We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Rubbish Nectar offers this week (after a cracking week last week!) – 11 offers, 210 points max with mostly 10 points on things I will buy (e.g. milk, juice) and 100 points on something I only bought once and won’t buy again!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Similar experience for me on Friday after a few weeks of regular shopping

I have a Friday/Saturday overlap so I’ll see what drops this Friday and probably head back for a more targeted shop.

    • Andrew says:

It is a bit of a poor show for me this week too:-

90 – Sainsbury’s Beef in Black Bean Sauce with Rice
      20 – Sainsbury’s Orange Juice
      10 – Lovett’s Chocolate Digestives
      20 – Cauliflower
      20 – Sainsbury’s Honey Nut Cornflakes
      50 – TTD Zamli Dates
      20 – Sainsbury’s 4 Pints semi
      10 – Loose Onions
      200 – Cherries
      10 – Fig rolls
      10 – Cappelletti
      10 – Sainsbury’s Yoghurt
10 – Any Soup (except chilled)
      10 – Sainsbury’s Fruit ‘n Nut
      10 – Sainsbury’s Ridge Cut Crisps
      200 – TTD 5% Minced Beef
      20 – Pecan Twists
      10 – Double Cream
      10 – Sausage Rolls

      Around 740

Gives me a good reason to make the rather scrummy Lean Squad’s shepherd’s pie again though. (Although I’d call it a “cottage pie” as it doesn’t contain sheepy bits.)

      • Crafty says:

        Thanks for all this information

      • Jill (Kinkell) says:

Ha..you think that’s poor?! Mine are 6 offers amounting to 150 points.

      • Aston100 says:

I felt a disturbance in the force.

      • mvcvz says:

How are you managing to get so many offers? That’s about four times more than I’ve ever received.

    • Joe says:

Ours rubbish too – on both cards !

    • Jay says:

Previously they were great, now it is 10 points on everything, if this is a sign of future earnings then not looking good 🙁

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Their marketing budget is not unlimited!

    • John W says:

Mine was lower than previous week’s , but still 1000 banker on this shop . My changeover day is Thurs
So all good collecting for now fingers crossed

  • Sean says:

M&S Bank just emailed to say that they are closing current accounts later in the year (by August). Makes for an easy decision to switch this to Barclays premier now.

    • kitten says:

      interesting. anyone know why?

      • Anna says:

I’ve just had this as well:
“The way we bank is evolving and the last year in particular has seen many customers switch to online banking and subsequently change the way they pay. As our customers’ needs are evolving, we are focusing our efforts to make sure we create the very best financial services, with the quality and value you expect from M&S Bank.
Due to these changes, we will be closing M&S current accounts later this year, and this means we will also close our associated in-store bank branches.”

Maybe they are moving to a Curve/Revolut-type setup?! Anyway, it’s an incentive to find a better account to switch to (not the Barclays avios one, though, M & S’ requirements are rather more modest!)

  • Dave B says:

What are Sandy Bondies? credit card

    • Sean says:

      NSandI

      • RussellH says:

I have long thought that nsandi.com was a highly inappropriate URL for a government savings website.
Even when I knew that it was NS&I I still imagined someone called Sandi running around in the background.
Maybe something to do with having been involved in school productions of Grease?

  • Mco says:

Someone commented the other day about the mods on FT being super trigger happy. There was a discussion about EK flying empty planes to the UK and I said Greta wouldn’t be too impressed. Got a right telling off and told to stay on the topic which I thought it was.

    • babyg says:

Clearly the mod thought your trumpish swipe at Greta (which I’m sure you thought was funny) wasn’t relevant.

      • James says:

Like it babyg, like it 👍

      • Mco says:

Trumpish? I am not impressed with the enormous wastage of fuel to fly empty planes for one way flights and neither would she.

        • James says:

Your initial comment here sounds like your intention was to snear at Greta’s intentions, which would be very trumpish.

  • Bee says:

Does any know about the 15,000 Virgin Points by opening a free Virgin Money current account as I signed up for that.

But got an email yesterday about claiming wines and charity. Is that in addition to the points? How soon after the set up and conclusion all the conditions do the points come?

    • Doug M says:

I think you’re looking at IT issues rather than an offer. The wine offer was previously available before the points, I thought wine offer had finished.

    • Joe says:

Many switch completed a week ago – the last part of meeting the criteria. No sign of the points email yet – it said within 14 days, so expecting it over the next week.

      • Joe says:

        My switch*

      • TGLoyalty says:

Reminder of all the requirements until you receive your code

        Set up/transfer 2 DD’s
Keep £1k in the companion savings account until you get the code
Download the app and register for mobile banking

        • Bee says:

OK good to know. All conditions for fulfilled. So will just wait for another email on the points.

The email yesterday says Ms Bee, thanks for opening your new current account. Good news – you’ve ticked off all of the criteria, which means your Virgin Wines and Virgin Money Giving rewards are ready to go. Here’s how to claim them.”

  • SJ says:

Just called up to cancel my Amex personal Plat and (as like a few other posters) was offered 50K MR to stay.
Thought I’d chance my arm and see if I could get anything for my BAPP when I was on the phone to them. Also got 1 bonus avios per £.
Successful morning considering I had no intentions of cancelling!

    • James says:

      When are your renewal dates?

      • SJ says:

        October, Plat
        November, BA

        • James says:

Did you receive a retention bonus previous to this for your Platinum?

          • SJ says:

Only opened the card in October, so I was quite surprised they offered retention

          • James says:

Just called and spoke about cancelling my Platinum, no luck. Got a retention bonus last May they said.

    • Travel Strong says:

Just got 35k for not cancelling plat.

I am a few weeks away from renewal, and my desire to cancel was genuine if there were no further incentives.

However I have not spent much at all on platinum in recent times, which may explain the 35k instead of 50k. It’s either personalized, pot luck, or agent discretion!

    • Travel Strong says:

P.S. I also had a retention offer way back in the first round when everyone else was calling for them too.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Same for me on Gold. Personally I think anyone should be calling to cancel right now. Prime time to call was January and February though

  • Anthony says:

Whats BAs policy for moving a 2-4-1 booked during the 50% off avios sale, is it possible to move to a date even if theres no reward seats available? Or is this only possible when they cancel the flight? Do they honour the 50% off?

    • Benilyn says:

You need to wait for it to be cancelled to have options

      • Anthony says:

when they cancel will they allow a move to a new date, even if there isn’t reward seats available?

        • Joe says:

Yes – as long as there are cash seats available.

          • Pete M says:

But they will most likely try and tell you that it’s not possible…

        • Darren says:

          Yes

        • RT says:

You will get mixed results depending on who you talk to. I had a frustrating 5 calls to BA (often with 30-55 minutes of hold music) to try and make head or tail of it. Different people tell you different things. Some are downright unhelpful.
Anyway if you’re going for ANY seats via the *phone* after the flight has been cancelled, it has to be within ticket validity period (the offer period + year, so until 13 October 2021, although one BA Rep said June, 4 out of 5 said 13 October). They can be commercial (non-reward) seats. Again some reps won’t, some will. If you get an unhelpful one, try again.
The only way it seems to extend past the 13 October was MMB or convert the ticket to a voucher (but then you lose your 50%)

  • Mco says:

Easyjet changed my flight by a day. Haven’t been keeping up on their policies. Read elsewhere that I can now request them to change the flight to any Greek destination for the next 12 months? Or get a refund. Is that right?

    • Joe says:

From / to any airport in countries you originally booked, at any time to end of May 2022. You can do it all online in your booking.

    • Jody says:

If they have moved you onto a different flight, and you want to change to a completely different flight, make sure you do it before the flight they have put you on is due to depart (if that makes sense!). It’s a little bit different to if they have cancelled your flight completely, in which case you don’t have to rush to make the change.

If you’ve not done anything by the time the flight they’ve put you on departs, they’ll have you down as a no show which could make things tricky.
