Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 22nd February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Virgin Red now have a daily Spin the Wheel – with a “chance” of winning some points. Their other competitions are not very exciting either.

  • Chris Heyes says:

BREAKING NEWS: All Boeing 777s with same engine as that of the plane which caught fire after take-off from Denver to be temporarily banned from entering UK airspace.

  • meta says:

Some Marriott Bonvoy rates are prepaid, but cancellable. I tend to avoid such properties now. Booking.com – yes, no points.

Have a look at FHR or Hotel Collection if you have Amex Plat/Gold, you will still get points on those rates.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

IHG sent me a letter saying they are increasing interest rates – so watch out if you miss a top-up when using it for the stuff people use it for!

  • Optimus Prime says:

For those whose Ambassador membership is expiring soon: https://www.ihg.com/intercontinental/content/gb/en/ambassador/ambassador-membership-extension

    • ChrisC says:

That’s been standard for a long time but it’s nice to see it being promoted

My AMB expires on 1st March. I’m going to apply for an extenion.

I think I qualify for the 6 months as I’m now in my second year – but only thanks to the 2*3 months extensions so I’ll see what they say!

      • Optimus Prime says:

Just realised mine was already extended – originally expired on 1 sept 2020, now it does on Monday. They’ve told me to f*ck off.

        • Ian C says:

I called them.. was thoroughly gracious (ie smarmy) and they gave me a second extension!

    • EwanG says:

Pretty rubbish offering. ‘Once per lifetime’ – this sounds like it has been devised from the ALL/Accor school of loyalty, and probably better to keep for a time when an extra 2 months is going to be of more benefit.

    • Craig says:

I can’t see the point of renewing until you need it now unless you want Platinum? With the loss of the 10% rebate I’ll just sign up again a few weeks before my next trip.

  • meta says:

Just got another 1000 miles gift from Aegan as did my other half. It seems everyone who signed up previously got it.

  • Always_in_the_air says:

I had a redemption flight (LHR-JNB) due to depart a couple of days ago, which I booked during the 50% avoid sale. Obviously the flight was cancelled. I asked to rebook it for October (the soonest I can go) which they said was fine, but as we went through the process the BA agent said I would have to pay the full avios price for the new flights (less of course what I had already paid) because my new dates were outside of the original sale dates!

I pointed out that it was then that cancelled the flight and that this wouldn’t apply to a cash booking made during a sale, but she wasn’t moving.

Is this correct? Should I not be able to rebook for a date of my choosing at no extra cost to myself?

    • Paul says:

Similar situation, but we were going in March. Have tried the online change option and is allowing me to book into next January as long (it seems by comparison of dates) as there is avios availability (December bit thin but other months ok). Have been right through to the confirm changes button and it hasn’t asked for more money of avios. Still waiting to confirm our house sitter, but hopeful….

      • Always_in_the_air says:

Unfortunately manage my booking, does not allow me to change the flight and it’s asking me to call BA!

    • Lady London says:

Yes. It’s bollox. HUACA. Your choice of date no cost to you. no you do not need an avios seat to be available any seat same cabin that’s for sale they should ticket you into.

  • Anna says:

    BBC news:

    ***April 12th for hairdressers***

    • meta says:

Sky News – international travel not before 17 May. Hmm.

      • Anna says:

But your hair will look great! I’ve just texted my “stylist” 🤣. Hopefully I won’t have to become a professional footballer now.

        • Lord Doncaster says:

My hair will be like David Dickinson’s by then 😂

          • Anna says:

But you won’t have the tan, unless it’s out of a bottle!

          • meta says:

My partner and I have found out we are naturally gifted, so will be saving on haircuts moving forward. I feel for the profession as many will have to shut shop for good.

          • Lord Doncaster says:

Indeed I won’t get much colour in my cheeks by having a daytrip to Cleethorpes 😂

      • Lady London says:

Depends what you do in Cleethorpe 🙂
