The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 23rd February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

First, try and see if you can change it online via manage my booking. If that doesn’t work, I’d call again. Make sure you record the call. I would also ask to speak to a supervisor. Clearly state your rights. It might be that they refuse again. Then your only options are either CEDR or MCOL.

  • Andrew says:

I’m assuming that booking with confidence policies also apply to bringing forward your travel should I have booked travel later in the year but becomes possible earlier. I’m speaking specifically about a Virgin cash ticket. And understand any difference in fare will be due.

  • Kaz says:

Flights to DEN cancelled for 28th April used Avois and 241. Trying to change date for availability I can see if I try and look for reward flights using my other 241 voucher but option to change date in manage my booking just keeps saying no availability. I can clearly see it driving me potty – what am I doing wrong

    • Anna says:

I can never do this either – the only reason I can see is that I always have a domestic connection on the booking but it may well be something else!

  • Ben says:

Hello all. I have a flight that has been cancelled on 12th of march this year. Do I have to rebook/take a voucher or get a refund BEFORE the date of the flight (March12th) Or can I mess around with BA organising this stuff after the scheduled/cancelled flight date?
    Thanks in Advance

    • Oli says:

No. I had BA flights due to depart last August that were cancelled, and I only called BA in December for refund. I wanted to keep my options open in case I had travelled at a later date to that destination.

  • Anna says:

Prime Minister Sturgeon on the news. What are the chances of her inviting us all to Scotland for Easter weekend?!

    • The Lord says:

I hear she is going to bring in the rule of 7, potentially allow international travel from May 16 and a full unlocking from June 20. Nothing to do with politics though….

      • Lord Doncaster says:

        June 20 LOL 😂

      • Anna says:

Looks like they are going back to levels/tiers, can’t see that being too popular!

        • The Lord says:

Yikes. Suppose it will help to keep her troubles with Salmond off the front pages

        • Sandra says:

It’s probably easier to do this in Scotland. Apart from the main population across the central belt there’s much larger rural and far less populated areas that always had much lower case levels so those areas will most likely be happy with it, especially on some of the islands!

    • Dave says:

Many of us are already in Scotland.
Looks like I’ll not be able to benefit from the Marriott double night promo unless I sneak down to England.

    • BJ says:

Ask Alex Salmomd … he’ll let you know tomorrow.

    • Andrew says:

Will people be allowed to leave their homes and vote in May?

      • mark2 says:

        only for the SNP!

      • BJ says:

Only if they’re under 60 and not at risk of voting Labour 😀

        • Jayne says:

Always love these pub bore conversations. Keep it up guys.

          • BJ says:

Reality is that Scot Government has returned better performance on covid measured by virtually every stat than the Westminster government has achieved in England. This despite being hamstrung by the limitations of devolution. BoJo can only dream of approval ratings enjoyed by Sturgeon who is attracting substantial support for her handling of covid even amongst those who are unsympathetic to the SNP. Support for the SNP is not much short of 50% and that for independence has been consistently greater than 50% for a year or so. The nonsense in the media is irrelevant, it will fail to impact much on voting patterns in May. Even were Sturgeon forced to resign due to the Salmond issue I doubt there would be much erosion of SNP support. I would still expect them to gain or fall just short of a majority in May despite the difficulty the voting system presents to doing so.

          • ChrisBCN says:

The opening poster was clearly trolling for it

          • Anna says:

Which is bizarre as an independent Scotland would currently be at EU levels of vaccination. In fact, there was an SNP MP on the news the other day saying that the UK vaccination rollout was causing other countries to be deprived of supplies! It wasn’t clear whether she was just taking the opportunity to have a go at the English government or if she really thought Scottish people should be getting fewer vaccines.

          • TGLoyalty says:

My only view on this is it’s a pandemic and we can’t open up properly until everyone opens up USA / Europe being most important

          • Charlieface says:

Arguably, Scotland did much better at Covid because of their lower population density.

We also don’t know how PHS differs in reporting from PHE (which has been consistently reporting higher figures relative to other countries)

          • Lord Doncaster says:

I rather think the SNP are worried that the success of the vaccine drive in the UK will galvanise Euroscepticism due to the far slower EU vaccine programme.

  • Craig says:

Hi Folks, had an Amex Promotional credit of £10? I was expecting £10 from the Rick Stein offer but the credit appeared on the same day which is unusual, any ideas? Amex Offers usually have the offer name on the transaction line?

    • Peter K says:

      Donald Russell?

    • BJ says:

With a little bit of gamesmanship I turned the paypal offer into a minimum £45 back for £70 spend 🙂

    • Anthony says:

I had the same thing this morning. The only thing I think it might be is Rick Stein but I made that transaction on the 3rd Feb

    • Craig says:

Could be Rick Stein, I made another purchase in late January?

      • Billyk says:

It must be Rick Stein not used any other offers this side of New Year.

        • Stu N says:

Same here. The original Rick Stein charge came through as SP* RICKSTEIN PADSTOW so probably didn’t track and doesn’t show as used. This makes me wonder if it will credit again…? It was a blooming’ good lobster…

          • Craig says:

Indonesian curry was lovely, especially as they messed up the delivery date so had to have it twice!

    • RussellH says:

I just got an Amex Promotional credit of £10 too – for a Rick Stein order that did not track.
Rick Stein also made biggest mess of an online order I have ever experienced, plus having to hold for 45 mins in order to talk to someone. Shall not be repeating the experience…

  • jimc says:

I have a question that perhaps a HFP’er could help with; Connecting my Capital On Tap card to Xero? i’ve followed the instructions, Xero says it’s connected, but 24 hours later and no transactions are being pulled through. COT’s help desk are being a bit rubbish. Any ideas?

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Not sure I can offer much except to confirm that COT -> Xero is working as today’s tranactions have come through for me.
Xero support is quite good generally when I’ve asked them small queries in the past. Have they been able to offer anything?

  • Aston100 says:

    QR query.
My flights from BHX to Malaysia in May half term (mostly June 2021) have been automatically changed to fly out from MAN.
I do not expect Malaysia to be admitting tourists at that time, so I expect these flights to be cancelled in the next couple of months.
I don’t want a refund, but would like to use the tickets beyond the Sept ticket validity.
If I do not react to the cancellation, will they automatically refund me once the travel date has passed? or will they do that in late Sept when the validity expires?

It is currently taking well over an hour to get through to QR, and my last phone call to them was fruitless as they kept insisting that due to QR no longer flying from BHX my only option right now is a refund or a reroute from MAN (or LHR apparently). Hence I want to just wait it out until last possible moment and then see if I can push them to reticket me past the one year ticket validity (Sept 2021) – but this will backfire on me if airlines are known to auto refund as soon as the departure (or return?) date has passed.

    • Charlieface says:

Them auto-refunding can’t deny you your EC261 rights, equally they can’t force you to fly from MAN or LHR if you don’t want to. And ticket validity is irrelevant from a legal standpoint also.

But I suggest you get them to put a note on the PNR to hold it open, because it does make things easier
