We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • The real John says:

PSA for anyone who missed it yesterday evening:

BA has locked everyone out of their accounts because an airline industry organisation has suffered a data breach. Even though no BA data was stolen, BA thinks that many people used the same password on other airlines as on BA so they are inconveniencing everyone.

To regain access you need to use the forgot password function to change your password. You must use your *email address* as the Login ID because your BAEC number won’t work.

You may need to reset your password up to 3 times before it will let you in. Not sure if you have to choose a different new password every time.

After resetting, you still won’t be able to log in using your BAEC number (at least for now).

    • Andrew says:

I was also logged out of the Nectar app and had to login again.

    • ChrisC says:

I’ve not been locked out of my BA account and have just logged into the app with no problems at all. Not even a warning flashed up.

Ditto with my nectar account – not had an auto logout on that either.

      • ChrisC says:

Ditto with the website. Able to log in with my existing BAEC number and password.

I did get the Sita email from them and will change my log in details over the weekend.

        • John says:

Strange. My account in my dad’s name was locked out – he lives in asia and has never set foot on a BA plane or credited any avios from flying – I only opened it to double dip on some Tesco stuff, so there is no conceivable reason to assume the password was compromised (well, the password used to be hello1. Now changed)

      • BJ says:

We could log in to ours too but decided to change them anyway.

    • Sam says:

      Haven’t been locked out

I did receive an email from Singapore but that stated that my details had not been compromised

    • BJ says:

Seems like we might only get the multiple steps if we have a mobile number in our profiles. My dad doesn’t and his password change was the usual simple procedure.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I’m not locked out at all so it’s not everyone.

    • AJA says:

I still haven’t got the email from BA but did change my password yesterday when I saw the reports of others getting it. I managed to do it before the rush. It took me a few minutes, I got the 2FA code and password successfully changed. Even better I can still access the account with my Exec No on both website and apps. I suspect the reason BA has disabled the Exec No as a means of access is because that is what is used to identify you in the Nectar app which conveniently also tells you how many points you have in both schemes, Wonderfulfor fraudsters.. It’s a bit of a farce as I think it’s good BA has asked us to change passwords just in case but as seems the norm with BA and IT it’s FUBAR and/or SNAFU.

    • Craig says:

I’m guessing it’s only those who had a flight over a particular timeframe?

    • RussellH says:

Not locked out of mine. Logged in as normal.
I upgraded my password to an 18 char one exactly a month ago.
Being able to log in using your a/c number or e-mail seems like making it easier for the hackers. I set up a unique username around 2½ years ago.

    • Tariq says:

Reset password using the forgotten password link last night, couldn’t login then even with email as username but tried this morning and logged in straight away.

    • Lady London says:

I’ve had the email for that IATA data breach from about 5 airlines now.

None of them blocked my account. None of them insisted that password be changed although they did suggest it.

Only BA has locked everyone out. And it’s taking up to 3 password resets to get back into our account? No credit card details were lost. What on earth is BA trying to (over)compensate for ?

      • Rob says:

BA hasn’t locked people out. They removed the lock overnight. My accounts, which I didn’t try to access last night, are fine.

  • BS says:

If BA gave the information to them, and our contract is solely with BA, it is BA’s responsibility for the loss, no?
Either way, it doesn’t look like too bad: my name is the worst and bit I care about. My meal preferences less so…

  • Erico1875 says:

I have an offer on Nectar, 22000 points for life cover of £20 a month, payable after 5 months

    • SwissJim says:

If you die before you cancel it’s probably not too bad a deal. Otherwise personally I would give it a miss.

      • Andrew says:

Agreed. Paying £100 for £110 isn’t worth the hassle.

        • Erico1875 says:

It’s not 110 for 100 though. You are getting life insurance

        • Gavin says:

In other words you’re being paid £10 to get £100 worth of insurance for 5 months, so it could be worth it for anyone that was considering taking out a life insurance policy.

    • BJ says:

If you’re over 50 then the over 50 plan gets you 20k for £5/month. Maximum two per household per year.

      • Erico1875 says:

        Yes I’m over 50 BJ

        • BJ says:

But given your comments above not such a good deal if you actually want life cover as over 50 plans are rubbish. I figured you just wanted the points.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

The Tesco Pet Insurance offer – anyone done it yet & worked out how to qualify as I read the exclusions seem to equal out the bonus?

    • Lee says:

Offer excludes Accident & Injury cover and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.
Just go for a standard one, £4.12 pm is the lowest you can get.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

So all Bendy curve personal cards working at Ernie or not?

    • Memesweeper says:

Mine wasn’t working last night at my local chippy!

      • FFoxSake says:

Personal blue bendy declined at Ernie for the first time ever this morning. 4k still showing as charged to underlying creator in bendy app. Hopefully that will undo itself soon…
Teething trouble with new Ernie authentication? Or the end of that particular road?

    • BP says:

Ernie haven’t blocked them (yet). I signed up for a new personal bendy after my commercial got blocked. Ernie doesn’t give the same “Invalid Card” message as it does with a commercial card.

The payment on personal does fail right enough but I expect that until I build up a bit of day to day transaction history with bendy.

      • Benilyn says:

@BP – how do you sign up for a new personal? I’ve emailed asking for a personal (hold commercial right now) but slow replies…

    • Anna says:

No, getting everything declined at the moment from Ernie to Iceland! Wondering whether to apply for a new card.

    • LST says:

Bendy to Ernie via WE had been dead for me for the last four days.

    • Sean says:

blue bendy with beardy and solihull working fine this morning. I always request an sms to approve.

      • Aston100 says:

Did two transactions like that this week.
        Worked fine for me.

    • BlueHorizonUK says:

There is a issue with 3DS and they say with a small number of users (how small is anyones guess). Auto charge transactions (like Netflix) go through. Anything that needs a 3DS authorisation (in app or by text) is getting declined but shows as pending on underlying card. Will get reversed back after a couple days. It is very annoying. Seems to have started a few days ago so something has hone wrong. If you tell them, they will say there was insufficient funds on your card but after sending them numerous screenshots they then came back with the 3DS issue.

      • James. says:

I had this issue and posted n the forum a couple of days ago. They do not have an ETA for fixing this. I bite the bullet and reported my card lost and got a new one. No issues since

  • KBuffett says:

I’ve stumbled across a local shop with a small post office counter inside. AmEx works fine. Is there a way to rack up some cyclic spend?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Amex works fine at all post offices?

      • KBuffett says:

Thanks TG, I rarely go to the post office, so I wasn’t aware.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Unfortunately unless they have a pay point too I’m not aware of any new route to hit spend targets other than buying your road tax etc there

    • Phil W says:

I pay for my council tax at the Post Office in Edinburgh.

      • Charlieface says:

You cannot use a credit card to pay council tax at a PO counter. A lot of concession POs have a separate Paypoint terminal though, and this will be billed under the main shop’s name

  • Colin says:

Anyone actually won points in the Virgin Red spin the wheel?

    • MD says:

Nope. Done it every day, with a supposedly 50% change of points, got zero. Statistically improbable, one might say.

      • mradey says:

Two out of three exec accounts received the BA email.

None of the accounts were ‘locked out’. No alerts on logging in and no requirement to change passwords

        • mradey says:

Oops! Spun every day and I have not won any points either.

    • Tariq says:

Yes got a 500 point voucher last weekend.

    • S879 says:

      Just 200, very disappointing campaign.

    • Paul says:

Yes I finally got 500 points on Wednesday

    • Mouse says:

Just got 500 points now – thanks for the reminder!

    • Catman says:

1000 here winner winner chicken dinner!!!!

    • Joe says:

Between our two accounts, we have won once (1,000)!

      • David D says:

T&C’s show the following details for prizes available for the whole competition.

One (1) prize of one million (1,000,000) Virgin Points
Fourteen (14) prizes of five thousand (5,000) Virgin Points
Twenty Eight (28) prizes of two thousand (2,000) Virgin Points
Seventy (70) prizes of one thousand (1,000) Virgin Points
One hundred and forty (140) prizes of five hundred (500) Virgin Points
One thousand one hundred and forty eight (1,148) prizes of two hundred (200) Virgin Points

So maybe looks like a 50% chance on the wheel, but more likely a 0.002% of winning a prize based on around 500,000 downloads.

  • Ant says:

Craft Gin – i have a 50% off subscription, & i am trying to combine this with the Amex offer spend £40 get £20 back. But all their subscriptions are £40, less 50% £20. Not enough to trigger the Amex offer. Tried to add some gin from the online shop but i cannot seem to combine the order to take it over the £40.
Anyone had any success in using their Amex cash back?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Is it cumulative? Two subs?

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

I just did the first month half price and then did the second month using the Amex offer. Decent value at £20.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Was the 50% off targeted can only see 30% off on the website?

      • ant says:

Try HFGIN50 for 50% just worked for me, don’t think it is targetted

        • TGLoyalty says:

Cool thanks I’ll give it a whirl.

Though there a £40 free bottle of gin (no idea what size but they say full size which is 70cl in the UK in my mind) offer too which will hit the spend target and even a mediocre bottle of gin costs £15 in the supermarket.
