Did you know Lufthansa Miles & More offers a 25% miles discount for children?

The Lufthansa Miles & More scheme is certainly not perfect, but it does have some good reasons to use it. As I covered in a recent article about my trip to the Middle East over Christmas, Miles & More offers good value on this route.

One of the odder quirks of the Miles & More scheme, which can make their redemptions better value than you think, is that they offer a 25% discount on the miles required when you redeem for a child.

A child is defined as someone aged 2-11.

This only applies to flights on Adria Airways, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair and SWISS, but that is enough to be going on with.

The discount is automatically applied when searching for redemptions on the Miles & More website. Click to enlarge:

It is only applied for participating airlines. If you fly just one sector on an airline that is not listed, the discount will not be applied at all. For the booking above – London to Dubai, one way – an alternative routing with EgyptAir did not result in the 25% saving.

For a family, this makes Miles & More redemptions attractive.

Let’s take a Miles & More business class redemption from the UK to the Middle East:

British Airways wants 120,000 Avios return on a peak date, so 480,000 Avios for a family of four assuming no Amex 2-4-1 vouchers

Lufthansa or SWISS, with a change of plane in Europe, only wants 70,000 miles return – the reward chart is here (PDF) – so you are already ahead. The discount on the two child tickets means that the total required is only 245,000 Miles & More miles rather than the 280,000 you might initially expect.

Unfortunately, if this sounded attractive to you, the UK Lufthansa Miles & More payment card has just been closed to new applicants. The good news is that a replacement should appear in ‘Summer 2021’.

Adria Airways went the way of the Dodo last year so needs to be removed from the list.

    1 adult & 1 child 1 @142k, 1 @106.5k, total = 248.5k
    
    SK metal UK-Asia
    1 adult & 1 child 1@100k, 1 @50k, total = 150k
    
    SK only offer the discount on their own flights, but the reward table for SK flights is far better value than for Star Alliance redemptions. flysas.com/ie-en/eurobonus/points/fly-with-points/point-chart/
    
    Add to that the fact that SK awards 100% on P class LH/LX fares and allows family pooling and I think it’s a great program – just a shame about the limited number of long haul destinations on SK.

      To put that in context of earnings, a family of five make a round trip to SE Asia in deep discounted business (P class) and they earn enough back to take 1 adult & 1 child to SE Asia or the US on SK in the future.
      
      If you can get the availability, Star Alliance awards in First class Europe – USA are also a shade cheaper booked with SK rather than LH (175k vs 182k)

M&M have put off indefinitely the changes to the programme that they proposed to introduce this year. So that means we will be able to continue enjoying 2 years (instead of 1 in other schemes) of elite status once qualified. This is the single thing I find great about M&M and you can even qualify for up to 4 years if you time it right. I have found that useful, because M&M has been very poor with help or status extensions during Covid.

They used to have 50% off redemptions booked less than 2 weeks before flying. I used it a couple of times but not sure if they still have these. Too generous for the roaring 2020s

Er no, FlySmart was done away with last year, a very unintelligent move IMO. There’s not a lot left that’s great about the programme. European redemptions are out because they’re stupidly expensive. You can get a good deal using them in Asia or the US. I very rarely use them on LH or LX and I am no longer a fan of either airline. In fact, the state of crapness of most of the airlines has reached such a low level that I think it’s going to be difficult to truly recuperate from it.
