We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • James says:

How long does it usually take for points to arrive on a referred Amex Platinum card?

    • Rob says:

      2-3 days

      • James says:

Thanks Rob. Is that from them receiving notice of being approved?

        • Jay says:

In may case they have always posted the day the card arrives which at the moment is 48 hours after approval. Issue at the moment I have is that spend MR are not posting to the MR account vent after 5 days of spend date.

          • James says:

If the person spends the £4K and then wishes to immediately close the account, can the MR points be clawed back from Amex?

          • Rob says:

            No.

Amex does do clawbacks if you refund a purchase which triggered a bonus, although you may have transferred them out by then of course ….

        • Ben says:

Mine was from my Amex Gold to wifes Business Gold – Applied Tue – She got email confirmation Wed and my referal points arrived Thursday

        • Rob says:

Yes, so if improved immediately you get the bonus before they receive their card.

    • Jay says:

If you spend the target amount to get the bonus and then close the points are not clawed back as you have met the terms of the offer. Just use / transfer the points before closing account (albeit you have a grace period to use the points after the account is closed).

      • James says:

Thanks Jay. What’s the most valuable way to use the 50k MR points, in people’s opinions?

        • Rob says:

Depends what you want to do, your willingness to pay taxes on top and what other points you will earn. 50k is almost a return Business Class ticket to the Middle East via Singapore Airlines for example, until the Singapore transfer rate changes on 1st April. You’d get about £500 of Radisson hotel rooms at peak dates in peak cities. You’d get multiple US domestic flights.

It all depends on what you are after. If you are being REALLY fussy then 49,000 points + $5 for Singapore Airlines in Business Class from Istanbul to Singapore is probably as good as you can get, albeit until 1st April only.

      • Harry T says:

The only exception might be if you really take the mick and get loads of refunds after hitting the spend, making it clear you didn’t really hit the spend in an honest manner. But even then, probably would be fine. Best use of MR tends to be transfers to air miles. Rob has a whole article on the best use of MR.

  • Martyn Ford says:

Apologies if this is a repeat question but I searched and couldn`t find an answer.

Is there a weekly limit when going via Solihull to The Revolutionists to Ernie? Many thanks.

    • Ben says:

Can I get a clue on Solihull please? I understand all the others just a little at a loss on this one.

    • Jonathan says:

No hard limit but expect a rapid shutdown as soon as Che & co get the hint you’re using them to MS. You’re then stuck dealing with their appalling CS to get your funds back.

    • Aston100 says:

I find you can overpay the Solihull bunch and then transfer that to the revolutionaries.
Not sure why you’d want to then move that payment to Ernie though, when you could just go Solihull > personal bendy > Ernie (though some people (not me) are having issues with this route at the moment).

      • Bee says:

Lost with the lingo….What is Ernie?

        • Chris K says:

The fastest milkman in the west.

More relevantly, he’s also a random number generator for a certain Government-run “National” savings scheme

        • WaynedP says:

The fastest Milkman in the West, of course.

          • Philip says:

            What is Sollihul and Beardie?

          • Aston100 says:

Think creatively about people who are celibate.

          • AndyGWP says:

Solihull clearly relates to Richard Hammond who was born there, which links us to Top Gear.

Top Gear then links us to Jeremy Clarkson who is the current host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire

The previous host to that was of course Chris Tarrant, whose son Toby Tarrant is a presenter on Radio X

Toby Tarrants show follows on from Chris Moyles current show

Chris Moyles used to host the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show…

… I won’t patronise you, as I’m sure you can figure out the rest 🙂

          • WaynedP says:

@AndyGWP Brilliant, thanks – brightened up a slow Friday afternoon for me 🙂

  • Jay says:

Word of warning if you add a new Business Card to a personal Amex online account. There seems to be an issue where Amex doesn’t correctly link the business card to your MR account, hence any spend on the card does not show in the MR balance and doesn’t count towards the bonus. Keep an eye out and if this happens do an online chat, it is a manual fix that can take 10 working days 🙁

    • KBuffett says:

This might actually be a good thing, having two separate MR accounts.

  • RobL says:

Is there anyway of funding Ernie on Ax via some intermediary?

    • Tyler Durden says:

trade 4 goats with your local farmer for cash, then use the cash for funding Ernie

      • WaynedP says:

Agreed, must be cash. Avoid credit card to prevent goats from charging…
        (only kidding)

    • DT says:

Got an email from KrisFlyer about it, just some template email explaining it’s not their fault

    • Sandgrounder says:

I had an email from SIA about this yesterday.

  • Youllnever says:

Hey Rob, has there been any update on whether there’ll potentially be a new Hilton credit card? TIA

  • Andrew says:

It’s interesting that the BBC are using the phrase “travel abroad is illegal until at least 17 May” in relation to the Cyprus story today. Aren’t the legal restrictions to this expiring at the end of March?

    • marcw says:

Majority of peeps won’t have both vaccine shots anyway by that time?

      • Aston100 says:

But the type that go to Cyprus probably will have.
I recall a visit to Larnaca or Limassol or something like that, back about 30 years ago.
The entire place was full of grannies. Yes that included the topless beach…

        • Anna says:

Is Ayia Napa still the place for clubbing? There, San Antonio and Faliraki used to be the where it was at in the 90s!

          • Aston100 says:

I wish I’d learnt this 30 years ago – I could have saved my poor eyes from the horrors that were displayed on the beach that week.
            *PTSD triggered*

          • James says:

Well if that was 30 years ago you’ll likely now be in the same or approaching the same demographic. Don’t look in the mirror.

          • Aston100 says:

What if I had been a ten year old that went there with my parents?

          • James says:

Well, were you? Only you can know that and I’m sure you can do the maths accordingly.

  • AviosNewbie says:

Trying to pay beardy through the app – anyone else having an issue? First tried making the payment via bendy, but didn’t go through. Then tried using my usual current account debit card, but still no luck. Payment keeps getting declined. I called my bank to ask if there was some issue, but they said they haven’t received any payments to be debit card. Then I call up Virgin customer services, and they say they can’t see any attempted payments on the credit card. But app keeps showing declines. Their appalling customer service says they can accept only a maximum of £750 debit payment over the phone. Anyone else facing the same issue?

    • Tyler Durden says:

      What kind of payment?

      • aviosnewbie says:

Oh, I meant repayments sorry. Repaying the credit card balance

        • AndyGWP says:

I tend to do a bank transfer to pay off my Virgin credit card (rather than pay from within the app). Never had an issue. They provide you the bank details on their website, and you just need to make sure you add your 16 digit card number as the reference number.

    • James says:

Just make a faster payment from your bank account?
