Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 20th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone find browsing Flyertalk almost impossible on iPhone (using Safari or Chrome)? I can seem to get past the Cookie notice

    • Aston100 says:

I get that now and again on android. Might be browser related.

      • KBuffett says:

For such a huge site, you’d think it would smoothly support Safari on iPhone!!
I really find that site too clunky and bloated.

        • kitten says:

It’s an old old and busy site and may be getting less efficient if they’re not up to date on maintenance and the occasional redesign or rebuild

I did notice though that after the site was sold to internet brands the sheer weight of advertising loaded onto it made it incredibly slow to load initially and even some pages ( to the point of sometimes timing out). I long ago pretty much gave up using it.

    • AJA says:

Do you have an account or are you just browsing? I don’t have an iPhone but on Android I find the cookie notice comes up if you try viewing without signing in. It’s much easier to read if you sign into your account.

    • Steve says:

Agreed, it’s not well optimised for mobile. On Chrome select desktop site view, then you can dis/agree with the cookie notice.

I have gotten decent amount of nectar points but I want to give myself some options and not tied to Sainsbury, Argos and Ebay. Has anyone bought any item with nectar points and got cash refund?Especially from Argos.I am looking at buying a Tv

  • Jamie says:

I am aware this subject has been touched on a bit this week but just to get a confirmed answer,

Is there a rumour that the option to extend a 241 voucher using the book then instantly get a FTV option going to disappear soon now BA are extending them?

Im trying to work out if I should hold on to the voucher expiring in March 2021 to allow quick booking online or just go ahead and attach it to a voucher but have to call up (And lose the midnight booking option) but keep the voucher for longer. If they pull the FTA option that just adds pressure to book and fly.

I am aiming to travel early next year but obviously how knows?

    • AJA says:

If you have a voucher that previously had an expiry date of 31 March 2021 it should have been extended by 6 months anyway in the last week.. Have you checked your BAEC account to see if that has happened?

As far as I am aware there is no plan for BA to stop the FTV option so it should still be there for you to book and then cancel in exchange for a FTV.

My fitbit inspire 2 from the Telegraph subscription offer arrived yesterday and sold on eBay for £61 in under an hour. I may have priced it to low but quick and done.

  • Tom says:

Transferred some Avios over to nectar and did a click and collect shop paid almost exclusively with nectar points. 5 items weren’t in the bags and didn’t notice till I was putting them away, called customer services and was told I hadn’t been charged even though the full 18500 nectar points have been debited, the extra 98p didn’t come off my card though. Seems their receipts email is also FUBARED so they can’t actually check what I was charged or what was missing 🤬

I think we all need one of theses…

Has anyone got the offer for £175 shopping credit at Waitrose etc on their Amex platinum who applied for the card this month?
Online chat said it was only for those who had their card before 6th Jan which does not seem right.
    TIA.

    • DT says:

That’s what a few were told when this offer came out and they had applied for the Plat a few days following the 6th

    • TGLoyalty says:

Not sure why that doesn’t seem right.

It’s to offer people that signed up before Jan 6th some value because they haven’t been able to use their card for any of the travel benefits during the newly announced lockdown.

Those that signed up after Jan 6th were well aware of the national lockdown and gravel restrictions before they signed up.

      • Peter K says:

Just because I looked through the original article on HfP, and a handful of comments there, and it seemed open to all. I’ve no complaints but if I could get it by ringing then I would. If I’m genuinely not eligible (as it seems I’m not) then I won’t.

Easter flights to the USA cancelled by BA. I’d used 2for1 voucher + 50% Avios offer. We are 2 adults and 2 kids so there are two separate bookings. It’s showing me the option to choose alternative dates and confirm. Since it’s two separate bookings, I don’t want to book one set and find no availability for the second booking. Are they offering flexibility when calling them? Lastly, is rebooking for August being too optimistic? I have family there so it’s not a holiday so ideally I would like to go as soon as it is allowed. I know no one can say for sure but am wondering if people are booking USA for August. Thank you.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

I’m booked for Sept. it’s a 241 open jaw as I’m planning a road trip. Seemed like a good idea a year ago.
If BA cancelled , then you can ask for a reroute. No need for Avios availability etc . If there’s space in the cabin, seats are yours!

    • Anna says:

I’m booked for August (Plan A) but the USA seems to be going in the opposite direction with regard to opening up and the tourism industry there doesn’t seem to be applying the same kind of pressure we’re seeing in the UK and Europe (probably because there are so many holiday spots in the USA that Americans are happy to take domestic vacations).
Different CSAs will tell you different things, but you’re entitled to move your bookings to a future date, and if that was then cancelled you’d still have re-routing rights.

    • memesweeper says:

We had a similar situation. Rebooked 4 Avios pax online but had the devils own job to get pax number 5 on a separate Avios booking moved to the same flight. Eventually successful. Go for it. August is risky for US. No medical reason to think they’ll lock us out but with international tourists unimportant to US they could easily keep the gates closed. I wouldn’t rebook for Aug unless I had a strong plan B in case the flight goes ahead but I cannot enter the US.

      • Joe says:

If its an avios worst case you can cancel under normal guidelines and only lose 35gbp. I would check they have 4 avios seats available as for my cancellation they said after 14 days needs avios availability
