Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 23rd February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Rob says:

Has anyone called to cancel their amex platinum recently and been offered any MR points to stay?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

A fair few. Try it and see

      • Andrew says:

Good advice to the daily question that’s asked! Everyone is treated individually by Amex so the only way to know what’s on offer to you, if anything, is to call and ask. Others saying they got 50,000 or 0 has no relation to what you will get offered.

        • Mark says:

I got 35k, no strings attached a few weeks back. The service agent said I could in theory phone back the next day, still cancel and keep the points but I want to wait a couple of months to avoid getting a black mark by my name

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Andrew, I wish people would read previous threads. We have answered this most days for the last year.

The amount of offers does tend to vary, 10k for Gold MRCC was very common in January, for obvious reasons. Not so common now but could come back if the cash offers don’t return

      • Andy says:

I’d echo the try and it and see. I read @super secret stuff comment just now and decided to phone up even though I’d had 30k pints last may.

50k more points later I’m very happy! Ironically I’ve probably got better value out of my Amex platinum under Covid than before

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Anything is possible if Amex make enough money out of you

        • Harry T says:

          @Andy
Not many people have received two boluses of retention points when trying to cancel Platinum, so congrats on that! Amex must be fond of you.

    • Princess says:

Hi! My husband called to genuinely cancel his plat, (as at the moment we have 2). He had the card for 3 months. He asked to cancel and didn’t ask anything about retention. He was asked about why he wanted to cancel, then he was reminded about the £175 offer and then he was anyway offer 35000 points.

    • Mzungu says:

I just logged on to post a data point – and this was the first chat topic today!

Just called to cancel Mrs Mzungu’s Plat, expecting some retention offer, and was offered 50k MR, no strings attached 🙂
Will keep it until mid March when it will be time for her to refer me for a new BAPP, will have finished the 24 months fallow then 🙂 🙂

    • A says:

35k yesterday. I had no intention of cancelling and was fairly upfront – I just asked if there were there any retention offers on my account to encourage me to stay another year.
My fee has been monthly for over a year already so that wasn’t offered to me – I believe that is another retention thing that some people are being offered now.

  • Anna says:

@Peggerz – I had another email from IHG Ambassador re the bonus free night saying they have “documented this on a corporate level for further review” – whatever that means!
I also noticed when trying to book the free night previously that you can’t use it for the night of April 30th, even though it’s supposed to be valid until then, so wouldn’t have been any use for the bank holiday weekend. It’s a moot point now but it feels like a bit of a swizz!

    • Crafty says:

They’ve written to someone at the corporate office to ask them to have a look. You’re welcome, I’m here all week.

    • Peggerz says:

      Hi @Anna.
Thanks for this. I’ve actually made a booking with the IHG 40k voucher in late April at the IC02, before Boris’ announcement yesterday. But with hotels not to open before 17th May, I’ll have to rethink and probably cancel.
If you get an update let us know.

  • PaulC says:

Anyone any tips on credit limit increase on BAPP AMEX? Buying a car and the dealer accepts AMEX so a great opportunity to earn Avios. Is it best speaking to them on chat to find out what limit they would increase too or just take a gamble on the increase limit section?

    • Always_in_the_air says:

Definitely best to call them. They won’t allow any increase in credit limit of you’ve had the card less than 3 months or you’ve had a credit increase in the last three months. Also they do an “internal” credit check, any missed/late payments in the last 6 months prevent credit increase.

      • PaulC says:

Cheers, it’s my wife’s card and she’s had it at least 2years now although we have changed it to the fee BA card and back twice over that period to trigger the 2-4-1

    • TGLoyalty says:

Phone them. They might do a temporary increase to cover the car.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

        +1

Or they might ask for advanced payment

      • Jill (Kinkell) says:

        Amex did that for me

        • Jill (Kinkell) says:

          ….upped my credit limit temporarily

          • PaulC says:

Perfect, thanks all for your replies. Would be easier to make just one payment using my AMEX and collect the points.

          • Alex says:

Yeah she they up it even if it’s temporary, They may ask for pre-payment or to see a copy of your bank statement to show sufficient funds etc. It really shouldn’t be an issue though, they want your business. Obviously if the value is very high! Keep in mind spreading across Amex’s(if you have them) to hit multiple spend targets

    • Paul says:

Check what limit the dealer is happy to accept too. Many dealers now only accepting up to £1000 on card, blaming money laundering regs, which is not accurate but does save them having to do some small amount of homework…

      • Jay says:

As long as you show a driving licence, this will meet their KYC check. Put £30k+ on Amex for a new car and didn’t even get a call from Amex to check it was me making the payment. All went through. Just check with dealer what their floor limit is and if need be they can put through in chunks or do over a couple of days (pre pick up). Most main franchise dealers have large floor limits so shouldn’t be an issue.

  • Always_in_the_air says:

Does any one know where I can find a copy of this new “Declaration to Travel form” that is mentioned in the Most recent UK update.

I’m amazed Rob hasn’t written an article about the update yet 😉 !

  • BLT says:

Amex platinum business – I’ve got a a backing business offer of spend £1000 in one transaction get £150 back by 30/4

  • Andy says:

I’m tempted to book a flight to Portugal or Spain or Austria or somewhere like that for July but no idea if anything will be open!

It’s the hope that kills you….

    • C says:

Booked Portugal and Spain for May and August. One was a cancelled flight that I otherwise would have refunded (worst case now is a voucher), and the other is Avios 2-4-1, so I figured it was a low cost option.

  • M says:

Hello, nsandi still down for me this morning – cannot login. Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

    • Jay says:

Straight in. Clear your cookies and cache in your browser and then give it a go.

  • Roberto says:

IAG gaps up 8% again this morning.
Thank you to all who were telling me I shouldn’t have purchased last night..probably why it’s going up so much tbh.
    My purchase price was 1.02
Sold my original stake this morning at 192 so now only holding the casino’s money.

    • TripRep says:

      Played sir.

    • Paul says:

      Nice one.

If you do the opposite of what everyone else is doing then it’ll generally work out well. I bought 100k easyjet at 486 last summer when everyone was selling. Now worth over double.

It will keep rising to around 1300 i expect.

      • Roberto says:

        Nice one Paul 🙂

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Drinks on you at the HfP party 😉

For me, Norwegian air is down about 10% and Rolls Royce is hovering around break even, all of my other shares are up at least 10%. The stand out for me being Hyve Group which is up 50%. Sadly I don’t have £100k laying around like you! All bought in dips during run up to Christmas

    • Kevin D says:

      Well played Roberto!
Good luck for the next round!
