We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Baji Nahid says:

So, did anyone watch the Harry and Meghan Interview? (if BA and VS are reading this, any cheap tickets to the US post covid would be good promo right now 😉

    • BJ says:

Slow might at the office Baji?

      • Baji Nahid says:

Oh BJ. Its always a slow night in our parts of town 😉

    • DT says:

People don’t actually waste their time watching things like this do they??

    • Chris Heyes says:

Baji Nahid What a comment Why would anyone want to watch Harry and Meghan full stop

      • Callum says:

Because they’re interested in how the secretive and obscenely wealthy institution that is ruling their country without democratic mandate is functioning?

It’s quite an amusing statement to make though given millions would say exactly the same about our habits of regularly posting comments on a frequent flyer blog!

    • George1976 says:

No. I have a life and couldn’t care either way about Harry, Meghan or the royal family’s personal matters.

    • Dave says:

Didn’t BA have some offer for anyone named Megan at the time of their wedding?
That was before her popularity plummeted. I doubt any UK company would want to be associated with her these days.

    • Mo says:

I did not watch it but reading a little into it, some of the allegations of racism not only from media etc but a member of the family are hardly surprising.

Somewhat related, there was also an interesting article recently in The Guardian about the number of laws the royals have vetted, it is much more than people think and they are very varied. I’ll link it in a separate comment if allowed

  • Anna says:

More to the point, did anyone watch McDonald & Dodds (quite wickedly funny on certain aspects of policing)? Among other things it seemed to be a 2-hour advert for the Bath Indigo, though I’m not sure it was terribly wise of the hotel to allow its clientele to be portrayed as adulterous homicidal binge-drinkers!

    • Nick says:

I did watch it Anna. Didn’t realise the Indigo was a real hotel with that name. Presumably they are trying to attract the hen night binge drink market to benefit from the alcohol sales – otherwise why let the name be used. Made a mental note to avoid if I’m ever staying in Bath!

      • Anna says:

It’s reported to be very nice indeed and has been mentioned very favourably on this site! I did have a points booking for the early May bank holiday (prices are often around £300 pn) but obviously that’s a non-starter now.
Are you ex-murder squad Nick? I think we’ve all worked for a Chief Super like that 🤣

    • Andrew says:

      Oh, it’s a crime drama!

I was thinking it was a Patullo style visit to Bath by a couple of the shadow cabinet.

It’s got Robert “GBH” Lindsay in it, so it must be good.

      • Anna says:

It’s more as though Jane Austen wrote Death in Paradise than a crime drama. The most fun is spotting which guests stars appear each week.

        • Rupert says:

From my experience, there was only one true life police drama TV series with uncanny similarities to policing the valleys of Wales. You guessed it, Miami Vice.

      • Tiff says:

He’ll always be Robert “Citizen Smith” Lindsay to me.

  • BJ says:

Virgin Red Spin to win Nothing appears to have ended.

    • SwissJim says:

      Did anyone win anything? 🤣

    • Peter K says:

Yesterday was the last day to spin. Winner drawn within 7 days then has 2 days to confirm the win or another winner will be drawn.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Shame, it wasn’t at all a waste of my time each morning and the design making it look like a 50% chance of winning wasn’t at all irritating 😠

    • Rob says:

      You might win 1m yet!

  • Matthew says:

Still having issues getting offers to appear on newish (2 month old) PRG supp card. Amex unwilling to help. Tried removing and adding back to online account but no luck. Anyone managed to sort this successfully? Seen a few posts over last few months with similar issues so hoping people have managed to resolve. Thanks.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

There’s no solution, it is by design. Either not enough spend to be included in any of the filters “show offer to customers of type x who have spent in category y” or simply aren’t any yet, or in some cases (me included) you’ve previously upset them in some way and are blanket excluded.

In case of the latter, either CS are in the dark or deliberately pretend to be, either way they’ll not help

    • Ali M says:

mine loaded within 10 days of a new BAPP

    • Harry T says:

It perplexes me when this happens on supp cards that get a lot of spend, especially when I have other supps with less spend that get lots of offers. I’m currently having the same situation with my supp on the gf’s account. I’ve tried deleting the card and readding to my online account but no joy so far. May have to “lose my card”. It’s worth noting I’ve done nothing to annoy Amex and my multiple other cards and supps have plenty of offers, despite most current spend going on this gold supp.

      • Matthew says:

Ditto. I put about 3x more on the supp than my wife does. Got dormant cards with offers all the time but this one nothing. Will just have to wait I guess. Never had this in over 12yrs being with Amex so it is odd…

  • Mycity says:

Sorry I wonder if anyone can help. Our Global Entry memberships run out very soon, im told two stories to renew. One is you need to renew with the UK first then renew with the US, in fact there is a UK GOV link to renew, secondly Im told you just renew straight with the US.
Has anyone renewed recently and what procedure did you need to go through? Thanks

    • ChrisC says:

You need to get a new Home Office code. You can’t renew GE without it.

That’s what someone posted on V-Flyer in the last week or so. The DHS were quite clear about the need for the HO code.

Don’t hold off renewal as if you apply whilst your GE is still active they’ll still let you use it until they have processed your application.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Similar vein, l waited a year but finally had my GE conditionally approved and needed to book an interview appointment. In Feb last year.

Will that have expired despite COVID? Anyone know?

  • S879 says:

Try to use the 500 virgin red points offer to order something from ebay. I already have the vr app but keeps sending me to vr website which also shows no option to click through to eBay when I go into the ‘earn’ option. Could someone help re where I need to click?

  • BJ says:

Just completed my switch to Virgin Money, how long after that are people waiting for their 15k points?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

@BJ – you have set up 2 x DD & the switch shows completed & have £1000 in the savings account connected?
I’m still awaiting to see my 2 x DD & bank switch completed.

      • BJ says:

Yes, I both set up and transferred two with the switch. Everything showing. I also made a point of transferring £1000 into the savings account from both the VM CA and an external account to be on the safe side. I’m expecting hassle though as I git an email last week that I would be enjoying my wine soon.

      • r* says:

Where do you check for the switch being completed?

Presumably the dd just need to show up onbthe acct rather than anything actually be taken? Ive yet to get any emails from them referencing points or wine.

        • BJ says:

Most banks send a letter or email when a switch has been completed. I was just going on transfer of funds and DD showing up on my VM account this morning. As long as DD are active they are ok. This does not mean they have to have paid out already AFAIK. I’pidt a comment onbtge day I receive email to claim my points.

    • Grant says:

I think it said you’d get the code within 14 days didn’t it? I took that to mean 14 days after the later of the two DDs was debited from my account when setting up a reminder to check.

      • BJ says:

Yes, that is my understanding except I took it as completion of switch not DD payments. Getting the two DD to pay out within a month of signing up could be a bit tricky in some cases. To date, all switching incentives I have received were based on switch completion date

    • Joe says:

I completed all the requirements 10 days ago – so should have the code by the end of the week…. we shall see!

      • BJ says:

Cheers Joe, please post on the daily chat article when it arrives.

  • Michael C says:

On (yesterday’s) theme of half term, we have GBP 60 X 3 flights reserved for Nice, from the last sale, so no biggif if vouchered. Just been shuffled a bit by a one-day cancellation (trimming down from 5 to 3 or something, I guess). We’ll have been vaccinated twice by then, but who knows what UK will be requiring on return.
Still, it’s all getting that bit more feasible!

    • Andrew says:

Is France planning to open its borders by May? (Assuming you’re referring to that half term and not October?)

      • Michael C says:

Who knows! Currently allowing residents to visit EU with a PCR on return. Lots of articles in the Spanish press of packed “party planes” arriving from France for a w/end of bars and restaurants!

        • Andrew says:

But that’s quite different to France allowing in non-EU or French residents from a non-EU country.

        • Yuff says:

In Mallorca they need a negative PCR test to enter, some local Spanish areas are exempt if cases are below 150/100k but that is being reduced to 100/100k and they are trying to get it down further to 50/100k.
However the Balearics are keen for vaccinated uk citizens post 17th May

    • Olly says:

On a similar vein, I’ve got two tickets from the last BA sale, to NYC over Easter but heard nothing from them about cancellations, (although the actual flights have been changed twice already.) There’s no likelihood of it going ahead, and even if they were and the USA started allowing visitors by then, the quarantine rules would make it a no go, so what are people’s experiences already in regards to cash refunds and vouchers and what have you bring going for? The prices were ridiculously good value and if offered vouchers, will be unlikely to get such a deal again. Have BA been difficult to get cash back?

      • ChrisC says:

To repeat the answers to this often asked question,

If BA cancel the flight you can have a refund (or rebook to a later date for no extra charge within certain parameters)

If you chose not to go then it’s a voucher.

        • Olly says:

Thanks@Chris – I’m aware of the normal outcomes of you cancelling as the customer and them cancelling as the flight operator but I’m asking people’s experiences in what BA have actually been doing. For example, the Government have put a blanket ban on leisure travel so the flights may well go ahead but we legally can’t go on them as opposed to “chose not to go”, so where do we stand with refunds? What has been BA’s strategy for dealing with people who have already been in that situation during the current lock down is what I’m more interested in?

          • Michael C says:

V briefly, if BA cancel, you can have cash. If YOU choose to cancel, you can have a voucher.

          • Tracey says:

Exactly the same. Refund if cancelled, voucher if the flight operates.

          • meta says:

Planes are flying not just for leisure passengers. There are those going on business, citizens and residents who can return to US, cargo, etc. BA probably won’t cancel the flight, but maybe they will reduce the number. You can only hope your flight is one of the reduced one. If the flight times have changed significantly, you can also get a refund or reroute on another date.

          • Anna says:

You said it’s been changed already – if you’ve got a new flight number you have the same rights as if it’s been cancelled. As meta says, the flight may well still go. Your best bet may be to try and get it moved to a future date if you want to preserve the ticket price.

      • Jonathan says:

Not really BA’s issue if you’re permitted to travel or not. You must have purchased it after Covid became a universally recognised event?

If the flight still goes ahead then a BWC voucher is actually a pretty good result for a cheap, non flexible, ticket so I wouldn’t waste your time asking for a reschedule or refund.

If the flight number has changed though rather than just a retiming of less than 4 hours then you have full cancellation rights ie. take a refund or a reschedule within 365 days of booking date. BA are currently pretty reliably processing either of those options for cash bookings.

        • Tarmohamed says:

Not wanting to give the airlines an idea, but why don’t they instead of changing the flight number codeshare with their own flights? Or is that not possible? So if there are 2 flights, YY1 at 1pm and YY2 at 3pm, create a bee flight YY3 at 1pm and have it carry all 3 flight numbers ?

          • Nick says:

Can’t do that, against codeshare rules abs practices. Wouldn’t be possible in the GDS/PSS, or at least not for low enough cost to make it worthwhile.

          • Lady London says:

what about airlines that don’t use GDS, @Nick? if their own systems would do it (I am thinking the likes of Ryanair here) would the airline still be barred from doing this?

          • ChrisC says:

Imagine the confusion if the same flight number (and a codeshare number is still a flight number) is used on different flights on the same day.

Not only for passengers but for check-in staff as well.

          • Nick says:

@LL very good point, I actually have no idea. Ryanair doesn’t ‘do’ codeshares generally, but I don’t know whether their it would technically be feasible within their PSS. I do know it’s totally impossible for legacy/network airlines.
