Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 25th February

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    hey guys.
hsbc to avios bonus – read something on here that happens off and on…any one knows / can predict when?🥲

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

    Oh dear…

Martin Lewis money show has just promoted getting the amex gold card to transfer to avios and then transfer to Nectar. Could this be a short lived 2 way exchange?

    • Rob says:

I reckon BA is neutral on this – it gets £ off Amex and pays it out to Sainsbury’s. No real loss.

I don’t think Amex is a huge fan of Martin though. I doubt many of his readers stay beyond Year 1 and they are unlikely to be big spenders.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I’m not sure on BA. If amex are paying 0.8 a point to BA and ba pay nectar 0.5 a point it will be ok. 1 to 1.6 conversion etc. but surely amex get a discount? So that won’t be true. Not sure about BA with Nectar.

Yeh I can imagine that they’re not a fan of him, although a fair few will chance it and probably not hit the spend target so in Amex’s favour.

      • Cormac says:

MSE and HfP are both sites focused on getting the best deals for consumers, not many companies are going to like sites that reveal every loyalty point loophole possible and they almost certainly observe them closely.

I could imagine Amex imposed the 24-month period of not having owned an Amex to claim new bonuses, because of sites like these. Too many card churners!

Don’t worry, i enjoy this site!

        • Rob says:

You are way off the mark, because HfP readers are – on average – substantially wealthier than the average person and are therefore exceptionally good customers. Why do you think Amex spends so much buying ads and sponsored posts with us? Why has Amazon just rebooked the ad campaign we ran for their credit cards last Autumn? These are data driven decisions based on what they see from customers they have got from HfP in the past.

  • mr_jetlag says:

Have just put a tenner on the Euromillions tomorrow – think of all the Greggs sausage rolls £180m could buy 😀

  • mark2 says:

Rang Amex this pm re not cancelling my Platinum card. link of MR account with ARCC and 35,000 MR arrived within an hour.

  • Chris says:

“ Lots of people last year were deliberately booking flights they knew would be cancelled”

Didn’t Rob basically explain this a possible loophole?? Effectively encouraging this behaviour

    • Ali M says:

Yeah I got the idea from here too 😳😳😳 didn’t do anything of course x

  • ChrisA says:

If I transfer a credit balance from Plat (the result of a refund) to a BAPP (with a higher debit balance), which points do I lose?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      None

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Let me clarify.

You’ll lose the points you earned from getting a refund on which ever card the refund was sent to.

There’s no points impact from balance transfer between Amex cards.

        • ChrisA says:

          Thanks very much – appreciated.

          • BJ says:

But you’ll only lose the points on the card you refund to if it is still active. If you close the card before refund hits your account you will not lose any points.

  • Kevin D says:

Any chance on this big points news Rob? I wanna go to bed!!!

    • BJ says:

My guess is the amex 24 month rule will revert to 6 months.

      • babyg says:

my wife got an unexpected signup bonus yesterday, she had previous held the card less than 12 months ago, rob mentioned this was an IT error and not part of an amex change….

      • Hotelier says:

If only … you can’t play with my feelings like that !!!

    • Travel Strong says:

It’s clearly the delayed Blue Bird news

  • Dr C says:

Has anyone had a manual telephone conversion of avios to nectar done within the 10 days yet?
