The HfP chat thread – Monday 15th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hyatt Globalist:

I’d booked a 7-night Mattress run at the Hyatt Place in Haynes to get to Globalist for the last week of February, but it was looking more and more unlikely that I’d be able drive up there due to the COVID restrictions.

Fortunately, I have a relative in Dubai who had to stay 25 nights in a hotel from mid-January. He already has Marriott Ambassador Elite, but was open to doing the 15-night at a cheap Hyatt to get himself Globalist when I told him about the offer. He also offered to get me the 7 nights I required, so I booked the Hyatt Place Jumeirah for 7 nights, and added him as a second guest. The nights credited this morning, and the bonus nights should hopefully clear in the next couple of weeks.

I’m aware that a fair few people were looking at the Hyatt Haynes as a mattress run, so this may be an option if you know someone who can check in to a cheap Hyatt hotel in a city where there aren’t any restrictions.

Rob, for the last three days I constantly get a captcha verification request to enter the site and even to move from one comment page to another. So annoying. Same on work PC and Android mobile. What has happened?

    • mr_jetlag says:

Happened to me on another site when you fail a captcha it keeps serving them up. If you’re using Chrome or another browser with a login you need to clear the HFP site data completely.

    • Rob says:

Due to increasing attempts to attack the site, we have added Captchas to visitors from Russia, China and Lithuania. You are in the latter category. Sorry about that, you need to blame some of your fellow countrymen 🙂

      • TGLoyalty says:

What exactly are they trying to find not like you Store tonnes of passwords they can then use to login elsewhere.

Bot picked the wrong site or perhaps ransom payments… though imagine you have everything backed up and only likely to lose some comments.

        • Rob says:

That’s not how it works. The most common one is to add a bit of code which directs every page to some dodgy gaming or adult site. Since we get many thousands of clicks from Google each day, all of those would immediately redirect.

  • Martha says:

Can you refer from a personal amex to a business amex?

  • Harj says:

Anyone with HSBC Premier – does the ‘other’ product for eligibility need to be open before application? Also – does the full salary need to be paid into the account if using it, don’t want to use as my main account!

    Thanks

    • BuildBackBetter says:

      1) You can open it after taking up premier.
      2) Yes. You can set up a standing order (or is it a dd?) to move it to another bank if you like. I just transfer out what I need manually whenever I want. Some people have tried to change the salary credit to another bank later on, but not sure how successful they are.

  • DJ says:

I remember someone mentioned that renewing IHG AMB will also renew the Spire Elite status – is it still a thing? Thanks

    • Matt says:

AMB gives you IHG platinum, not spire.

      • Genghis says:

Perhaps you weren’t aware of the “trick”? To answer OP, I don’t know.

      • ChrisC says:

Yes it does but that’s not the question.

From what people have posted on here and flyer talk it is apparent that if you renew AMB and if you have Spire then spire will also renew.

        • ChrisC says:

But it’s not a listed benefit of AMB

        • MilesOnPoint says:

Does this also apply if you get AMB membership for the first time (and currently hold Spire, due to expire 31st Dec)?

  • tonyb says:

I have some flights to Miami in August using 2-4-1s but we would like to change them to NYK at xmas can I do it over the phone? It seems to be impossible to get through or can I take the voucher and do it online. I don’t want to miss the flights if they take a week or will I get the voucher quicker than that. Many thanks

    • ChrisC says:

Your’re going to have to phone them up to use the voucher in any case. So do it all in one call.

Only cash only vouchers can be used on line.

Current account switching offer just dropped on Virgin Red for Virgin Money.
