The HfP chat thread – Sunday 7th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just noticed this, Onefinestay Amex offer £200 off £200+ which was due to expire on 31st March is now set to expire 31st August. Was anyone able to split payment across cards with Onefinestay? I’ll probably try that out now that it is more usable but if anyone has been successful with it that would be helpful.

    • Andrew says:

And if people have forgotten – it’s an ongoing monthly benefit on Platinum, but like Addison Lee, not actually listed as an available or saved offer.

    • Polly says:

Totally won’t split it. Have been trying for a while now. The most they will do is one booking split between deposit and balance. Very very inflexible really. Stressed the point that they are nothing like Airbnb! Quite condescending when asked…

      • Rob says:

Not really surprising is it? If I could book a £1000 stay across the 5 Amex cards on which I have this offer, they would lose £800 in hard cash assuming their only take a 20% commission usually. Under what scenario are they expected to welcome your attempt to push them into bankruptcy?!

  • stairali says:

Is Curve for 1.5% the only way to get points from paying stamp duty (unless Curve Metal of course).

    • Chrisasaurus says:

I’ve a feeling the Tesco debit card if you have it gives points, though it doesn’t for most financial or cash-like transactions

    • SwissJim says:

      Revolut…

      • SwissJim says:

And why stop at stamp duty? I bought a £250,000 flat on Revolut last year…..

        • EwanG says:

If only HMRC took cards to settle an IHT liability…..
(I could do transfers from the Revolutionaries, but expect it has a good chance of being flagged before I make a dent in it)

Has anyone been to Bahrain for a holiday / was thinking of booking flights with one of my companion vouchers for September/October – Dubai doesn’t seem to be available business class so looking at Bahrain – maybe the Ritz Carlton – anyone been there ? Was thinking of a club room to get drinks and snacks included . Any suggestions would be much appreciated 😊 thanks

  • Lady London says:

    Hum. Speaking of rip-off
costs in the UK for Covid tests, Lidl supermarket in Germany is selling a pack of 5 self-tests for 21.99 Euros.

That’s £20 or LESS for 5 – five Covid tests. (antigen type).

Looks like the Germans won’t be missing out on their holidays then.

    • Anna says:

Is anyone off to Germany on business soon?!
Any chance we’ll see these in the middle aisle over here? 🤣

    • Lady London says:

online free delivery included in that.

so less than £4 per test – including delivery.

they’ll let you order up to 25 tests in one order. You’ll still be under £100 even if you went for 5 packs of 5 – so 25 tests for that.

Remember Lidl’ll be making a profit, still, at those prices covid antigen tests are being sold to Germans for.

    • Callum says:

I’m not surprised. Those tests aren’t particularly expensive to make but also aren’t particularly accurate.

Much better than nothing, but they create huge numbers of false negatives.

      • TGLoyalty says:

They are accurate for those that are most infectious.

On the opposite side PCR tests are continually being criticised for use to diagnose people as positive when there is no other clinical evidence they have it ie symptoms. WHO advices against just giving people PCR tests if asymptomatic and if they are done to retest them at a later date.

    • lumma says:

Or you could just go to one of these and collect 14 of these tests for free

  • MKB says:

If you want a laugh, go and look at the location code on National Mexico car rental system for Cancun International Airport.

  • Mco says:

How can I check if the kids earned the points from their recent flight to our household account? Can’t see any option to see their balance.

  • Track says:

Have just learned that members of diplomatic missions / employees of international organisations (+ family members) do not actually need to quarantine in hotel EVEN IF coming from the red list country. Only advised to self-isolate.

I am sorry, what is the point of this measure then — if there are broad scope exemptions?

When flights pick up, this is an easily a cohort of 200+ / a day coming into the country not subject to any restrictions — unlike us plebs.

    • Chris says:

It tends to sour relations with countries when you imprison their Vienna Convention protected diplomats. Worse if they were put up in the Britannia Gatwick; that might be a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

      • Lady London says:

“MP’s and public servants on official business”, too, IIRC.

Wonder what official business certain MP’s and other officials will be performing that might involve seeing their family members abroad?

Wondering have they also got exempted from the UK’s piss-take rate of over £200 for PCR tests

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Every country has a diplomatic visa system, for diplomats, diplomatic missions and certain international organisations like the UN.

You could never realistically quarantine these people. Uk passport holders who go abroad on official business probably will be quarantined

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

Oh and trips are usually sanctioned by the security of states office

    • BS says:

Closely working with people in this category, although they are ‘exempt’ they are closely monitored by their own embassy and expected to rigidly follow a quarantine equal to the hotel requirements.

  • John W says:

With so many accounts and cyber security , I am thinking of getting password Manager >. Any recommendations of referrals ?

    • kitten says:

      Bitwarden, Lastpass etc

    • Tom North says:

Dashlane, syncs across all devices PC and mobile. Here is a referral for 6 months free: https://www.dashlane.com/cs/Hs3F5dfoRTPo

    • Jimbob says:

Bitwarden seems as good as any of the paid ones

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Personally I just use the Chrome one, but if I was going to pay, I’d find Troy Hunt’s endorsement of 1password pretty compelling.

    • Sam says:

I use 1Password Family. My wife now has better password security and we can share some passwords (you can put them in private/shared groups)

We also put key documents (wills and stuff) in there which I share with my brother just in case

If you only use Mac’s, you could just use Safari

Microsoft have recently introduced better password security via Edge and their Authenticator app too which are worth exploring. When my 1Password expires, I will prob try this one

      • Tony Soprano says:

        Another vote for 1Password here.
Family plan means I can easily share with parents. Cross platform/browser support is handy and again we use it to save key documents (passport/license copies etc).

    • Jay says:

Check out Sticky Password. The Premium lifetime licence is on sale on Stack Social for $29.99 one off fee. Can share log ins and support is very good.

    • Harry T says:

I’ve used LastPass for over ten years and I’ve never had a bad experience. Totally reliable and easy to use.

    • memesweeper says:

      Bitwarden

even the free tier has all the features most people need

      • Tyler Durden says:

Lastpass is changing, soon the free tier will only allow one type of device, e.g. mobile OR pc
