The HfP chat thread – Sunday 14th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I put a question on a daily chat last week sometime, and have just spent 45 minutes looking for it just to see if anyone put an answer – but could not find it.
Is there a quick way to search all the chat pages at the same time for comments I have made, or get notified if anyone replied to a comment?

    • ChrisC says:

No idea about search but there is definitely no notification of a reply to a post.

      Just post your question again.

    • Tracey says:

Use the search button at the top. Then use the drop down to choose ‘ comments only’. You need to be able to remember a relatively unusual work from your post.

      • Rob says:

Doesn’t work any longer – we had to remove the indexing of comments because it was wrecking the site. Each search was triggering a trawl of 500,000+ comments and it was killing our site speed.

    • jj says:

Just use google and add ‘site:hfp2022.headforpoints.blog’ to your search.

Due to the way the site is structured, you can restrict to a year, month or even a specitic thread by simply extending the site name. For example, to search in 2020’s threads, just add, ‘hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020’ to your Google search.

That’s how I do it, anyway.

Sainsburys seem to be offering good Nectar offers on their whole range of credit cards – not just the Nectar specific one which you have had to have been a Nectar member for 6 months – the offer on their normal cards is 7,500 rather than 10,000 for the Nectar one with slightly different spend requirements but no 6 month wait.

Collect up to 7,500 Nectar points
    1. This offer is only available when you take out a new credit card.
    2. You’ll get 750 bonus Nectar points when you use your card to buy £35 or more of Sainsbury’s shopping, up to 10 times during the 2 months after we open your account.
    3. We’ll add the points to your Nectar account within 60 days of the end of the offer period.
    4. You need to tell us your Nectar card number when you apply.

Just booked CW to JFK and Manage My Booking is showing fees for seats despite having my Gold BAEC number attached to the booking. Only difference between this and another booking I have is that I included a hotel. I don’t recall seeing this with BA Holidays bookings before. Any tips or is it a call to BAEC to fix?

    • ChrisC says:

I’d double check that your number is in the booking rather than just the booking being in your MMB in the app / website.

Other than that I’d try refreshing the app and that usually fixes any issues.

  • Chris H says:

How do you dispose of your old Platinum metal card. I can’t burn it, can’t cut it, and do not feel comfortable putting the whole card in the bin.

    • Charlieface says:

I think they will take it back to dispose it

    • TGLoyalty says:

You ask amex for an envelope to return it. Or keep it as a future ice scraper.

    • Alex D says:

Our shredder has a CD slot and I tried that and it worked😂 I have also used tin snips before, but yeah Amex will let you free-post it back to them and they’ll destroy it

    • Rob says:

Amex will send you an envelope to return it for recycing.

  • Bee says:

I have an amex rewards card. Do I have to cancel it and wait 2 years to get a bonus on the Amex gold rewards or the the BA Amex?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Gold yes, BA Free yes

BAPP no it’s 2 years since your last BA earning card.

  • Keely says:

Morning all looking at the Sainsbury’s credit card -10000 points for £400 spend in 2 months . I think I’d struggle to spend that in Sainsbury’s- any ideas to bump this spend up please? Im presuming they sell gift cards (I rarely go to Sainsbury’s!) …can’t see that this specifically excluded..? Thanks

    • mark2 says:

Thanks for asking that; I had assumed that it was just spend £400!

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Order items like wine, razor blades – anything with a long shelf life?

    • mark2 says:

I don’t think anyone can answer that question, as the 10,000 Nectar will not be awarded until long after the two months ends.

      • BJ says:

In the past I know for sure spend on amazon and Sainsbury’s own giftcards worked.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Blimey wish I was you! £400 is about 3 weeks grocery shopping!

Stock up on long life stuff? Booze?

      • Keely says:

It’s about 4 weeks for me – but doing my shop in Sainsbury’s will put me out a bit and I’m a tad lazy ! Plus I do like Aldi’s the best….

  • Jason says:

Data point..Update on virgin credit card limit. I called virgin and asked for an increase last Thursday, the computer offered an increase from 20 to 25k. It was however sent to the back office to be actioned, I was a little concerned given the amount of curve spend. However the limit was actioned today!

    • John says:

      Better than me.
Started on £25000 years ago. Always pay in full each month.
Tried to get increase no of times.
      Always says no.
Anyone have a limit if more than £25000?

    • Harry T says:

I was given about 2.5k after an initial limit of 1.5k. Would love to know how they decide this.

      • Sandgrounder says:

I was given 18k on the paid card, applied for and was given the free with 6.2k, then cancelled the paid card a couple of months later. I haven’t asked for more.

  • Andrew says:

We really are never going to be able to NZ ever again it seems. They have zero appetite to any Covid risk – 3 cases in Auckland and the whole city back into lockdown.

    • Anna says:

But it would be foolish to risk an outbreak because of 3 cases, surely? Other countries (including the UK) didn’t do anything much when the first cases were found, and look where we are now, horrific numbers of deaths AND no freedom for months on end. Ultimately New Zealanders, and the citizens of places which have followed a similar route through the pandemic, are going to have to decide whether they prefer the risk of having Covid in the general population to being cut off from the rest of the world.

      • Andrew says:

Well it looks like NZ are taking the latter option, at least for the next few years. It’s a balancing act, but the exit strategy from any sort of restrictions is hard to find.

        • Mr. AC says:

Exit strategy would be – whole population vaccinated, research shows vaccine protective, treatments for early onset of symptoms to prevent deterioration are found. Multiple RCTs happening for the last one.
Question is – when. Maybe I’m too optimistic, but I think they’ll open before mid 2022.

    • ChrisC says:

Lockdown is for 3 days not forever.

      • TGLoyalty says:

For now. Depends how many cases they find.

Aus seems to go into 5 day lockdowns every few weeks.

I’d love to know their exit strategy.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

There’s no perfect path and nobody knows as we haven’t been here before. The exit strategy is surely to wait until your population is vaccinated, then ease restrictions gradually (vaccinated visitors from low risk countries at the start) and see how it goes at each step before easing further, particularly having got this far?
When they look at the endless lockdown repeats of the UK, with huge disruption the rest of the time too, the odd chill-at-home week here or there in order to live a normal life the rest of the time must look pretty attractive…

      • TGLoyalty says:

It’s not normal in Aus they still have social distancing, mask wearing, limits on gatherings etc.

        • BLT says:

From reports the population of NZ and Australia are very happy with their situation. I don’t think you find any of them wishing they chose the UKs path for the past year.

          • Andrew says:

And yet they will not be able to go on international holidays for a long time – not ideal either.

          • Richard says:

I read slightly different on some of the tripadvisor forums. Some of the Australians were extremely unhappy at been locked in and one said to a uk resident “at least your country doesn’t make its citizens endure draconian measures that we have been forced into”.

As been mentioned, there is no ideal answer

          • TGLoyalty says:

From the reports you see where?

There are many sides to it.

Including those not allowed to leave and those not allowed to go back home because they don’t have the £££

          • QFFlyer says:

Wouldn’t say we’re happy with it…yes the situation here could be a lot worse, but the constant internal border politics, lockdowns after a single sneeze and inability to travel anywhere sucks majorly.

    • The Lord says:

Just shows how hard their exit strategy is going to be. Will they tolerate any cases? Any deaths? Will they allow their citizens back home without charging them or forcing them to book at least 3 months in advance? Time for them to be honest with their citizens and give an idea of what the plan is

    • Lady London says:

They do not have the resources for an outbreak if it spreads. They are only being sensible and good luck to them.
