The HfP chat thread – Thursday 4th March

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Email in from Uber entitled ‘Help keep each other safe by staying at home’ offering me 30% off my next ten trips if I ignore their advice and don’t stay at home. Not a code, it’s been added to my account. I have to take all these ten trips by Sunday so that’s a lot of essential travel they expect me to take, bearing in mind they must know I haven’t taken an Uber for a year.

    • MQ says:

If you don’t have any essential travel you won’t be needing this offer. It’s not that difficult.

      • Kevin C says:

If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t reply to light hearted posts. Also not that difficult.

    Hot off the press:

HSBC removing Boingo access from Premier cards. Received this email from them just now!

    Hello xxx,

From 30 April 2021, you’ll no longer be able to access unlimited Wi-Fi via Boingo. This is a benefit currently offered to all of our HSBC Premier Credit Card customers, allowing you free access to multiple Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide

    Why is this changing?

We want to make sure that our customers continue to benefit from exclusive features with their Premier Credit Card. A recent review highlighted that very few of our Premier Credit Card customers now use the unlimited Wi-Fi feature, so we’ll be removing this. You can still use this feature until 30 April 2021.

    • 747_Brat says:

I hold the free Premier card at the moment, hence the email mentions only the Premier card. Not sure if they are removing Boingo offering from WE cards too. I am sure someone here can confirm that soon.

I wonder why no one is accessing public hotspots? Anyone know?

      • Youllnever says:

Are they wrong though? Unless you’re travelling abroad (which a lot aren’t at the moment), most people have large/unlimited data usage on their mobile plans. Also, a lot of places abroad provide free wifi access anyway.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

On that logic, the travel insurance will be next!

      • Ali M says:

I don’t access public wifi anymore.have my 5g in europe and all middle east airports have good connectivity anyway

Another 1,150 jobs are at risk at J Sainsbury as the supermarket group makes head office cuts and shuts its online grocery warehouse to save money and invest in improving its food ranges.

Sainsbury’s said it would make about 500 head office redundancies by simplifying roles in human resources, the supply chain, technology, commercial operations and general merchandise and clothing divisions.

Grab as many nectar points as possible before the party’s over!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

A lot of what I have read about it sounds like they are trying to take advantage of efficiencies from the pandemic like cutting off space and allowing more to work from home.

The HR efficiencies are intriguing but I suppose when you have that many staff a minor efficency has a massive effect.

The warehouse closure is interesting but really when you think about it driving hours for deliveries is a major cost driver, something even Ocado struggles to overcome. Wharehouses also stop staff from switching between packing orders and stacking shelfs because of the very nature of it. Maybe in a few years the balance will tip for major cities but still not there yet

  • DT says:

Expecting a cancellation for 50% Avios flights soon, though as the trip is two weeks it will probably be the outbound cancelled first. Do I need to wait for the inbound to also be cancelled before I can move both flights to another date?

    • AJA says:

Only need to wait if the two flights are on separate bookings. If both flights are on one booking you can move both flights as soon as you receive a cancellation on either the outbound or inbound flight.

  • RussellH says:

Over the years there have been any number of adverse comments about shops such as Wilko that are not set up to accept Amex contactless.
Forgot to insert my Amex in Wilko this morning: contactless worked fine.
Is it just the one of my local branches, or is it now working across the whole of Wilko?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

I’ll try next time I go to Wilkos… Contactless never worked with Amex there for me.

Google Pay has always worked with Amex in there though.

    • Travel Strong says:

This can’t be new. I recall an Amex offer in either 2017 or 2018 for spend £xx get £xx back at Wilkinsons. I bought gift cards to trigger the offer on multiple amex cards.
Can’t think what other card(s) it would have been if I have not remembered correctly!

    • Travel Strong says:

Sorry just reread – understand this is just about *contactless*. Fair enough!

  • Dace says:

I have used Bendy to creadit Che with Creationalists underlying and it is classing it as Balance Transfer Segment.

    Anyone know what this means?

    • Anna says:

Well first of all you don’t need Bendy for that, just go direct and save your allowance. Secondly “balance transfer segment” usually appears on my IHG account when it’s in credit prior to making a transaction, YMMV.

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Can’t answer your question but can point out that transfers from that Solihull mob to Che can be done fine without the need to involve Bendy in my experience

    • Harrier25 says:

Curve are a nightmare because they change some of the MCC codes that they report to the underlying card and this transaction would also be classed as a ‘Rip-off’ fronted transaction, and so if you are not paying for Curve Metal, a 1.5% charge from Curve would apply too.

There are a few instances where I would use Curve, but so many more where I wouldn’t….and funding Revolut is one you really really shouldn’t be using Curve for.

    • Genghis says:

Basically it means it’s a cash advance. Pay down the full balance asap to avoid interest accruing.

    • Ashish says:

Yes, can pay revolut with anything no need curve. But i am now band from credit card top up after 2 warning. I can use curve but bit risky for my funds

  • Tarmohamed says:

Just an FYI, if your application for a business platinum card goes in to “review” they do send you an email once you’ve been accepted.

  • MT says:

Sorry if it was already asked and answered but has anyone received the 500 bonus Avios for Nectar to BAEC transfer yet? Of the double Nectar points for Sainsbury’s spend?

    • Rob says:

      No, no-one. Including me.

    • Andrew says:

We should be due the 500 in a week or so, 28 days after the mid-Feb closing date. And on the nectar app it confirms that all the double points will post 28 days after the 19 April closing date – so long time to wait for those.
