British Airways has extended the expiry date on some British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion vouchers.

All vouchers due to expire before 31st December 2021 have been extended by six months.

As well as BA Amex vouchers, this extension also applies to:

  • Gold Upgrade Vouchers
  • Chase Travel Together Tickets
  • RBC Companion Award Vouchers
  • Asba Companion Vouchers
  • RSB American Express Companion Vouchers
  • RSB World Mastercard Companion Vouchers
British Airways 241 companion voucher extended by six months

This is the third extension that has been announced, following similar extensions in March 2020 and October 2020, to account for the impact of the pandemic.

In addition, British Airways is adding an additional 6-months validity to all new Companion Voucher or Travel Together tickets earned between June 2020 and the end of December 2021.

This is what my wife’s account used to show (I used this screenshot in an article two weeks ago):

This is what it shows now:

Both have been extended by six months.

For clarity, the extension is also applied to vouchers which have been used but where the flight has not been taken. If you cancel a flight which has already been booked using a 241 voucher, it will come back into your account with the six month extension applied.

  • Dave says:

My voucher was issued 4 July 2019 so has only been extended to 4 Jan 2022 a while back. Seems I may need to use it this year or pseudo extend it to 30 April 2023 then ?

    • Hamilton says:

I have the same situation, expiry 4 Jan 2022 so seemingly no extension. A bit unfair as it would have been extended if 5 days earlier.

  • rk says:

Does this mean that OB points will also be extended to the end of the year instead of 30th June 2021?

  • Freddy says:

Shame you can’t exchange a 241 voucher for 10k avios or something. I’ll be swimming in these 241’s!

  • qrfan says:

My wife and I both have GUF2 vouchers expiring in Dec 2021 and neither have been extended as yet. Both expire prior to Dec 31st 2021. Am I reading the article incorrectly or should we have had them extended?

    • Alison says:

I have a Guf2 which had an expiry date of September 2021, as of today it’s now showing March 2022

      • qrfan says:

Ok, thanks. Will give it a few days and then get in touch with them. Doubt either will get used by Dec 31st at this rate.

        • Cheshire Pete says:

As a general rule, even before COVID, they will extend GUFs by 12 months on request. I had one in a booking from last September which also was due to expire Sep 20. They cancelled by booking with Cash, but the GUF got stuck. It needed manually refunding and also manually extending by the then 6 month rule. When it finally got done it got refunded to expire Sep ‘21. It now gone to March ‘22 when I just checked.

    • Rob says:

On my reading it should be extended, yes.

  • Sam says:

Hi Rob, is this showing straight away on the BAEC account? My voucher was issued in July 2020 and is still showing as expiring in Jan 2023 (it was 2 and a half years at the time when first issued..).

    Thanks

    • Rhys says:

Knowing BA’s IT it might take a few weeks.

      • Rob says:

Only vouchers expiring in 2021 are extended.

        • Sam says:

Have I misread the below in the article…it says June 2020?

In addition, British Airways is adding an additional 6-months validity to all new Companion Voucher or Travel Together tickets earned between June 2020 and the end of December 2021.

          • Andy says:

I have same issues and that exactly how I read this article, last voucher earned November 2020 but no extension on it

        • Geoff says:

I seem to have had a 241 due to expire in Jan 22 extended to Jul 22.

    • A13 says:

Doesn’t qualify for extension as isn’t expiring in 2021.

  • krys_k says:

    Will status be extended ?

  • Yorkieflyer says:

So is it still the case that new 241’s issued by 31March 21 will have a 30 month life?

  • Grimz says:

I have a 241 issued on 7th Nov 2018 but still shows expiry 7th Nov 2021. I have it booked into a flight for Phoenix in September but it should have been extended even as a used voucher? Can’t see September being okay to travel so I need to get that extension!

    • Morgan says:

You can amend your flight in MMB – the extended voucher expiry date is recognised. I’ve just been able to push back some flights I had booked with the voucher.
