t let the status tail wag the flying dog.
