The HfP chat thread – Sunday 28th February

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • DJ says:

    Hi,

If my friend signed up for a personal Amex card, via my business Gold referral link, do I still get the referral points?

    Thanks

  • Gareth says:

Just had excellent service from BA Holidays through the web chat. Holiday to Canada was due to depart in May, before the earliest date given by Government for international travel. No quibbles, cash refund arranged within a few minutes. Much better than trying to get through on the phone.

  • Baji Nahid says:

I wanted to check if a booking had been ticketed on the MMB page but i am unable to find this or find the ticketing number. Do they display this on MMB?

  • Baji Nahid says:

Also, if you wanted to book a one way ticket from abroad to the UK is there a way to change the currency on the BA website to pounds instead of the respective currency?

    • BigSi says:

No, but if you call BA they will usually let you pay in STG. Sometimes it works out more expensive but usually is equivalent to the foreign price you see.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

If I have to transit (let’s say Zurich) on the way to Dubai (in Nov), what problems can I expect?
There could be more tests required at Zurich and Dubai and a higher chance of testing positive.
If Dubai adds Swiss to red list, will I not be allowed to enter?

    • Andy says:

Depends on each country – for example some have their own testing requirements even for transit passengers – NL is one of them from memory – so if they differ from your final destination (say PCR for transit airport vs. antigen ok for destination airport), you have to make sure you satisfy both

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

There is a lot of water to pass under the bridge before Nov. Certainly increased risk throwing in a connection but it seems futile to try and quantify that now.

    • TGLoyalty says:

What you can be sure of is that connections add more risk.

    • Rob says:

Both could happen, of course. Your only way to be totally safe, assuming the UK and UAE are OK, is a direct flight.

  • ChrisA says:

15 bonus Nectar points just now, via some ‘rub the screen’ promo. It all counts, I suppose.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

That’s what you get when you don’t earn any bonus points.

      It’s nothing speacial

      • KBuffett says:

When do the 10x bonus points on Sainsbury’s post? I’ve got the standard points for the shop delivered today, but no sign of the 10x

      • James says:

This is not the case, I have the ‘rub the screen’ offer when earning bonus points too.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Tryst me, it only happens when you don’t earn bonus points. Sometimes, VERY occasionally it does it anyway but less than 1% of the time.

Analyse it over the long term and you’ll notice the trend. I’ve been a massive nectar collector for 2 and a bit years, it’s fair to say I know how it works

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

The only exception being multipliers as they are processed at a later date so the system gives you one anyway

          • James says:

With the greatest respect, you’re talking rubbish. Have over £2k of nectar points and can assure you I rarely shop in Sainsburys without getting a bonus on something I buy, and regularly get the rub the screen promo.

    • Alan says:

      Lucy you. I got 10

  • Eric says:

Is there a reason why credit card offers/bonuses/mileage accrual are so so unattractive in the UK? The US for one, or even Singapore, is a hell lot more attractive!

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Interchange fee capped in UK, EU and Australia. No cap for USA and SG.

      • TGLoyalty says:

They were never that good even before the cap.

        Less competition than USA.

    • Grant says:

      The cap on interchange fees

    • Harry T says:

Because the nearest competition for Amex are the troglodytes at Creation and Virgin

      • Lady London says:

I like this reply best 🙂

Though as @DougM might say, troglodytes may have some useful aspects… 🙂

    • marcw says:

Interchange fees. And second, no real competition.

    • Lyn says:

The US ones are certainly better, but not necessarily quite as good as they seem. For instance Amex sign-up bonuses are once per lifetime (for that specific card). Also you can’t usually get a pro-rata refund of the annual fee when cancelling a card.

  • MilesOnPoint says:

Anyone know what the timeline is for Heathrow Terminal 3 reopening? (And do we see BA operating any flights from there in the near future, such as Vienna, Vancouver etc..)

    • MilesOnPoint says:

In the Priority Pass app, under Club Aspire T3 is says “This lounge is temporarily closed and will reopen on 19th April 2021”

However I can’t find any other infro re: T3 online

      • Rob says:

April was being discussed at Christmas, but there is no chance now I guess.

        • MilesOnPoint says:

Thanks Rob. Hopefully mid/late May then, pity to keep those lovely CX lounges shut… 🙂

          • Andrew says:

CX and QF lounges will probably remain shut even if the terminal reopens as their flights are all suspended from LHR currently and for the foreseeable.

          • Lady London says:

+1. My worry. Unless the QF lounge in particular, with that interesting gin bar, can pay its way with admissions billed to other OneWorld airlines I can’t see it reopening.

IIRC Qantas has twice now talked about prospective dates for reopening international flights and I think the Australian government said whatever’s Ocker for “We’ll decide that, thankyou” 🙂
