We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’m sure there’s a definite answer to this but I’m inexperienced.

Is there any reason I cannot pay a family member through PayPal for 3/5k to hit the sign up bonus for the Amex gold cards? As far as I can see there would be a fee of £32.

    • Peter K says:

Because paypal is a tough bank to get on the wrong side of and you will definitely be getting their attention by doing them amount friends and family in a short time.
Amex won’t be too pleased either.

    • Anuj says:

Even doing a few hundred can get PayPal suspicious, let alone a few £k.

***Even doing a few hundred can get PayPal suspicious, let alone a few £k.***

Where are people getting this from?
I can understand if the amount paid to ‘friends & family’ is a thousand or so, but I’m sure I’ve read a few comments on this site that it doesn’t take much to upset PayPal.
Why would they get upset if people make use of the service they are offering?
It’s almost like the time decades ago when I asked a shop keeper to help me get a couple of magazines down from the top shelf. They were annoyed that I was perusing and then purchasing nuddy mags. Why bloody well sell them then? Makes no sense at all.

I’ve done many genuine PayPal transactions of one or two hundred pounds or thereabouts to friends and family and have never had a problem. A couple of times it totalled close to a thousand in under a week. No problems.

So, where are people getting info that PayPal hate people using the friends and family feature regularly or for a few hundred pounds?

    • The real John says:

If you pay the fee, indicating to paypal that you purchased an item or service, the family member may not be able to withdraw the money without providing proof of the products sold. Especially if they have never received such a large amount in their account before.

Paypal may also ban their name and address forever – thus anybody who ever lives at that address in the future can never use paypal

Has anyone got experience of the car hire insurance offered by Curve Metal? I can’t worked out what sort of insurance it is, is it the same as the sort of policies that car hire excess insurers offer?

    • Jimbob says:

I think so, but from what I can remember, it only covered cars that cost £20k new, which isn’t many these days.
I’m struggling to find the t&C’s on their website

      • Dr C says:

Should be fine for the lowest cost cars then that fit in 2 adults and 2 kids

        • kitten says:

be careful the car hire co could stick you with an unwanted upgrade at pickup.

  • Bumper says:

Bit of advice from the collective, if you don’t mind.
Enterprise Car Club are saying i damaged a vehicle, which I didn’t – foolishly didn’t take photos at the end of the hire, something I will do religiously if I ever hire from them again – which I doubt I will.
Then next hire reported the damage, and was 4 days after me.
ECC have said it is impossible it was damaged in it car parking space, which is rubbish, and the person who took the photos have taken them in a different location (exif data)
Plus it was supposed to be cleaned after I used it, so surely the cleaner would have noticed the damage?
So they sent me an email, I rang to object and they said they will raise a dispute.
But all that has happened is that I got another email saying I will be invoiced.
I have sent them a strong email in reply denying the damage.

What’s the next step here? I have the excess insurance so could swallow it, but this is a matter of principle.
They can’t say I am responsible for the 4 days in between hires?
If they charge me, I am tempted to just do a charge back. They don’t have any proof, but unfortunately neither do I.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks all

    • Jimbob says:

If you have excess insurance, I’d let them pay up. Life is too short to be stressing over things you don’t have to.

    • Toby says:

I had something similar with Sixt. I was 100% sure I didn’t do the damage and asked for more photos. I realised that the photos didn’t show the numberplate, so I asked them to provide more with the numberplate showing which they said they were unable to and confirmed no charge would be made.

If that doesn’t work I’d explore asking to see CCTV footage for the intermediate days to check if/when damage occured.

Failing that, I find a fair and reasonable email to the country director/CEO usually sorts these matters out, where you calmly lay out the issue and how it hasn’t been handled fairly etc…

    • Aston100 says:

I’ve found Enterprise after care to be excellent.
I’ve only had to contact them for two incidents but they investigated and resolved quite quickly.
Contact their main number and ask for an escalation to be raised.
They will assign a named individual to your case and see it through to conclusion.
At least that’s what happened on both occasions for me.

    • kitten says:

did you get them to check the car when you dropped it and ensure they closed the rental?

    • Tarmohamed says:

I always take a picture of the “vehicle in/return” when signing. I had an issue with Europcar and Hertz where they, a few days later, said there was a liquid spill. I referred them to the vehicle return condition and they did not charge.

  • Simon says:

Hi, any idea why you cannot transfer BA Avios points to Nectar today , I’ve not had any problems before , and not over limit . It says you have to call BA to do it ????

    • Anuj says:

That’s normal, it’s a stop gap until they set up 2 factor authentication to stop fraud.

    • Rob says:

They are putting 2FA in place to stop the fraud.

  • Jay says:

Amex US have launched mobile phone insurance on certain cards inc Platinum, be nice to see this option in the UK. Lost cost to offer but high perceived value.

  • Anuj says:

If I buy one of those travelzoo vouchers for a Marriott hotel, will I earn points and get status benefits during the stay ? Or do I have to book direct with Marriott for that

  • Tarmohamed says:

The wife’s applied for a business platinum card to avail the 100k offer. She is a supplementary card holder on my platinum. They have put her application in review… is there a way to speed this up?

    • Rob says:

No, but Amex normally clears them in 24-48 hours. The biggest issue is that they normally don’t tell you the result of the review – you just get the card through your door in a few days.

      • Tarmohamed says:

Thank you Rob; much appreciated. Hopefully it shows up by Friday so I can pay our CT bill.

  • Tarmohamed says:

    via Billhop ofcourse.
