The HfP chat thread – Saturday 6th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Louise K says:

NHS Vaccination Booking is now available for >55

    • Andrew says:

More accurately, anyone aged 56 or over.

      • ChrisC says:

I misread it as 55 and over so it threw me out when I put my DoB in and said I wasn’t a front line worker.

Also this warning if you claim to be a front line NHS / Social Care Worker –

“If you book an appointment and do not bring official proof that you are eligible you will not be vaccinated when you come to your appointment.”

      • TGLoyalty says:

        >55 was accurate as >=55 would mean 55 and over.

Anyway you can book if you’re any age but classed are a main carer for someone at high risk from coronavirus

There isn’t much proof available of that ‘status’ but you would need something that shows you care for a loved one at high risk.

        • Mouse says:

55 years and one day would be >55 but not eligible

          • Andrew says:

Indeed. Which is why the NHS make it clearer by saying aged 56 or older and why I added the clarity to this post.

          • Andy says:

Although my 48 year old teacher friend and all the other teachers at her secondary and her son’s primary school got vaccinated on Thursday. Does seem some flexibility on a local level

          • Sandgrounder says:

≤56 or <55 are both right, because we are dealing in integer values, and you always round down with an age. So 55+1 day is still 55 by the standard convention. But you could argue about it all day!

GPs near me (but sadly not mine) who are vaccinating have started on 40+, a friend who is 43 has an appointment for Wednesday, not a risk group.

          • TGLoyalty says:

We all know it works in full years and not days.

        • stevenhp1987 says:

Except it doesn’t work if you’re an unpaid carer of someone at high risk yet, despite what it says!

Still only asks if you’re a health or social worker and then says not eligible even if you are an unpaid carer.

          • Lord Doncaster says:

            Not eligible for Carer’s Allowance?

          • Reney says:

Hi, have you made sure the person is recorded as a carer with their GP? We got our GP practice to make sure their records recognised that, as we had an unpaid carer in the family.

      • Martin says:

Thanks for heads up – have booked today

        • meta says:

@Andy I heard from some of my friends in northern England, they have already started vaccinating over 40s because they’ve offered it to everyone over 50.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Yes your local GP will work down their own list. Offers will go out and if they don’t take it up go down the next in the list.

        • Sandgrounder says:

Hahaha ≥56 or >55 dose of own medicine there.

      • Tracey says:

Or 56 by the end of the quarter. The NHS booking site uses your age at the end of each quarter to calculate eligibility.

    • Cheshire Pete says:

Salford NHS are inviting all 50> as of last week. I think different areas are aligned a bit different.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Yep will depend on your local population demographic and it’s urban density.

For those above saying it won’t allow carers just book as a social worker and show relevant carer paperwork at your centre, It’s harder to prove if you are unpaid but if there is anything you can take along to show the person you care for is high risk they will take a look.

They aren’t after chapter and verse just something that confirm your claim is credible.

  • KBuffett says:

Does anyone here work at Corinthia London? Please tweet me @KiloPapa77

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Can you use VA points from your wife’s account to make up a shortfall of points needed for a flight booking?
I’m sure I read if you call up VA to make a booking they do this and not needing you to transfer the points over on the web costing fees?

    • Harry T says:

Actually not meaning to be pedantic, but do you mean Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Australia? If VS, then yes, I have heard you can use points from two accounts when booking over the phone. I seem to recall that they have to be in certain aliquots but I can’t remember how the breakdown has to work.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Yes Virgin Atlantic flying club. I WhatsApp CS today but they stated it had to be done by transferring points which comes with fees?

      • kitten says:

aliquots… is that the new pluripotent?

    • Travel Strong says:

You need enough points in the other account for an entire sector for 1 person. So need = 5 figure amount generally, a few thousand cannot be used and are generally not worth paying to transfer.

    • Tyler Durden says:

Unsurprisingly Virgin have been very flexible lately, if your both travelling i cant see it being an issue, however if its just a single person travelling they may push back, a phone call would be the way to avoid a default “computer says no” response.

      • AnotherUser says:

I made a VS booking for two on the phone, where there was only enough points for one leg in one account. Differemt staff told me different things, though – could HUACA if refused the 1st time

    • James. says:

Pre COVID, I asked the same question.

My understanding is that if your wife authorises you on her account (temp authorisation) which can be done via text service they can pool the points for the booking (without fees).

You need to book on the phone and both be present as they would find the booking, hold the seats, transfer allocated points from one to the other then book.

Now, never tried this so things could be different now

      • James. says:

I have found the texts. This information was from Sept 2019 so could well out of date now. But worth a check

  • Doug M says:

FT reporting Lloyds vouchers being extended to 31st October.

    • Matthew says:

Yes just extended mine via chat this morning. Done in about 2 mins. Easy 👍

      • YC says:

Yup – good reminder. Just did this. A trick to get the ‘live chat’ to pop up is to change the location to USA. No need to login, etc.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

How are you seeing your vouchers? I lost sight of mine when my Avios account got messed up

      • Doug M says:

I don’t think you can, I think you just have to know they exist.

      • The Streets says:

Thanks for reminder! I just called on 03444930787 and all you need is your BA details

    • Doug M says:

Yes just did mine on live chat. Usual IAG/BA rubbish of supposed security and data protection. Launch chat from within website whilst logged in, they then ask for account number, name, address, DOB and email. Really do not like passing that much information via text to an Internet random.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Cheers TS for clearing that one up. 👍

  • SJ says:

Is anyone else still getting emails from The Mail implying that they’re still signed up for the Ultimate Pack?
Like everyone know also tried, I got refunded for not being eligible for the offer but still get the emails and just this morning got one saying ‘ We hope you are enjoying The Ultimate Pack’

The optimist in me is hoping they might still mistakenly credit the nectar points, but I’d say that’s highly unlikely!

    • meta says:

If they do mistakenly credit, I hope everyone just abstains from commenting.

      • Harry T says:

Don’t worry meta, I’m sure a load of people will ring the DM to make sure they were supposed to receive the points even though their subscription was cancelled 😂

        • Doug M says:

That one really rattled your cage. People endlessly discuss things better left unmentioned, why did that one in particular annoy you.

    • Harry T says:

Yep, I’ve had two of these emails but no reply to my complaint email.

    • Red Flyer says:

Yes so I called to get off their list and bagged 12000 nectar as a consolation offer if I maintain direct debit for 2 months

  • Chrisasaurus says:

Card yard have JL vouchers at 4% off regularly

Our work scheme sells them at 5% discount from Memory, not used in a while

  • Stephen says:

Hi. I’ve just switched from being a FTE to a limited company contractor and I’m currently going through all the admin of setting up a company. Do the approaches that Rob has written articles on in the past still work to earn points for VAT and Tax payments to HMRC (so using curve metal business with underlying mastercard, capital on tap etc). Apologies if covered recently but I’ve just done a search and the relevant articles are from 2020 so wondering if these still work. Thanks.

    • memesweeper says:

yes, personal Curve Metal + card of choice is fine

daily limits will mean you’ll have to make multiple payments and track these, most likely

    • Jonathan says:

You either get a Curve Metal commercial card which will incur fees from HMRC but be legitimate or get a Curve Metal Personal which will be fee free but liable to get you shut down if Curve twig. Miles & More were apparently pretty on the ball & COT also good at spotting incorrect use of personal/commercial cards for HMRC but I’m not sure about Curve.

      • Harrier25 says:

You won’t get shut down for having a Curve personal card instead of a business card, and most of your day to day spending on it will probably be personal anyway.

        • memesweeper says:

          +1

unless the T&Cs of the card disbar it , it’s completely legit to pay VAT on a personal card and reduce your director’s loan

      • Alan says:

        Can anyone help with this

As of today, I am getting an unrecognised card error trying to buy Premium Bonds on a Curve metal business. Is this a “legitimate” use and is there anywhere that explains the difference between what is permissible on personal and business

        Thanks

    • Rob says:

Curve Metal worked fine for me paying some VAT this week, with my Lufty card underlying it.
