Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 16th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Applied for IHG card last week which got pre-approved but no sign of card of further update, any approx idea how long May take ?
Also, I know is been mentioned many times over and have tried to go through previous chats but not 100% sure. Can you pay Brighton with Creation via bendy or is there a fee? Does it depend on what bendy you have? I have the basic one. Thanks and sorry to go through this again. There should be something like the Avios university articles for this!!

    • Anna says:

They’re not a fast as Amex, give it at least another week. The other thing you can do with the free card but you get charged (1.5% I think).

      • Hotelier says:

        Thanks @Anna
And with bendy metal you don’t get charged? Maybe that’s where I was getting confused from the different comments as I’ve seen some saying there’s a few and some don’t but they usually don’t specify which card.

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

If you have any issues going the Bendy route, I have found the Creationists work fine with no fees by loading the Revolutionaries and then paying the Seagulls from there… (Bendy won’t come to visit me in the Channel Islands)

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Also Beardy works fine too for paying off the Creationists direct if you want to try a triple dip 🙂

        • Hotelier says:

Quick clarifying point for no fees is Bendy Black and/or Metal? Thanks

          • Harrier25 says:

Bendy Metal only. Black will incur the 1.5% fronted fee. Go via Revolutionaries route with Creationists and save wasting £150 a year on the rip-off Bendy Metal fee!

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Creationists to revolutionaries is a cash transaction and triggers interest immediately no?

        • Aston100 says:

***Creationists to revolutionaries is a cash transaction and triggers interest immediately no?***
          That is correct.
However, if your Interconty balance is in credit, there are no fees for sending that over to Che Guevara

  • BuildBackBetter says:

JL gift cards (bought at Morrison’s) – can they be used for Waitrose grocery home delivery?

  • David says:

Just had an email cancelling and refunding my daily mail subscription (shudder) without me asking – has this happened to anyone else ?

    • Alex Sm says:

My partner got one too! I have not.
They probably started cross-checking the books…

    • Simon says:

I got the same email unfortunately, for a second I thought I had been hacked!

    • Neil says:

Me also…. though I have a number to call if it was cancelled in error. Be interesting to see if they are able to do this?

  • Blair says:

Flying Blue extending status again it seems based on email just received. Not sure if this is new news.

    • David D says:

Only announced today for those with qualification years ending between March 2021 and December 2021.

  • NickAnon says:

Where do I find my virgin companion voucher??

    • Grant says:

Log in to your Flying Club account. Click on ‘my account’ and you are looking for a line entry in the list under the Activity tab.

  • Craig says:

My IHG rollover nights just triggered.

  • Alan says:

I have a bunch of Easyjet flights coming up in April as a result of pushing trips back from last year, to Sofia, Dalaman and Porto. I doubt any of these trips will be happening, as we have no intention of going into quarantine/isolation for the sake of a short break.

Do the wise owls on here think I should be pushing them back again now, or is it better to wait for them to be cancelled.

    • Hotelier says:

I would personally wait for them to be cancelled and take the cash then rebook when int’l travel comes back, those routes are fairly cheap, specially low cost, to have to hold on to them.
Or if you really have an idea when you want to travel get Easyjet to rebook you to your preferred dates on some of them, think if you would be able to travel all those flights in a short period of time.

  • Benilyn says:

Creative – anyone had “Your account has restricted functionality. Please call one of our service representatives…”

    • Harrier25 says:

That’s a new one. What have you been up to?

      • Chrisasaurus says:

        Bendy
        Revolutionary
        Seagul
        Ernie
        Beardy

        Pick any of the above!

        • Alex says:

The same happened to me. Called them, they asked a question “so are you using it for cash?” which I have not answered, they unblocked it but anyway I could and still can spend only £700 per week for all MCC 6012 transactions which I understand their system recognises as cash.

    • avstar says:

equivalent of KYC for creation. if you’ve been paying it off with a credit card, might be game over for you
